legal mining has also destroyed the forest cover and livelihoods.
Below is the mineral production in 1967:
Gold (from Ashanti and Western Regions) --- 724,134 oz
Diamond (from the Akyem in the Eastern Region) --- 2,633,527 ct
Bauxite (from the Western Region) --- 333,458 mt
Manganese (from the Western Region) --- 596,572 mt
(Source mining policy of Ghana)
Value today:
Gold --- $1400 per oz
Diamond --- from $1500 to $150,000 per carat (depending on the quality)
Bauxite --- $150 per mt
Manganese --- $450 per tonne
Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years. A visit to the Akyem districts would indicate the poor state of districts: bad roads, poor infrastructure. The state of the districts is not reflective of the revenue they have contributed over the last 100 years.
People do not know that Akyems and Ashantis are two different groups of people and existed as two different states about 150 years ago.
With oil drilling going on what quality assurance tests have been conducted to find out whether marine fishes from our coast are safe to eat or not???????

The Akyems are lazy. Only waiting for government hand-outs. I could remember, when their public toilet was broken, a sub chief in Koforidua was waiting for the government to come and fix it. What a shame!!!

You have been reduced to females with male organs. Why are you not enforcing the laws against illegal mining, and just complaining? The complaints will not solve the problem.
