To say that 28% of the candidates got passes (A1 - C6) in at least 6 subjects and hence 72% of them failed, is a display of illogical reasoning.
Included in the 72% who did not pass in at least 6 subjects are candidates who passed in 5 or 4 or 3 or 2 or one or no subject(s). Only candidates who failed in all their subjects can be said to have failed - these candidates will form a small fraction of the total. For instance, a candidate who passed 5 subjects and failed 3 subjects did not fail his/her WASSCE.

One would have expected the minister of education and a professor as such to have given some figures to substantiate her claims about the 96% passes. We may understand her claim to mean that 96% of candidates got at least one pass. But what do candidates do with one subject pass in at least 6 to 8 total number of subjects.
Prof Agyeman should have gone further to gave statistics of how many passed with a grade of A to D say, or with grades above E+, as well as how many passed with grades above E+ in more than 6 subjects, or 4 subjects. This would have been a better analysis to counter the 28% pass that is being highlighted all over the place.
She should have kept mute rather than come out and give uncompleted information. She must know she is a minsiter of education, and a professor!!!

On Monday, 25 August we were informed by GNA that 72% students failed the 2014 WASSCE, with only 28% qualifying for tertiary admission; then a day later, 26 Aug. the sector minister, Dr. Agyemang tells us on Joy FM station that 96% of Ghanaian students passed the WASSCE. We need a statistician to interpret the results to us, objectively informing us about the successes and the failures, and the percentage that gained admission to tertiary institutions.

We need accurate data to make informed decisions.
