The hen and hawk Twi proverb that was grossly mis-applied by the President to mis-characterize the people of the entire region of Ashanti is not just unfortunate but very unpresidential. As soon as elections are over and the President-elect takes the oath of office, he becomes president of an entire nation , not the president of a cabal, ethnic group or a political party . His public statements and utterances must always seek to find ways to promote and sustain national unity and development . Any attempt by any sitting president to slight one or more ethnic groups or set some ethnic groups on a collision course is like setting the stage for national disintegration. That's against the oath and covenant of the constitution and of the presidency and it should be considered an impeachable offence. The presidency is the highest office in the land and any attempt by any individual or group to ridicule, minimize or bring the office into disrepute must be fiercely resisted by all if we're to maintain our national cohesion and nationhood.
No matter how it's sliced and diced the latest nationally publicized bashing of the Asante nation and tribe by President Mahama is much more serious than the "All die be die" statement made by Nana Akuffo Addo in the run-up to election 2012. The difference is that one is a sitting president while the other was a presidential candidate. If the "all die be die" statement caused Nana the presidency why shouldn't the president's recent statement cost him his job too? Isn't it true that where much is given much is required? In 2012, candidate John Mahama while campaigning for election in the North solicited for the northern votes not on the strength of his competency and qualifications but simply because he felt it was time for a northerner, weak or strong, qualified or unqualified to be president as if the office of president is regionally or ethnically rotated. Mahama, unlike Akuffo Addo, was not made to pay any price for making remarks that had the potential of bringing the nation to the brink of annihilation and went on to become president. Should he be 2 times lucky? No! ! !.
