I am excited with this idea of Jerry taking up the chairmanship. Indeed he will infuse the needed impetus into the NDC. In fact his father figure presence and his day to day involvement in the activities of the party will see some decency and purposefulness in the party instead of the present situation where the party seem to have nobody to put members in check. Mahama has been an extreme disappointment with his soft soft approach which is making persons who are real outsiders to hijack the party and use it for their own ends. Rake the case of somebody like Prosper Bani. This man has never been a known NDC member. What he does is simply to put an NDC muffler round his neck when it is an NDC activity which is being attended by his friend the President at which he is present. NDC, please get Papa J to the chairmanship and I can assure you the bleak picture that the NPP has carved of Ghana in the minds of Ghanaians will be completely obfuscated.

As for the argument about re-denomination coming from the camp of the NDC and their allies like Bernard Mornah l'll say these arguments are from little brains, lazy minds that don't think. They prefer to see the old ways of carrying bulk monies around which get attracted by armed robbers and not safe for business because they have no interest in creating businesses of their own. They orefer to move from radio station to radio station and talk and just depend on government. If they truly think nocking off zeros from the cedi is the reason for this hopeless economy then the solution is easy, the government should just start adding the zeros to any new currency printed, and gradually face out the ones with less zeros. Useless minds turning themselves into selfish opinion leaders.

He redenominated our cedi to the extent that the the one pesewa coin was easily swallowed by innocent toddlers. How many persons are using the one pesewa coin today. We were mislead into thinking that it was good to have small number of notes on us. Those days are gone when people feared him because of his murderous tendencies, and the fact that he had armed his cadres and loyal soldiers to the teeth, and could do anything and go scot free. Things have changed, and this country will never allow itself to be governed by people like Rawlings suffering from mental dementia.
One thing is clear, Jerry Rawlings is enjoying all the privileges of a former Head of State, and if he agrees to contest for the position of Chairman of the NDC, then those privileges, including his current residence must be given back to the state. Fine, if the NDC is in power, they may decide to overlook it, but if a new party comes to power, Rawlings will lose all the privileges, and be forcefully be evicted from his residence. This will surely come to pass.
Ghanaians must be serious,because I can vouchsafe that John Mahama is more knowledgeable than Jerry Rawlings in as far as managing the economy is concerned. The difference is that Jerry had intellectuals to help his Junta and during his constitutional rule, whiles John Mahama hasn't got the confidence to work with intellectuals, but flirting with school boys in politics.
The economic challenges facing Ghana today as a result of incompetence of the NDC government should not be trivialized by any political party. It was Jerry Rawlings' back economic policies that compelled JAK to apply for HIPC in 2000 to save this country and usher it to middle income status in 2008. The NDC government coming into power in 2009, has mismanaged all the good things initiated and sustained under JAK administration, and indications are that the next government after John Mahama administration would have to apply for HIPC status again to salvage this country from total collapse.
Our salvation is not in the hands of Jerry Rawlings, who couldn't even pass his promotion examination in the Army before imposing himself on Ghanaians in 1979/81 out of frustration. For those who know jerry well, he is a spendthrift, and would like to depend on state resources for his survival because he has no business acumen. He is also very tribalistic and vindictive, and above all, very envious of the successes of hard working people who are not from his party and tribe.
We need to move forward as a country, and forget about yesterday people like Jerry Rawlings and his cohorts.

I can say with the greatest confidence that the denomination of a country's currency has nothing to do with its value.It is for the sole purpose of convenience that a currency is denominated.As an illustration,it is easy to transport a $100.00 bill than it is one hundred dollars in single bills.Whether one has one $100.00 bill or one hundred single dollar bills,the amount of goods and services that the money can buy remains the same.
The value is determined by the interaction of supply and demand.The price for exchanging one currency for the other is the EXCHANGE RATE.
Since currencies are used as media of exchange,stores of value,etc(all economic activities),the nature of one's economy, and of course political stability and indexation,affects the volatility of the currency.That is, a strong economy will inspire confidence in a currency which will in turn lead to its acquisition/purchase for investment activities.Thereby, creating demand for the currency.This will strengthen the currency.
To illustrate with the USD/GHC situation,the USD is the Primary Currency, whilst the GHC is the Secondary Currency.A quote of $1.00/GHC2.00 is a good example.
When the GHC strengthens,relative to the USD, as a result of a strong economy(Low inflation,low unemployment,low debt/GDP ratio,surplus trade balance,high standard of living,high foreign exchange reserves and investments,high GDP growth rate,a strong financial system,budget surplus,high production and consumption of goods and services),the exchange rate can be $1.00/GHC1.50.Few GHC is now exchanged for the same unit of the primary currency(USD).
In the same vain,when the economy is ailing,the GHC will depreciate/weaken against the USD(reduced demand,currency damping).The currency cannot perform its traditional functions as a store of value,a unit of account,a measure of value,a medium of exchange efficiently.Meaning that more GHC will be required in exchange for the same amount of the Primary Currency.$1.00/GHC3.66 for instance.
The Primary Currency maintains its unit always.The fluctuation is depicted by changes in the value of the Secondary Currency(GHC).
Whilst the Bank of Ghana can easily print more GHC when the need arises,it cannot print more USD.The Federal Reserve Bank prints the USD.
The USD MUST be generated through:
(a)International trade(exports)
(b)Foreign grants in cash
(c)Tourism
(d)Foreign loans(bond issues,IMF/World Bank,Bank Syndicates)
(e)Incoming cash investments(foreign direct transfers)
(f)Diaspora remittances to relatives in Ghana(an advantage of brain drain).
The GHC was comparatively stable during the presidencies of JAK and Prof.Mills because Ghana's economy was buoyant.I recall a single digit inflation during those times of past glory.The prices of cocoa and gold had mercy on Ghana.Ghana was the fastest growing economy in the world,according to the IMF.
The economic indices inherited by John Mahama have slipped into a coma.The cogent reason the GHC is shedding daily tears.Not John Mahama,Seth Terkper or Dr.Kofi Wampah can offer her their sympathies.They are adamant and blinded to her pleadings and tears and are wallowing in tries and errors.The latest being a bond issue and an expectation of the upward adjustment of the prices of cocoa and gold.A merely speculative venture.
The GHC needs a more permanent solution than a one-time issue of a bond.Our best bet will be an aggressive hunt for USD from non-traditional exports,tourism?
The prices of cocoa and gold will rally in our favor eventually.But they do not happen spontaneously.The upward adjustment will be painful and sluggish.The GHC would have suffered a great deal in waiting for the upward trending.
So the hollow argument of attributing the plight of the GHC to its past denomination does not hold any water,in my humble opinion.
Ghana should seriously mobilize every opportunity to export more as our exports have become cheaper.
The growth of the US economy will by itself produce a strong USD which will destabilize the GHC.And so will an over-valued GHC(it will adjust to its true rate).The only consolation for the GHC is that the FED is also concerned about an overvalued USD which will make US exports expensive and lead to reduced export revenues.
If the JAK administration is being accused of OVERVALUATION of the GHC relative to the USD,then that is a different dialogue/discussion.But i will not buy that.The panicked and confused John Mahama economy is the culprit.
Once again,until the tooth picks and hot dogs and the innumerable irrelevant imports are curtailed,some seriousness introduced into our import program and the quest for sustainable exports for continuous flow of foreign earnings(through diversification of our exports and markets)are embarked upon,the GHC will continue to be branded the worst performing currency.
I expect the Bank of Ghana to be more serious is its struggle to stabilize the GHC.In this regard,the Bank should
(1)Retain a sizable amount of export proceeds,an 80/20 split.BoG 80% USD,GHC equivalent paid to exporter.20% exporter USD can be kept in Ghana or Utopia,with a preference for a bank in Ghana.
(2)Impose severe monetary penalties for failure to repatriate export proceeds or on time.
(3)Coordinate its monetary policy on the Forex market with the government's fiscal policies
(4)Pay attention to the US economic news.
To John Mahama.It is an open secret that Ghana is broke.Our debt/GDP ratio tells it all.It is time to be honest with Ghanaians and go to the IMF/world Bank for a bail out.

Mr Kuffour only did away with the last four zeroes only to establish the GHcedis. Doing away with the last two zeroes left the new amount in new Pesewas.
Mr Rawlings currency of the old cedis has a minimum goods value in the five thousand Old Cedis (C5ooo/5pgh)which could only buy satchet water, sweet, peanut, Banana, etc.
The value is the same in the new Mr Kuffour's Cedis currency exchange. The five pesewa (5p)/(C5000)had the same purchasing power, buying: peanut banana, satchet water, sweet, etc

The main good reasons for the portable value of the Mr Kuffour's new currency exchange are:
1. So many people lost the Cedi Millioniar title.
2. Psychologically, armed robbery rate dropped as Gh100 lost the attraction of C1million
3. Monetary calculation was in face with the schools involving decimal currency arithematic
4. Carrying money about was handy and easy
