MILLS WON ON HIS THIRD ATTEMPT SO WHY CHANGE NANA?

Mills and Nana Addo are entirely two different personalities from different political groups. Mills was imposed on the NDC at Swedru; he was once a Vice President; he was a professor and nicknamed "Asomdweehene"; he changed his running-mate on three occasions (Martin Amidu, Mohammed Mumuni, John Mahama); his popular votes were appreciating as he lost - 44%, 48%, and 50.23%; he lost to only one Candidate in the person of J.A. Kufuor; he won not less than four regions; Mills was only 63 years on his third attempt; he didn't compete with an incumbent president on his third attempt. However, unlike Mills, Nana Addo was elected from out of 17 aspirants; he has maintained Dr. Bawumia as running-mate; his popular votes have been depreciating from 49.13% in 2008 to 47.74% in 2012; he has lost to two different candidates - Mills and Mahama; he will be competing against an incumbent government who had beaten him in previous election; he has maintained only two regions; he will be 73 years old on his third attempt. Apart from the above differences, participants of the 2016 general election will be different from those who voted in 2008. Mills was very incompetent leader, who paid dubious judgement debts to his cronies before he kicked the bucket. If we go by that logic, does it mean Nana too would emulate Mills' bad leadership? In summary, Mills proved that if you compete against the same opponent twice, you will lose. Mills then came up against a new Candidate, Akufo-Addo, and Mills won. In Ghana's history, no one has won against a candidate that they have previously lost to. If Akufo-Addo knows he can win presidential election on his third attempt, is he then admitting that he lost the 2012 elections? If so, why did he consume our precious time at the Supreme Court?

Let's stop the Mills-Nana Addo comparison for once.

We cannot compare Nana Addo to Prof.Mills because Mills was leading a fragmented party, he was not even popular in his own party.At least 3 different parties were formed under his leadership of Ndc but he managed to standfast all the Ndc strongholds in 4 regions.This gave him advantage over Spio Garbrah and the rest during the primaries for 2008 general elections.Although Nana Addo has not lost in Npp's strongholds Ashanti and Eastern regions but nothing shows that he can win any other region in 2016.This is the genesis of the problem, unlike Prof.Mills there was a strong believe that if effective campaign strategy is put in place he could win in the Central and Western region where he comes from.You cannot say this in Nana's case.Ndc did not elect Mills 3 times based on popularity but on strategic planning.Now listen, Nana Addo has been always popular since long time but that does not translate to votes , you guys should know that.Thank you.

Npp will be naive to elect Nana Addo again.Let me make it clear here, Ndc did not elect Mills 3 times because he was popular.No way, far from that, Mills was the most unpopular flagbearer in Ghana history.His first attempt brought division and break aways in his party.He even failed to win in his own region both Western and Central including that of his wife, Greater Accra.The second attempt did not make him any popular either but he changed his strategy by bringing in a new running mate.So the question is why did the Ndc present him the third time with all these division, defeats and challenges? I will tell you why.Now listen, on the strategic leve, Prof.Mills was able to maintain all the 4 strongholds of NDC, Volta and the 3 northern regions steadily in 2000 and 2004.Mind you, Ghana has 10 regions so if 4 regiongs always gave Mills between 44 to 46% of the valid votes cast then it means if he can manage to win another one region he will surely carry the day that was the strategy.Ndc did not waste time to find strategy to win in the Central region where they believe Prof.Mills have to put all his efforts because that region can swing to any party.It is also clear that winning the Central region comes with advantages and opportunities because their voting pattern corresponds exactly to that of Greater
Accra and Western regions.Ndc found it stratigical to elect Mills again because he comes from the Central region and could win in that area if they focus there with effective campaign strategy and that is what they did to win the 2008 general elections.Nana Addo case is not the same at all, his party has not been fragmented, his popularity is intact and won all the 2 elections in his home town.I do not see any strategic advantage bringing him back to lead Npp, he might as well win but the risk is very very high to take.Thank you.
