Cedi has devalued by 40+% and inflation is far in excess of 30%. Simple check send your parents 100 usd and let them change same in a forex bureau. they will get cedis in excess of 40% than they got for the same amount of usd u gave them last year November. Check with your dad or any of your friend s who give s his wife home money or chop money for the house and whose famility size has not changed for the past one year. Ask him how much he was giving out last yeat July and how much he is giving out now and itwill be in excess of 40%. You name them: starting from the so called currency analyst of Gold Coast Securities,Sam Ampah, followed by one economist, Dr. Gatsi, and then Nii Moi Thompson, Dr. Kwame Pianim, and now the Government Statistician, Dr. Phelomena Nyarko. They all danced around the substantive issues raised by Dr. Bamuniah and in the end said nothing. They are yet to actually challenge the otherwise simple and applied analysis made by Dr. Bawumiah.

I would have thought that for once, Ghanaians will seize the opportunity to get these key institutions sit up, up their game, and become more accountable to Ghanaians and not NDC. Rather, we have as usual turned it into a political football. Thank God the economy does not treat or affect NDC supports/sympathisers/foot-soldiers and communicators differently from the rest of Ghanaians. The government should be thankful that Dr. Bawumiah is not selfish with his God-given talent and ingenuity. God bless you, Dr. Bawumiah

Moving forward from '09 what are we seeing of the economy? The downtrend tells mismanagement which you people find it hard to grasp.

Tell me any country run by a government with good calibre who will come with a rate of exchange that differs from what the populace is depending on their daily activities and insist that still the legitimate official rate is as such? If such is true, individuals would then walk into BoG and buy their hard currencies without going to the cut-throat commercial banks and the Forex Bureaus. You may like it or not - The Cedi is the weakest currency under the planet now. Your government need to wake up from its performance slumber to alleviate this situation. NPP left a solid economic platform but woefully, NDC has wrecked it to total annihilation. E&OE.

In 2008, the Government of which Bawumia was a part of went bankrupt, they couldn't even get $125m to pay teachers. They had to shameless sell Ghana telecom to raise that money on the back of a contrived excuse that Ghana Telecom was unprofitable. During that period, Dep. BOG Governor Bawumia was a director on Ghana Telecom' Board, where was his monetary acumen to enable Ghana Telecom take advantage of the then Telecom Market to make profit? Where was his monetary acumen of the deputy Bog Governor to advise his NPP administration on how to use state resources to raise money to meet its budget commitments? And then you lost power, you come and throw this highly incompetent individual to dare the people of Ghana into a debate.

For your information, forex currencies are the property of the Bank of Ghana under the law. Foreign currencies sold at retail rates by CBs are loaded with profits for the CBs and not for the Bank of Ghana who operates with motives that is NOT only solely profit-oriented. The Bank of Ghana is charge of the local currency so it has the responsibility towards it too in whatever it does

Mahama Ayariga was then the Minister of Information and was extremely vocal to the point of fuming, about the need for the NDC gov't operatives and political appointees to learn to lie through their teeth to make the gov't look good, even in the face of colossal, irrefutable, mountainous body of evidence to the contrary to the lies Mahama Ayariga wanted the Minister of Finance and all NDC political appointees to peddle to the unsuspecting public, because the truth was making their work particularly difficult.
Baba Jamal has also been heard voicing similar sentiments and that is where the popular refrain "goat is cow" statement came about.
The facts remain that there are glaring inconsistencies in the figures that does not make sense, and the fact that Dr. Bawumia worked with these same professionals could mean that, under his watch and the watch of the NPP party which was in gov't at the time, the expectation and requirement of his appointing authority was not to tele-guide the figures, command the figures into stability, artificially restrain the figures from galloping away as seen now. There was no "goat is cow" tolerance in his gov't, and an admonishment from the likes of Mahama Ayariga to lie to make the gov't look good.
The standards expected were much higher, so lets not be coy about these matters, because the fundamentals of the economy and the finances of the country is in the tanks, and there's a huge disconnect between what is the reality and what has been conjured to be the situation.
It's not to slight the BoG/GSS but to call for internal review mechanisms to engender credibility and confidence in the metrics and by extension the economy and the finances of the country.
That is a much higher standard which an NPP party brings to governance.

The dollar used to be GHC2.6. If after six months, it is trading at 3.74 by the banks, it has depreciated by 43.84. So how come the BOG is saying that is trading at 3.06 when it is actually trading at 3.74 plus? And you dont cook books? Only in Ghana

Please read "How to Lie with Statistics" a book written by Darrell Huff in 1954 presenting an introduction to statistics for the general reader. Huff was a journalist but was not a statistician.

The book is a brief, breezy, illustrated volume outlining errors when it comes to the interpretation of statistics, and how these errors may create incorrect conclusions. In the 1960s and '70s it became a standard textbook introduction to the subject of statistics for many college students. It has become one of the best-selling statistics books in history, with over one and a half million copies sold in the English-language edition.It has also been widely translated.

Themes of the book include "Correlation does not imply causation" and "Using random sampling". It also shows how statistical graphs can be used to distort reality, for example by truncating the bottom of a line or bar chart, so that differences seem larger than they are, or by representing one-dimensional quantities on a pictograph by two- or three-dimensional objects to compare their sizes, so that the reader forgets that the images do not scale the same way the quantities do. And, assuming the inflation increases truly materialized, don't you think it's effect would force the nation's official exchange rate for Ghc. currency to a dollar to rise? That is, Ghanaians would need more Ghc. currency to exchange for a dollar.
In my view, I think, even though, you have every right to defend your Department's official determination of the nation's official Exchange Rate based on data and facts available to you, your explanation does not jive with economic reality and common sense. In view of that, I am of the opinion that
it is you rather who is attempting to throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians and not Dr. Bawumia.
