I think the traditional rulers can invite the minister for Chieftiancy affairs to such durbers instead of the President. It is time for us to change from this one-man-presidency and adopt the system of a PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL which will stear the Work of a Prime Minister and the Parliamentarians.

BAKATUE does not mean Lagoon, as the writer stated. It means "The Opening Of The Lagoon." Weeks prior to the festival, there's a ban on the use of the Lagoon for fishing and on certain social activities, including drumming or making noise or simply, merry-making, and others. The festival marks the lifting or "opening" of the ban on the Lagoon and on the social activities.
It is marked by display of musketry and valor by the Osafo (traditional soldiers) companies in the in the streets. The firing of muskets itself has been under the ban till now.
Boat-racing on the lagoon forms a major part of the cerebration. All the chiefs of the traditional area attend the festival in full regalia in a beautiful, powerful, traditional display of pomp and pageantry, each chief waving a wand or sword of authority, as he "dances" to the drumming of his people who carry him in a palanquin at the durbar ground. The drumming and festivities actually follow the lifting of the ban marked by the firing of muskets,three times in succession, by the chief traditional linguist. This is preceded by "casting of the net" in the lagoon that usually brings out a lot fish to the cheering of the breath-bated crowd. To the lagoon fishers, it's an indication a fat season following the ban for weeks on fishing.
The Omanhen, or the Paramount Chief of Edinaman Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Condua VI, himself usually appears at the durbar in humble white clothes, garnered with green leaves - and no jewery - dancing in his palanquin, waving his wand. The unexpected, wonderful simplicity of his appearance adds ironically immeasurably to his traditional paramount authority.
The Edina Bakatue, in short, is a must-see!

We just ignore it like it's normal!

Please in the name of common decency and sanitation, in the name of the ancestors who died in the slave castle, in the name of the descendants of the slaves who died at Elmina who come to pay a visit, please do something, as a native of Edina (and a very genuinely proud son of the town), to raise awareness of how terrible this "custom" is! Just a simple edict from the Chief of Elmina, in accordance with traditional law, can help to stop this god-forsaken practice!

With reference to history, however, it would have been quite interesting and done much for national coherence. The people of Edina, unlike the rest of the Fantse-speaking areas of the Central Region ("The Fante Confederacy"), sided with the Asante in fighting British colonialism. It is said that taxation by the British without prior agreement and other high-handed policies drove the Edinas into their mutual alliance with the Asantes.

Today's Ghana has descended so much into tribalism that the Asante and Fantse behave as if they were different people. Perhaps this sense of shared history (among other things) could bring some unity in the country. In any case, I would be happy if one traditional area invites the royals of a completely different area to their festival. For example, the people of Edina inviting the Chief of Bolgatanga to their Bakatue!

The Presidents refusal to respond is a sign of a big disarray and lethargy in his government and augurs ill for his government and his party at large. The President is the loser, not the people.

Man Bakatue doesn't literally mean Lagoon; it means, "the Opening of the lagoon", as people are prevented from entering the lagoon to fish a month or so to the festival date. Entry is allowed after the festival, hence "Baka" (lagoon) "tuei" opening (Bakatue). The lagoon is open for fishing, and other activities.

Did the paper check also on the side of the office of the presidency to ascertain the facts of matter.

It is proper and respectful to do so, instead of trying to create a wrong impression about the office of the Presidency.

We also have to understand that there are too many functions that the President has been invited to, and it impossible to honor all of them. In any case, it will be proper to verify facts from the office of the Presidency, instead of presenting a lopsided report on the situation.

Sacrifices that the nations offer are not to God, but, unto demons(1st Corinthians 10 v20), see also, 1st Chronicles 16 v26 as well as Ex 23 v13, as well as Ex 12 v12.

It is time that communities recognize that they have sinned against the Holy One of Israel, and that it is time men of God are sought, during such occasions, to pray and dedicate activities of the day in the hands of God, asking God for forgiveness against the consequences of sinful practices that has trickled down from our forefathers till today. We need to ask and plead for the blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse us from such guilt. Ignorance is no excuse, because everything has been made plain to us, through the WORD of God.

Libation pouring and evoking the names of gods(demons), as well as the offering of all kinds of sacrifices in the name of tradition comes with it curses and unnecessary poverty(see Jeremiah 44).

God himself has offered his Son(the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world), the um blemish sacrifice on behalf of humanity. The true God does not accept any animal or bird etc sacrifices, period. Any such practice, is NOT of God.

Communities have to seek men of God concerning such spiritual practices and ask for advice, because the Holy One of Israel is watching closely.
