Why has the government not invested into solar energy to solve this energy crisis beats me. All could be solved with 3 years of planning;training young University and Technical Institution graduates-empowering them with financing to acquire the necessary tools and facilities. This is possible if the government has foresight, vision and the brains.
If the government is supportive, there are Ghanaian entrepreneurs who will be interested to invest into such a venture.
I visited home last 3 years on this mission. Sorry to say that, the system have road blocks in terms of financing. Bank loans in Ghana is attainable only if I was willing to give 10% to officials for their signature. In addition, certain bank officials wanted $7,000.00 from me as an introduction fee. I asked where that money should go, I was told that was to grease some palms. All in all, interest rates was at 23%. I barked out and left Ghana.
The system is all about greasing officials palms.

Ghana is not spending the money on soccer. It is spending it on dumsor which is already the government's responsibility to fix.

I can understand the strategic need to prevent disturbance from a dissatisfied football loving public but is the impact of "dumso" on productivity and GDP growth not a more serious consideration? Short term, JCR type /infantile politics is killing our nation and it is really sad. Please resolve the energy crises for industrial performance and productivity and NOT footballing or TV watching purposes.

Spending $30 million for crude oil import has nothing to do with the World Cup and the Black stars. If Mahama's regime is serious, he will encourage more productivity and not diverting attention from much needed work productivity and not watching football at all cost in the offices. Under Atta Mills , he ensured that soccer matches were not watched at the offices and during work schedules. That is a mark of departure from this leader who leads from behind his tail. Soah!! $30 extra million on world cup indeed. This is a clear case of incompetence on steroids. Oman Ghana fire NDC come 2016 and lets build bigger prisons for those who be would found for financial malfeasance. Judgement day and not judgement debt is coming big time.
