February 24, 2014 marked 48 years since Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown by the National Liberation Council (NLC) under the leadership of General Emmanuel K. Kotoka. This exclusive interview by veteran and seasoned journalist and retired editor of the Christian Messenger, Mr G.B.K. OWUSU, gives an insight into the how and why the coup took place.
OWUSU: Why did you overthrow Dr. Kwame Nkrumah?
KOTOKA: The downward trend in our economic affairs resulting in high cost of living. This is due especially to extravagant use of the country’s funds on prestige projects and generally to maladministration, bribery and corruption, nepotism, special treatment of party activists, injustice, suppression and detention of political opponents and general disregard for the constitution.
OWUSU: Generally the NLC enjoys the support of almost all Ghanaians and peace-loving people of the world but not unnaturally the beneficiaries of Nkrumah would have wished him back as president. What safeguards have the NLC provided as security of the state in such a situation?
KOTOKA: I believe the beneficiaries who would like Nkrumah to come back are very few, indeed. It is well known that though some enjoy his generosity they know in their heart of hearts that what they are earning was undeserved. Although they might be sympathisers, it feels that most of them will do nothing to bring them back. However, normal security measures have been taken to prevent actions of subversion, and any person proved to be subversive will be mercilessly dealt with.
OWUSU: Of what use will Nkrumah’s secret military camps be put?
KOTOKA: Although this has not been fully decided, some may be used by the National Army for training purposes.
OWUSU: Now that the disbanded presidential guards have been absorbed into the Army, what observation have you made in respect of their attitude and deportment since the coup?
KOTOKA: Members of the disbanded presidential guards were recruited from the National Army, whether they liked it or not. Having been absorbed back into the National Army they are actually relieved and are very happy among their old friends.
OWUSU: Conscious of the risk involved in the operation of the coup, did you Sir, make any provision for your family in event it proved futile?
KOTOKA: I did not for one moment think of its failure. At any rate I knew my family and any relative of mine would have been killed in case of failure. Therefore, I made no provision for them.
OWUSU: As the Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces, what are your immediate plans?
KOTOKA: I wish I could tell you; but military plans are always secret.
OWUSU: What changes have you observed in the Ghana press since the fall of Nkrumah?
KOTOKA: The press is now free to publish whatever they like within, of course, the normal regulations. They have been doing so, even to extent of criticising the NLC.
OWUSU: Could you furnish me with the background of the coup?
KOTOKA: No.
OWUSU: Thank you very much for your patience. God bless you and the members of the NLC

How I wish I had the wherewithal to appoint this man, Amidu as the Attorney General again.
John Dramani Mahama has no shame and no credibility otherwise he would have appointed this one and only good NDC man Attorney General, not today or yesterday but the very day he assumed the mantle of leadership of this country. But alas, he himself is soiled with corruption big time, hence wouldn't want somebody like Amidu looking over his shoulders. The only way Mahama can win the trust, respect and confidence of the people back in fighting corruption, is to get this man back as soon as possible in the AG's department. Anything less than that is just lip service.
How can we waste the talent of such a person as Mr. Amidu baffles and boggles my mind. Are we that stupid? Damn!

As the days go by more and more people wake up to the reality of the ndc anti Akan hate agenda and their deep rooted corrupt dark souls of evil .This was first initiated by the Ewes and through Mahama and his brothers being championed today by the northerners. We see in Iraq/Syria the announce of the Islamic caliphate state and their map which now includes Ghana and the whole of West Africa .Most people are ignorant of the fact that unlike in Christianity and other religions whereby the leaders or priests are men of peace in Islam their imams or priests advocate for war and destruction of the non believers and when war starts every single one of them assumes the title emir and becomes the captain of a murderous horde as we saw in Libya and with the boko haram. The mosque is not only a place of worship but an army fortress or barracks and that is why they must in the design in every area which is not predominately Muslim its required to have a tall reconnaissance tower. we see in Accra and other places these mosques spring up all over the place at militarily very strategic positions but we are vigilant and when our bloody revolution starts we will raze all these structures to the ground and drive out this menace from our midst . There are some brainwashed idiotic fools who still believe mahama has good intentions but don't know he is a Muslim disguised as a christian which Islam allows and his only agenda is to weaken with corruption and destroy with negligence the Akan economy so the caliphate can be achieved that is why no project of strategic importance can see the light of day under his watch. As for the Ewes his partners in crime all i can say is have you ever wondered why when you go to Togo there the Ewes are very nice people and true African brothers but the moment you cross the Aflao border into Ghana the ayigbe wickedness , hate and evil starts? The ewes in Togo know these ayigbe are so bad and useless that they are not interested in reuniting with them but would rather throw them all into the sea. We should find a way to trick them into taking them back as we Akans will definitely be better off without this foolish idiotic people. Mahama and his brothers have stolen so much that even the bank of Ghana admits they dont know where our foreign reserves have disappeared to , i can tell you where , Turkey , Iran, Dubai and other Muslim countries where its safe for them. Congrats to Kumasi for hitting the nail on the head and exposing the discrimination and abuse of the civil/human rights with the WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO YOU demonstration , today we see idiots and saboteurs trying turn it into a question of mere economics , even one idiot woman came out with a humiliating brainless idea to go naked just to deflect from the main core issue of discrimination against the Akans. My people we have only one problem and if that's solved the rest will be easy , the problem is discrimination and the Anti Akan agenda of part of this mafia ndc . its never about npp , ndc ,left or right wing ideology politics but simply pepeni/ayigbe tribalism against Akan nationalist evolution. They are only attracted to ideas that only destroy our economy like this EPA paramount foolishness with the Europeans or giving away our gold fields to foreigners who never invest here in the name of prudent business , end result our people are exploited and made poorer. we shall never surrender or be fooled again. While we were thinking of a better Ghana for ALL citizens they were thinking of only themselves and destroying the future for our children . We need to have our revolution and secede to form our own state as they will never change.

The man on whose article you are commenting is a northerner and a Christian. not all northerners are Muslims. Why are you so much of Muslim hate. The very people who where part of the team that drafted the anti- corruption bill debunks the human integrity part of corruption and maintains that only strong institutions are needed to fight corruption. Batidam is one such person who thinks that way. But as you said the human factor plays a key role. Yes, you can put the good structures but it takes strong will persons to put such structures in the fore and for a strong willed persons to resist corrupt activities and tendencies.

Martin-Amidu, the new found justice crusader is neither principled nor worthy of the crusader title some have conferred unto him. Christians know Jesus could not have succeeded if had not lived by and adhered to practices and creed he preached. Most authentic Muslims adhere to the teachings of the prophet Mohammed and could not be practicing true Muslim faith if they did not live by creed and teachings.
Why then do some in Ghana shower praises unto Martin-Amidu as the next coming of a Ghanaian Christ? The case that brought Martin-Amidu his 15-muinutes of fame is a technical jargon that did not merit all the hoopla neither did he prove anything noteworthy. Would the Justices on the Ghana Supreme Court rule on a case that was brought before it that were not properly filed through the courts registry processes and bore all the markings of judicial case log acceptance process? The answer is no; they will not accept a case that failed the rules that govern practice and procedures of the courts. Why then did the same court deem it worthy accepting the case brought by Martin-Amidu seeking to establish the legitimacy of a contract between the government of Ghana and Alfred Woyome when the issue that effected the Woyome saga was the activities of ex-president Kufour the then president of Ghana who ignored standing principles, practice and procedures of the government procurement processes via bids?
Does it occur to Martin-Amidu and or the Justices on the Ghana Supreme Court that but for the arrogance and ignorance of Kufour, the Ghana stadia renovation bid process would have been free of litigation, misuse and abuse of funds? Crime in Ghana can only be worn by us all in our daily activities if and when everyone act in accordance and in adherence to established best practices and procedures and not reserve rights to anyone to skirt existing practices and procedures that ensures effectiveness and transparency. The SC of Ghana and Martin -Amidu ignored what is deemed moral for the convenience of joining a lynch mob mentality that has taken hold of Ghana politics.
It was the same SC that deemed it appropriate and legal for a sitting minister, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey to buy a government bungalow from the very government within which he served. It is a joke of immoral proportion for Martin-Amidu to reference a constitution that its practices and interpretation can be validated through a judiciary that is incapable of separating moral principles from political expediency for its own sake and preferences. Asking the larger society to live by laws that exempt thieves and vagabond in the NDC, NPP and everyone above executrix post is to ask for Ghanaians to acquiesce to stupidity and immorality that brought down Sodom and Gomorra and those with moral values and principled cannot be induced.

The only problem that truly undermines our efforts to curb corruption is the lack of integrity among our leaders. Period!!
And curbing Corruption to a reasonable level could have protected our Economy from falling into its current abysmal state.
So, thank you for laying it all out to show what really is amiss. With this explanation, our Political leaders, including both the Executive and the Legislature, have no excuse, legally and morally, to ensure our Laws on Corruption are implemented. The Corruption thrives because the enforcers have no will to enforce the Laws.
One thing I wish we would include in the Contitutional Review is limiting the immunity of the Executive from prosecution. If the immunity clause was injected into our Constitution to prevent any retaliation on the former membership of the Military Juntas leading up to the 4th Republic, it should have not trickled down the lane to protect performances of the Executives in the 4th Republic and beyond.
That is to say, the immunity could have been established to protect only what might have occurred prior to the 4th Republic but not what an Executive might do from that point onwards.
For as much as I understand, the immunity was supposed to prevent the likelihood of cyclical retributions from already delineated opposing Political sympathies that emerged out of the Juntas era, and give us a fresh start with the Rule of Law in the subsequent Republics.
Therefore, while a President might not be charged for illicit actions that occurred under his watch prior to the 4th Republic, he could be charged for any crimes he might commit subsequently, if we had limited immunity.
I strongly believe that the impunity that the Executive subscribes to in curbing Corruption would not prevail now, had we limited the immunity to the temporal space before the 4th Republic, and specific allowable actions by the Executive that would produce unintended illicit consequences.
Right now, from our Police to the Judiciary, Parliament to the Presidency, the level of will to enforce our Laws that could curb Corruption is pitifully low. And that is the overwhelming reason for our Nation's retrogression. Now new Laws would be needed if only the will were rediscovered. Every group seems to be determined to protect its skin and that of each of its affiliates from facing the Law. And in the absence of any action against Corruption, many tend to engage in it.
Long Live Ghana!!!

mr amid is gunning for the presidency at the expense of the incumbent. june 4th declaration were mere smokescreen to fool Ghanaians. The leadership were consumed by envy and jealousy. After Dr Limann took over, the monies that were supposedly collected by AFRC was nowhere to be found. Vehicles confiscated had engines and other parts removed. During the dusk to dawn curfew, car tyres were removed when only soldiers and police could go out. They were stealing left ,right and centre. june 4th and 31st dec are shameful episodes in our history. why did they make sure pndc could not be probed? Mr hamidu was there and he could perhaps tell us why. Hamidu has no antidote to corruption and should stop pillorying others. how effective did he stop corruption during his tenure as AG?
