This judgment is very bad. The Boy should get an attorney to appeal immediately. The police evident did not mentioned a paternity test. It could be the girl was impregnated by some other person.

Does the judge consider she is ruining the lives of the boy, girl and their baby by jailing him for 7 years. The boy had committed an offence by impregnating a minor, but she could have given a 'reflective' sentence to the boy who could continue his education. This sentence has definitely ended his livelihood or a better responsible future, another armed robber may be born when he is out of prison if God does not help us. I am afraid this impregnated girl has come to the end of a responsible future livelihood because she fell pregnant at school that is it, in Ghana. There is no scheme that enables girls who fall out of school pregnant going back because in Ghana, it is a STIGMA. Oh Ghana, da ben?

The are reports that the microphones in the appeals court in Accra are not working. The Judiciary must rectify this immediately.

The number of court houses and judges in Ghana are inadequate. The population has ballooned and changes have to be made. The same can be said of the number of police officers and the number of penitentiaries. On a visit to a number of court houses around the country I found the Ghana flag and the Ghana Coat of Arms (Seal) absent. This must change.

Good policing is needed in order for companies to operate effectively. How many detectives has the Ghana police service got and to what extent do they pursue cases? Too many people are being robbed of their toil and sweat. It is important that we increas the police-population ratio.

In many areas especially in the at least 12 Akyem districts which make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region the police is out of reach but the chiefs have been doing their best in ensuring that law and order prevail in these areas. The judiciary must provide these districts with an Appeals court and high courts. The law firms located there must have some work to do.

Looking at salary levels or the per capita income it is apparent that a sizable proportion of the population cannot afford good legal services. The government must therefore provide some subsidies in this regard lest our republic turn into an oligarchy.

Judges deserve good salaries but what would a judge consider virtuous?? Judges must bear in mind that their salaries cannot be more than the productivity of the general public. They must take the GNI per capita of Ghana into account.

How can judges help increase the GDP of Ghana? Judges must be at work by 8am and leave not before 5pm.

There are somethings in the story which makes uncomfortable reading, such as the boy being jailed for 7 seven years only on the assertions of the girl. What if the girl has had sex with someone else, immediately before or after this boy? What if they girl is lying about the true father of the baby? Is there a conclusive evidence that the baby to be born belongs to this boy by way of a DNA. All these facts have not been established beyond reasonable doubt. Therefore, one can conclude that the judges decision was knee-jerked.
Assumimg that all the above posed questions were in favour of the girl, then the only crime here is having consensual sex with a minor. Therefore, in deciding the punishment the judge will need to take into consideratio the role of the victim, her age, the age of the accused and any underlinning issues, as well as, the welfare of the unborn child.
I am not au fait with Ghana sentencing policy, but it appears to me that the punishment for this unfortunate situation is too harsh, and one which might have a long term detrimental effect on all concerned.

Sentence is just ridiculous but thats what appeal courts are for.

Now that the boy is in prison will society take care this girl his unborn child whose father is spending a wasteful 7years of his youthful years behind bars. Did the judge think about the unborn child growing to know his father was sentenced for his procreation. Did she think about the psychological trauma this boy will go throughout his lifetime? What this judge did is no different from that of what the stupid high court justice Atuguba did to the NPP. The judges themselves are corrupt. How could such a sentence be given over a consensual sex? Even as the 14 year old is minor, she willingly agreed to having sex with the 19 year old boy and so in your rightful state of mind, who is it to blame? The girl herself should rather be jailed because she willingly agreed to sleep with the boy. If this makes no sense then I can tell you that even a five year old girl can prevent any man from having sex with her unless, as they say, an excessive force is applied. When that is done, then you can accuse the boy with rape of forceful confinement or something. But if no such force is applied, then I think the girl had earlier on planned to have sex at every opportune time, and this time, it turned out to be this 19year old boy. In fact, I do not agree with what transpired betwixt the two, it is rather ridiculous for any Atuguba-like judgment to come to the fore in around Ghana's judicial system. Shame on all these corrupt judges.
