Read this interview and ask yourself if our politicians have changed since 1966.

February 24, 2014 marked 48 years since Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown by the National Liberation Council (NLC) under the leadership of General Emmanuel K. Kotoka. This exclusive interview by veteran and seasoned journalist and retired editor of the Christian Messenger, Mr G.B.K. OWUSU, gives an insight into the how and why the coup took place.
OWUSU: Why did you overthrow Dr. Kwame Nkrumah?
KOTOKA: The downward trend in our economic affairs resulting in high cost of living. This is due especially to extravagant use of the country’s funds on prestige projects and generally to maladministration, bribery and corruption, nepotism, special treatment of party activists, injustice, suppression and detention of political opponents and general disregard for the constitution.
OWUSU: Generally the NLC enjoys the support of almost all Ghanaians and peace-loving people of the world but not unnaturally the beneficiaries of Nkrumah would have wished him back as president. What safeguards have the NLC provided as security of the state in such a situation?
KOTOKA: I believe the beneficiaries who would like Nkrumah to come back are very few, indeed. It is well known that though some enjoy his generosity they know in their heart of hearts that what they are earning was undeserved. Although they might be sympathisers, it feels that most of them will do nothing to bring them back. However, normal security measures have been taken to prevent actions of subversion, and any person proved to be subversive will be mercilessly dealt with.
OWUSU: Of what use will Nkrumah’s secret military camps be put?
KOTOKA: Although this has not been fully decided, some may be used by the National Army for training purposes.
OWUSU: Now that the disbanded presidential guards have been absorbed into the Army, what observation have you made in respect of their attitude and deportment since the coup?
KOTOKA: Members of the disbanded presidential guards were recruited from the National Army, whether they liked it or not. Having been absorbed back into the National Army they are actually relieved and are very happy among their old friends.
OWUSU: Conscious of the risk involved in the operation of the coup, did you Sir, make any provision for your family in event it proved futile?
KOTOKA: I did not for one moment think of its failure. At any rate I knew my family and any relative of mine would have been killed in case of failure. Therefore, I made no provision for them.
OWUSU: As the Commander of the Ghana Armed Forces, what are your immediate plans?
KOTOKA: I wish I could tell you; but military plans are always secret.
OWUSU: What changes have you observed in the Ghana press since the fall of Nkrumah?
KOTOKA: The press is now free to publish whatever they like within, of course, the normal regulations. They have been doing so, even to extent of criticising the NLC.
OWUSU: Could you furnish me with the background of the coup?
KOTOKA: No.

is now what the people of this nation are experiencing, unemployment is so

Mahama needs to go the World Bank to beg for loan of $156 million American dollars before Sanitary Pads can be bought for our girls and our mothers

Nana Yaw, the state owned electricity company is a waste and a burden on the state. There is lack of investment to renew the infrastructure, most of the power produced (nearly 30%) is wasted through inefficient distribution and the workers collect bribe from consumers to do illegal connections. There are millions of illegal connections by consumers and state agencies do not pay their bills as well as the company failing to send bills and collect money from consumers. As a result of all these, the unit of electricity for the consumer in Ghana is very expensive. This is made worst by the falling cedi.

For the above reasons, with the exception of the depreciating cedi, privitisation will be good for the consumer. However, the government must ensure that whichever private investor ends up owning the company, they invest in new infrastructure and technology, especially in the area of distribution. The repeat of the Vodafone experience should be avoided (Vodafone promised to invest in Ghana Telecom when it acquired majority shares but that did not happen). All the investment done for far has been generated internally mostly by drastic reduction of workers. The company did not bring in any new additional investment from outside as promised.

Regarding the fear of workers, they are worried that with privitisation, they cannot do illegal connections and steal from the company.

The main problem is the quarterly price adjustment requirement. That is dangerous in view of the current state of the cedi. Unless the cedi is stablised it would be suicidal for the government to do so unless subsidy will be provided for the poor. Again, even in the developed world utility prices are not adjusted every quarter but either by the prices of energy on the world market or annually. In fact, here in the UK there are offers such as one, two and three year fixed prices which consumers can opt for for peace of mind (though the currency is very stable).

They can still wholesale it to the distribution companies. Just like in the US, Most nuclear plants are owned by the government but the distribution is owned by private companies. Good move. Hopefully, the company can install smart meters

This is long over-due. Nigeria has already done it. Break ECG up into regional components and sell them. Govt should keep 49% shares for each regional entity. Gridco can remain as one entity.

All electricity consumers from household to industries should once again decide on a date to demonstrate against this evil privatisation of ECG to access $500 million second compact of MCC is a disgrace while this government spent $4 billion(GHc8.7 billion) to buy power from EC and Chiefs and Imams.Mahama has already sold Merchant Bank and ECG and then sold Ghana itself.If Ghanaians do not stand for their destiny to fight and protect their assets then they put their self in danger.Private will any price per unit and you can't do anything about it use it or cut the service yourself.Tax payers this ECG is your why sit aloof unconsent for Mahama to sell ECG for him to access common $500 million for what?So where are the bonds that Government purchase for tax payer to pay in future?
