  One marvels at the sheer paralysis of the Ghanaian government in the face of the deteriorating conditions of the economy. In economies round the world when deficits in the budget have been persistent and debt is a problem what governments have done is to introduce a period of austerity to balance the budget. These solutions inevitably involves the cutting of government expenditure and the introduction of increases in taxation. Austerity may also involve retrenchment in public sector employment, especially where there are bloated bureaucracies and underemployment in the public sector. Surely the economists in the Ministry of Finance are not unaware of such solutions. But in Ghana though every economist knows that the emperor has no clothes none of them is able to say so to the hearing of the emperor. I looked at the 22 recommendations from the Senchi indaba and did not see any recommendation for austerity. Meanwhile prayers are being said for the arrest of the downward spiral of the cedi exchange rate in relation to major currencies. Oh, what shadows we are and what shadows we pursue!

  There is an urgent need to balance the little import duty on these nonessential consumables against its negative effect on the balance of payment and the GHC.
  Until the import bill is significantly reduced and a positive trade balance achieved,hope in the economy and John Mahama/NDC will be evasive.
  The recovery of the global prices of cocoa and gold is not going to be meteoric and spontaneous.So Seth Terkper should not be over confident.
  It is herculean to reverse the choking loans,the high rate of inflation,unemployment and the high interest rate.
  The recovering USA economy and a strong USD will continue to be a thorn in the flesh of the GHC.
