THE LOW adult literacy rate in the Upper East Region is said to be responsible for the high rate of poverty in the region, making it the poorest in the country. The region's adult literacy rate stands at 29.7%, whilst the Great Accra and Eastern regions have 87.9% and 73.5% respectively. Ashanti region is next with 72.8% rate whilst Upper West has 30.9% and Northern region has 32.1% literacy rate.

The Regional Coordinator of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED), of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, Issah Mohammed Imoro, said this during the overall regional reading competition, between the Bongo District and Bolgatanga Municipality.
