In US, the government release funds, equipment and all the necessary technology teachers will need for their work to the schools from k-12 to University before the school year begins. At the end of the year, the school then account to the government whatever amount left over. This is not what we have in Ghana, so please don't blame the professors. Government MUST fix the broken system

What system has gov't established for teachers to revise their notes? In the state, we are required to attend "fully paid" professional workshops 150hrs ever 5yrs else government will pull your teaching license.

What a reasoning! In any case you 1000+ first class graduates each year can hardly spell their names correctly even when you were chopping books and research allawa waa-waa-waa! Don't deceive the public. The government says it will no longer give every half-baked lecturer these allowances but will but the money in a consolidated fund. Each lecturer will have to justify the request for the allowance to be granted by the various University Councils. Is that too much for you to bear?

The BRA is in arrears and this needs to be addressed and until this is tackled and exhausted completely to the satisfaction of all parties, the reopening dates should remain suspended.
The P(NDC)military cum political party from all indications, have never had the development of the Ghanaian society through education, as the bedrock of sustainable long lasting growth of the country, and their actions speaks volumes where the educational sector is concerned.
It would be recalled that in the mid to late nineties(90's), there was a 9 month industrial standoff between UTAG and the government which threw the whole academic calendar, research work and the educational cycle out of sync, leading to very detrimental effects on not just the country in terms of trained manpower to man industry, health, education, finance, agriculture, etc, etc but also had a cost component to the overall GDP growth of the country, not to talk of students who out of frustration had to fall out of school completely.
The issues have gone and comeback full circle, and this time it is the whole educational structure right from the basic level to the tertiary level, involving CHASS at the basic level through POTAG, the technical arm of tertiary education to UTAG the research and development arm of tertiary education.
The NDC gov't has never demonstrated the prudence required to govern the country, and the facts bear this notion out, with historical empirical evidence to support this position.
The current situation bespeaks a revisiting of the mid 90's debacle and increasingly, it is drumming home the fact that, the Mahama/Amissah Arthur led NDC gov't is not the right fit for the country and has never been the right fit and would never be the right fit for the country in terms of good governance, effective and a results oriented leadership that translates to real positive growth and development.
Going into 2016, it is imperative that the Mahama NDC administration is massively, massively voted out and kept out, so Ghana can be put on the path of serious growth and development. This current state of governance is but a nightmarish joke.

Did you KNUST invented all these? Do a little research and understand the true meaning of invention? These items have been long invented, KNUST only copied but have even done worse than the original product. Give me the product types and codes of these supposed invention. If you have been to any tertiary institution in Ghana before, you will know for a fact that these professors and soo much degree holders have done little or no research at all. They still churn out their old pamphlets they wrote decades ago to their students. Take a lecture notes of 2010 social students and compared them to 1992 students, you will see little difference. All they do these days is copy and paste which no one needs allowance to do. All you need is internet connection and windows explorer which the universities have already provided. So why should the government again pay them for research and book allowance which they have obviously not used for the purpose intended. Ghana needs to move faster than these stupid party political tricks. Back man dont need democracy anymore-we either adopt communism or military rule. we need discipline and not this stupid freedom of speech, human rights and freedom of association which is slowly killing our nation. we can do better.

Lecturers elsewhere in the world rely on university and public libraries or buy their own teaching book. Lecturers are expected to produce learned articles or books in their own fields. To facilitate the this, institution or public funds are available to all interested academics to access, provided they have academically sound research proposals. It seems to me that Ghanaian lecturers regard research allowances as supplementary salary. How many of the past research recepients have produced academic papers or books? I fully support the idea of National Research Fund, disbursable upon a research project adjudged by an independent body as sound and likely to contribute to knowledge in the field concerned. This is why I support the idea of National Research Fund.

This is exactly what Nunoo -Mensah is saying. How could UTAG have no shame in threatening to churn out mediocre graduates! This is irresponsible and unprofessional for such a bunch of so- called academics. So you turn out mediocre graduates today, who may not be able to compete with well trained and qualified graduates coming from outside Ghana to take up the jobs and be in positions of responsibility and you'll be crying foul! Do they know that turning out half- baked graduates has very serious repercussion on the economy e.g unemployment and social disability . I am surprised the so called UTAG doesn't know that economic advancement is not only the level of the 'rate of exchange- i.e cedi' Who and how were these guys recruited into our sectors of higher education?. I want to hear the response from the NUGS or other students bodies in Ghana. What have you lot researched all these years apart from you copying what other international academics have produced and photocopying them for your students at cost?. You have no interest in the advancement of Ghana, but only your greedy and arrogant interest. You don't care and obviously not interested in Ghana's future. My advice to you lot is that 'when you produce mediocre graduates, your children and generations would be thought by the half-baked graduates you have produced. Go to the ant and acquire knowledge and wisdom so that you can teach and educate others for the advancement of mankind. Ghana belongs and needs all to help build the nation. Stop your daft, negative and unintelligent mentality. Salary/wages should depend on experience, skills and productivity not just paper qualifications. I thought UTAG should know this.

UTAG has not rejected the setting up of the National Research Fund. UTAG welcomes it in addition to the research and book allowances but not in place of these allowances. It is important to emphasize that these allowances are part of the lecturers' conditions of service. Therefore no entity can take away those allowances. That is what government is claiming to do which is illegal.
