Eugene, correct, used clothes are sold in America also, but not in the large quantities as in Ghana and other African countries, besides, just try to know which people buy them.

I watched this documentary on BBC earlier this week and wasn't surprised. I don't think any Ghanaian in the diaspora is surprised as this is something everyone knows. The local fabrics are too expensive and that is what has caused the second-hand market to flourish.

Occasionally, I used to shop at the Tema Station Bend Down Boutique in the late 70's to mid 80's to get unique stuff for college.

To solve this problem the government of Ghana has over the decades made scholarships available for the needed human resource to be trained abroad. In some cases so many people were sent and not even one returned. If you know you are not prepared to work and live in Ghana and would therefore not return do not take the scholarships.

The Takoradi Poly Students who were sacked for applying with fake certificates must be prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction. Just sacking them is not enough.

Nowadays businesses and government organisations have stopped demanding Secondary School Certificate or Basic Education Certificate.

Each of these certificates are important. For example for many tertiary graduates the only certificate that can tell whether one can speak good English or whether one has adequate knowledge of Mathematics is the Secondary School Certificate.

Similarly the only certificate that can tell whether a tertiary graduate has basic knowledge of Ghanaian history, culture, agriculture and the basic geography of West Africa is the Basic Education Certificate.

The difference is, that when people donate clothes to Arfrica or Asia,they are under the IMPRESSION that it is given to poor Africans. hey do not know that it is just stock for a business outfit.

When people give to charity shops abroad, they expect that the proceeds of the sale is used to help the poor or under privileged.

We dot know whether it does not not, but that's a different story.

Foreign Exchange leakage in this country! When restrictions are put in place to curtail this 'crazy' activity,you turn around and complain. Not only are we 'importing diseases of all sorts into our part of the world,we are draining our economy of scarce forex reserves to support real productive activity that will create long-lasting and meaningful jobs.
The gist of this documentary is that we Ghanaians[and for that matter Africans], are own worst enemy in this country! The importation of undergarments that is supposedly banned is still going on with the connivance of a host people in the supply-chain - the importer,port officials[clearing agents,Mins of Trade & Health inspectors,CEPS,Nat Security personnel,BoG officials],the street hawkers,and of course the customers,who gleefully part with their cash to support this senseless activity!

A colleague Nigerian I work with even bought used salt, vinegar, salad cream, food seasonings etc etc from the car boot sale. I asked why? He said, it's £3, abi. All these cost more than that in the market.

Gh has banned used fridges and vehicles over 10 yrs importation into Gh. Tell me if Nigeria has got this importation law? Go to any shipping dock in UK and see what naija's export to their homeland. Oloshie!

One of the reasons why Ghanaians hate and envy Nigerians is the Nigerian glowing and flamboyant traditional wear lifestyle Nigerians exibit when occations demand so, which is virtually average in Ghanaian wears. Obroni Wawu is very common in Ghana, even the technocrats and politicians in Ghana all wear second hand clothings which is highly unlikely in Nigeria. Has anyone noticed the average Ghanaian young ladies all adorn Obroni Wawu and even bluff men in it. Its amazing to see illiterate Ghanaian women in the villages and cities particularly in Kumasi who have access to discarded European cheap second hand cloths all want to dress in Obroni Wawu to deceptively present themselves as educated ladies. The biggest pain in the neck for Ghanaians is also a Nigeria, Ade Adepitan was assigned to ancor the BBC documentary on Ghana's cronic and disgraceful usage of second hand cloths. Uh! What a shame from a country that claim to have gained independence in almost 60 years and yet continue to get everything wrong in every step it takes. Its a Shame!!!

It is not shameful buying and wearing used clothes. Afterall, according to the programme, they are initially given to the charitable shops who in turn sells them at cheaper prices to the under privileged who could be white British or whoever. So it is not only Ghanaians who wear second hand clothes. But the alarming difference is that we do buy used pants which sometimes don't even get washed before being worn. Another worry is we patronise these second hand clothes in such an alarming scale.

If people deem fit to decontaminate or wash these clothes before wearing them, I would not worry.
