  I have seen several pictures from different parts of the country where such illegal mining activities go on daily and they are very disturbing. Not only will such activities adversely affect cocoa production, they are also going to destroy farm lands which will eventually food production in the nation. In this scenario, it is the rural population that will face potential food shortages. I don't have any hard evidence but if what I'm hearing is true that the perpetrators are foreigners then the government and the traditional leaders must work in tandem to find ways to stop those activities. They owe that to the people of Ghana of present and posterity. I cannot see myself or any Ghanaian for that matter, packing up with a semiautomatic weapon in my luggage, heading to BEIJING, settle and start turning over their land looking for whatever precious metal there is, and the government and other leaders looking the other way. We will forgive our leaders if they have no clue how to deal with the economy; it seems ECONOMICS and proper governance are foreign to the current administration, we will not forgive them if they allow this wanton destruction of our land to go. MAN UP MAHAMA

  Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
  
  Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years. A visit to the Akyem districts would indicate the poor state of districts: bad roads, poor infrastructure. The state of the districts is not reflective of the revenue they have contributed over the last 100 years.
