I wish the government did not buckle and stood firm to tell these “lecturers” or more appropriately “senior instructors” that the government does not have the funds to pay for “book and research” allowance; and give them ultimatum to go back and teach or get fired. May be they will lose the election but they will save the country a lot funds. The government should seriously revamp tertiary education in Ghana. They should do away with duplication of courses among the state universities and review all programs to determine their relevance to the country now or in the near future. They should then eliminate the useless ones and FIRE the corresponding lecturers. I am pretty sure they can cut the government expenditure by 50 percent and focus on the useful relevant programs. What is point of producing “half-educated” or illiterate graduates to sell kenkey or dog-chains?
On another point not the government should reorganize other public institutions including the civil service and state corporations. There is too much deadwood, corruption, bribery, mismanagement and poor attitude in these organizations. The heads or (senior) managers don’t care a hoot. They come to work (collect bribes, philander, steal, etc.) at 10:30am and go to lunch at 12:00pm; return at 2:00pm and go home at 4:00pm. On Fridays they just show up for a few minutes and then jet off to funerals to chase women and fill their pot bellies with booze.
I am sick and tired of weak and indecisive government and corrupt public servants and lazy lecturers and selfish inhuman doctors. May be we need a real “REVOLUTION” ; or better patriotic nationalist leader(s) who won’t kotow to any selfish striking group of imbecilic knuckleheads who may attempt to hold the country hostage.

I wish the Government will learn a lesson from this and henceforth put its foot down to deal with all the situation of all the vices that you have mentioned in your contribution. Our Civil Servants must be made to understand the role they play in this nation building rather than working for about five hours a day and collecting eight hours a day working salary. As the Polytechnic Teachers strike, least said about it the better but this must give the government a warning to come out with a legislation regarding illegal strikes - No work, No Pay. We can't witness another political inspired strike to hold this country hostage. Thanks again your wonderful contribution Ghanaba.

She knows that you cannot unilaterally vary the conditions of service of any category of workers. It is ironical that she has been the source of this problem given her educational pedigree and experience. The resolution of the problem is good for students, lecturers, those who do business in tertiary institutions, the country's economy and the entire country. It is hoped that the country will not relive this experience.

The reason why Ghana is failing is the posture of employees, especially unionized employees. The law on strikes should be the first to be amended when parliament resumes sitting . Strikes in Ghana should not last for more than 4 days. No striking worker should be paid if he walks away from the negotiation table to embark or continue a strike, government should have the balls to sack recalcitrant striking workers for the sake of public good. Enough of this backward anachronistic approach to nation building. Watch it most of this protracted strikes are led by highly political exposed persons. When you see a union leader address governments rudely you immediately know he has a political motive, he usually is not a fun if the ruling government. Let us stop being hypocrites and call a spade a spade. They say oh are members are intelligent they know what they are about but we know how leaders sometimes ambush issues to the disquiet of the body the represent. Classic is this POTAG president who turned out to be a politically exposed person. His leadership has cost students too much, why didn't he ask his people to forfeit their August pay so we all will see he really believes in his cause, if he had done that he would have earned full marks as a hero who lead his people across the Red Sea. Their ending of their boycott because the government got tough makes them come out bad, a laugh stock and an association without spine. In fact nation wreckers bordering on selfishness and an action that will make workers suffer pay losses if they go on strikes. James you lost it big time. You did not have the balls to announce the cancellation of the strike, the joy of that fell on your general secretary. It means you lost the vote and lost your head, buddy your position is weakened, I bet you will lose the next election for prez for leading POTAG into a Pyrrhic victory.

Is there any sense for keeping the striking teachers at home, pay them and eventually bowing to them?
What is the sense in holding meetings upon meetings and acrimonious languages on the national media to eventually co-towing to POTAG?
Its a shame and no sensible government would do that. Civilised statesmen would have resigned after yielding to pressure to change stance! Here in Ghana, it is out. It can never happen.

The government is saving money for you and me not a few who are self-centered. If the next government thinks the present regime is best they can reverse it. As happened with VAT and other levies you have the opposition trying to make politics out of it only to maintain what they opposed when in power. Let us put Ghana first else we sink. This government is reeling under the weight of misjudged costly projects, ie. gyeeda, rlg, Zoomlion, subah, etc just like Npp did with PSI. The national kitty is not pitless so lots of realignments ought to be done to plug loopholes and frivolous expenditure. Some argue that if you had money for woyome why not me? It can't be you because money is not infinite, once gone it will take forever to be retrieved, that is if it is retrievable at all so that argument is not intelligent it is only emotional. It is only God who has infinite resources.

When I started UST we received allowance every week end and were fed thrice for free and slept in rooms for free. In fact hall executives slept singly in their rooms and I did because I was a hall executive. The issue is should I say it must be same too today? In a nations life things change. We have increased population due to effective fight against infant mortality, the rate of expansion of social facilities is lower than the rate of population growth. Mind you west Africa has also changed and there is a large immigrant population too so government ought be aided rather than distracted with self-centered demands.

In a Nation where Strikes is a daily occurrence, the decision by the Deputy Minister of Education,Ablakwa to Seize the opportunity not to pay POTAG workers who have been on a strike for more than 3 months , was the best option for the admin to follow to put a stop to the rampant,irresponsible strikes in the Country ,for ever.Because all would learn the lesson of "No work, No pay " But a minister of Labour who has not foresight,and doesn't know what he's about, blows that away.
Present your Research and Estimates for funding,if any.Does that calls for strike action for 3 months, and expect to draw your Salaries at the end of the month ? Only in Ghana !

Powers should be granted to employers to seek sequestration of assets of the unions if the law is broken.
