Ghanaian attitude toward waste management is similar to Ghanaian attitude toward politic. People are apathetic and its all about what they will get now without any future consideration. In similar manner square pegs with money can buy their way into political office only to steal and the Ghanaian apathetically sit down feel the pain of mismanagement and claim God will help them. The day Ghanaians will be mindful to maintain good public sanitation, Thieves in political office will see their end.

How can a capital city, the area for business, be engulf with that much filth & no one notice it until now? Go to Rwanda & see their capital city Kigali, the place is probably the cleanest place in africa. The government there has made it a mandatory for its citizens to do a massive clean up once a month & their president sometimes participate. Nobody seem to care for the environment or their surroundings in Omo Ghana

I don't think this government need China's 3 billion dollars loan. They must as well sell us to China then would not have to worry about managing this banana republic. The government cannot even collect refuse(BORLA) from the streets?

Well, you can't blame Ghanaians entirely the poor sanitation in the country. Most homes don't have access to toilets and the government need to make it a law for landlords to provide such amnesties.

People refuse to separate kitchen/garden waste which could be composted for horticulture, from paper, plastics, glass and metals.

We don't have new visions on how we want to efficiently and effectively run our growing cities.

Accra, for example, should be zoned into commercial and residential sections.
All the garbage from the commercial zone should be separated from that of the residential zone, and called municipal waste. The refuse from the municipal waste should be managed differently from the waste from the residential trash. More of the municipal waste should go into specially built landfills and incinerators.

The refuse from the residential zone should first be sorted into recyclables, and biodegradables.
Then they are sent to landfills and incinerators.
The biodegradables find their way into specially designed compost stations.

Schools, churches, mosques, hospitals and markets must all participate in this waste collection exercise.

Finally, we must find a way to handle our Ewaste and medical waste.

I agree 100% with Apaak's statement because I personally have held the same opinion of Ghanaians concerning waste management for many years. And I personally do the following to reduce waste 1. I personally do not accept any polythene bags for purchases I make anywhere, whether at THE GAME or at a kiosk- I always receive a look of surprise at any shop in The Game or elsewhere when I pull out some old ones I bring along in my bag or pocket from home. Thus, I always recycle the numerous ones my wife may and invariably does accept- I am really trying hard to indoctrinate her not to accept any more!!. 2. I double any polythene bag before putting any contents in them, this makes them more durable and thus they last even months in my office-bag being reused quite a number of times when their counterparts) bought at the same time would be long damaged and flying around or thrown away. I even prefer to use cloth bags which can be washes and reused and I have two of such in my office-bag always. 3. I do not and never drink pure water from sachets in public to avoid throwing them on the ground and littering like the typical Ghanaian would do-in public I buy water in Plastic bottles and only in the office do I use sachets, which the refuse collector hopefully disposes of properly. In fact, I NEVER buy things in traffic for this same and more reasons. 4. When I make purchases, e.g toothpaste in paper cover packaging, I remove the packaging and leave them with the vendors-I do not take useless extra rubbish with me home. 5. I separate all my refuse at home in two waste bins in the kitchen, regularly throw away the organic stuff into the bushes behind my house and regularly burn the combustible ones (toilet papers, the few plastics and papers) every two weeks or so behind my house. As for the glasses and tins, I take them miles away once a month to my mum's and add them to her refuse for regular collection by the waste collectors contracted for that instead of patronizing the illegal waste pit (now a heap) on a small piece land that had been quarried by hand for stones: in fact I walk by that heap with the tin and bottle rubbish in my hand and NEVER ONCE have I thrown it or anything else in there!!! Ghanaians are simply not disciplined and principled in all matters, not only concerning waste and refuse!! We should reintroduce the net-bags we once used for shopping and use highly durable brown paper bags in supermarkets and put a punitive charge on all plastic bags or ban them outright as some countries have done. Moreover, the key is avoiding the production of waste and separating waste!!! Is any Ghanaian listening, Halloo wifee?

We talk of power outages due to electricity rationing all over the place but none of our so-called learned experts with degrees upon degrees after their names is coming up with the idea of waste management by means of power generation using garbage as as secondary fuel to generate steam in boilers to drive steam turbines to generate power to supplement our anaemic power supply system in the country.

This technology has been proved to be environmentally safe in conjuction with ESP's( Electrostatic precipitators) which will save a lot of landfills from being overwhelmed because all that will need to be sent to the landfills will be the reduced volume of ash from the ESP's.

It's given that a source of fuel(natural gas, bunker "C", jet fuel, diesel fuel) will be needed for the initial firing of the boilers and once the boilers are up to temperature the supplementary fuel can be added through a conveyor belt system to the boiler solid fuel bed.

This system is very popular in some of the cities in North America.

Ghana can have about 6 of these units strategically placed across the country especially in areas where garbage is generated in large volumes.

Can our energy sector please look into this and see how feasible this can be in our country?

"Killing two birds with one stone" kinda idea because it will help with both our power generation and garbage control issues.

Where are the so-called experts? Speak up please.
