  Manganese (from the Western Region) --- 596,572 mt

  Value today:
  Gold --- $1400 per oz
  Diamond --- from $1500 to $150,000 per carat (Market price)
  Bauxite --- $150 per mt
  Manganese --- $450 per tonne
  
  Akyem districts make up more than half of the population of the Eastern Region.
  
  Even though today diamond production from Akyem has stopped temporarily Akyem districts must be given their fair share of projects. Discrimination against Akyems districts has been going on for at least the last forty years. A visit to the Akyem districts would indicate the poor state of districts: bad roads, poor infrastructure. The state of the districts is not reflective of the revenue they have contributed over the last 100 years.

We have Gold, yet we are poor, we have oil now, yet petrol shortage, we have Akosombo, yet power outages. Our leaders have no sense of accountability for the people. The Akan national pledge ( yen ara ye asaase ni) means nothing to the school children who sing those songs because they see white miners and corrupt leaders in our dear country.

  A new (large scale) mine cannot be built in Ghana without a lengthy, comprehensive EISA plus a public forum. And, the mine operaqtes to EPA laws and is always monitored and held accountable.

  Small scale and galamsey mining, however, is not regulated - they are the real problem, not the large foreign miners.

Many more attempts are underway to deprive hundreds of rural dwellers at Yawhima, Johnsonkrom, Mensakrom, Donkokrom and Tanom within the Chiraa- Sunyani/Abesim-Rivers Tano enclave. Some Chinese and local experts have been there to deceive the villagers a dam is going to be built for them. If surface mining takes off there it Will bring untold hardships to the inhabitants and all people living in the Sunyani municipality who use pipe borne water. A stitch in time saves nine.
