I was also of the view that SDMA would taken the whole region in perspective and talk about how the entire region has been left unattended to with their developmental needs. Western region is the bread basket of Ghana yet the least developed with reference to its contribution to the national development.

I was posted to Sefwi Wiawso Dist. in 1991 and left in 1997 so I know what am talking about. Was it not the NDC that built the current hospital in Wiawso? Mr. Boateng, I support total break up of the country so that each tribe can have its own country to either live in poverty or live in prosperity.

That way, no "tribe" from elsewhere can insult others with impunity.

U can't use the resources from Sefwi as the cement ground to push to the government for development. Perhaps it produces coffee, cocoa etc to strengthen our export but other places of Ghana equal produce resources for all of us benefit. I think the Volta river where we get our electricity for the whole country doesn't lie in Sefwi. It lies in a different part of Ghana, where the people are equally suffering from lack of social amenities just as your place Sefwi. But such people are not asking for a sect of regional creation for development. Hohoe in the Volta Region where Mount Afajato (the tallest mountain ) is located, attracts more tourists which is equal deprived of social amenities just like your Sefwi is not asking for another creation of region in order to meet their development. Even Kumasi that u cited of many developmental infrastructure taking place from KATH to schools in which many people from sefwi travel to for help, it (Kumasi) is also crying for many of these social amenities because it is not every suburb in kumasi that can boast of them. Some people in suburbs of kumasi equally travel to other places for jobs and health cares but they are not asking for different creation of regions for themselves.

The only thing u people can do is to send your grievances to the right body but you must bear in mind every part of the country is equally crying for these social amenities. Never think about creation of another region, that would be mirage.

It is such gross neglect of most resourceful areas of the Country that has radicalized some Citizens from Ashanti, Western and Eastern Region to resort to ethnocentric animosity for other Citizens who hail from the less endowed areas. " Why use our resources to develop other areas while we are neglected?" The rightly embittered Citizens ask. It is all the fault of our Politicians who have been foolishly nepotic and excessively corrupt.

If we would remember, the main reason for the birth of the UP (Mate me ho) Party was the fear that the resources of Ashanti would be disproportionately distributed around the Nation at the expense of Ashantis who by the time of our Independence owned most of our known highly commercialized Natural Resources.

The UP folks therefore proposed Federalism as the political structure of our Country so that each area or Region might have greater control over its resources. The opponents of that proposal, led by the CPP, rejected it because they also feared the least endowed areas would be left perpetually poor and undeveloped.

It is in view of the concerns of the Feferalists that the Nkrumah Regime initiated a wide distribution of infrastructure including the location of Secondary Schools and Factories, all around the Regions. Even with that initiative by the first native secular Administration, many areas felt victimized by unnecessary Partisan-driven exclusion.

Our subsequent Gov't continued that subtle political retribution and neglected areas needing basic infrastructure. In fact, we came to experience selective discontinuation of projects by incumbent Regimes because those Projects were either begun I by an opposing Party's Administration or located in the strongholds of their opponents.

Then erupted blatant pervasive corruption by which our representatives in Government, like MPs, managed to access funds designated for Projects in their areas and selfishly squandered the money.

For a solution, therefore, the Parliament MUST allocate a certain special compensatory Fund for developing areas where Natural Resources exist and harnessed in addition to the nominal Royalties paid to the areas. Such Funds would be disbursed by consensus of the local District Assemblies.

We all know that the long-existing Royalties hardly benefit the real owners of the Land from which the Resources are extracted. Mostly, the Paramount Chiefs take the bulk, if not all, of the Royalties for their parochial personal interests. Such monies could have gone into various self-help projects like fixing broken Public School Builfings and Toilets, etc., while remedial funding from the central or local Governments are delayed.

If such Special Funding had existed for these exceptionally heavily harnessed areas, Oboase, for instance would not suffer as much degradation as they have. At least, the pollution choking the Oboase area could have been mitigated. Right now that the Ashanti Gold has been coyly handed over to the former Colomial Power under the guise of International Capitalist investment. And as it lis fast depleting in its resource, there are signs of growing unemployment and poverty in the Oboase area. We can notice similar horrible neglect in the Oda, Akwatia areas in the Akyem subregion.

We should, in view of the above, experience move quickly to attend to the needs of these most resourceful areas--Sefwiman, Oda, etc. The answer to this problem in the Sefwiman area must not be secession from the Western Region but rather better leadership in the Gov't and representation for the area to provide deserving infrastructure to the People there.

The other parts of the Western Region have not been equitably developed either. So, it is imperative that we all pressure the Gov't to use our revenues wisely and equitably. The MP of the area must be summoned before the Traditional leaders and the Constituents to account to the People and explain why the area cannot immediately be served as the People expect.

First, a correction. The Upper West and Upper East Regions were not created by Dr. Hilla Limann who is from the area but by Jerry Rawlings!

Second, the creation of a new region, Western North Region, will not solve ALL the problems in that area overnight. Today, people are moving from bigger and more developed towns (some of which are regional capitals) to cities like Kumasi and Accra in search of jobs.

Third, the regions do not have their own developmental budgets. The money comes from the central government in Accra. So they could get the region created but the money may still not come to them "waa waa" as they expect.

In conclusion, I think that we Ghanaians should be thinking of how to get the ruling governments to share the national cake fairly. We can partition Ghana into 1000 or even one million regions but if the national cake is not shared equally and fairly, we will be having more of such agitations!

The area needs help. For many years it was the bastion of the cocoa industry taking the batton from Ashanti and Brong Ahafo and yet very few roads existed at the time. We used to walk ten miles to nearest town of Manso Amenfi to buy kerosine and other necessities. I hope the Wassa area see some development.
