Caseley-Hayford should be advised to restrict himself to matters of finance because he is making a fool of himself by straying into education. He should point out a single country in the world that the private sector is in-charge of education. Even mighty capitalist USA and the UK do not leave education solely in the hands of the private sector. He seems to be obsessed with the notion of private sector best, public sector worst.

The problems in education could not be solved by the state running away from its responsibility and turning over education to the private sector. Instead, the problems of poor and unqualified teachers, lack of good and adequate basic facilities such as school premises, books, furniture, etc should be addressed. The mess with the education ministry, particularly at the district level where there is huge corruption with teachers' appointment and failure to check that teachers not only report for duty at their various schools but also regularly attend school to teach, etc are what is required and not government washing its hands off education. Education is one of the major responsibilities of any government.

There can be partnership between government and the private sector in education as it used to be when I was growing up, especially between government and the religious bodies.

If Caseley-Hayford's suggestion is taken, only schools in the towns and cities would be adopted by the private sector and those in poor rural areas that need the most assistance would be left to rot. Again, as it is happening here in the UK some of the free schools and academies started by the private sector are only making money by paying themselves heavy salaries and bonuses.

The main problem with our education system is that the educators do not have the motivation to educate! If our teachers could be motivated to do their work well, our education system would regain the status it occupied up to the 1960s when Standard Seven Graduates were able to draft legal documents such as Labourer Agreements and tenancy agreements.
The attitudes exhibited by our teachers are reflected in our wards own attitude to education. These days when classes are supposed to start at 8.30 am, some teachers would be found at the market centers doing brisk bargaining. Little wonder the pupils would be found enjoying rice gun breakfast at Maame Tuo's chop bar two blocks away from the classroom.
General assemblies are now things of the past, because the teachers themselves do not get to school before 09.30 am. As for Spelling B's and School Quizzes, they are things of the past.
More challengingly, some pupils share text books at a ratio of 10 pupils ro 1 book,; we even hear that in some schools,pupils share exercise books! These are the 'challenges' we have to overcome to put our education back on track.
Most important of all, get rid of that sharp teeth Abrakwa; he is a disgrace to our education system!

Education is an alienated right of the child that must not toiled with. I think Education must be decentralized, that is each district assembly should hire, pay and fire teachers. That way, this rampant strikes by education workers can be checked.Teachers must be hired on contract renewable after every two years. A teachers who could not live up to expectation see their contract terminated.
Handing the education to private sector will make education beyond the reach of the poor hence breading more illiterates. This is suggestion is not well-thought.

Look at NAGRAT for example, they always complain about money but never about the quality of their services. I have lost all respect for them because their creation in the first place was egoistic and egocentric.
Similarly POTAG sat at home for three months and drew full pay while their students were like lost sheep with shepherds. And they were happy.
The least said about teachers in the basic schools and their drinking the better. And some experts say school children should be made to read at least 15minutes a day. I wonder how many of today’s basic school teachers can even read.
What the system lacks is discipline and it should be TOP-bottom.

If we all the time think that knowledge and wisdom is the preserve of the elderly and elite, it leaves much of our problems to get worse.

I wonder if he really sat down to do a holistic assessment of all the previous performances viz-a-viz the current performance before coming out with this conclusion. This leaves much to be desired.

Otherwise,where in this World are Public(gov't ) Schools run by the Private Sector ! The idea is bizarre and unheard of in human history.
The WAEC need to be investigated and brought to book. For,year in year out one could infer that they take "delight"to cancel results of many Candidates without any arrangements in place for the affected Candidates to rewrite the examination within 2-3 weeks in almost all Cases to abruptly end the educational aspirations of most of the affected Candidates, therefore, jeopardizing and endangering the welfare of these School Children. Again,no steps is taken to avert what went wrong. All what they do is just to cancel. That's it ! And no one in the Country has ever pointed out that wrong doings for the past 50 years and over.
Imagine the financial distress most parents go through to pay School Fees,only for WAEC officials just to cancelled the result without the chance to rewrite the examination within 2-3 weeks. Why ? Is time overdue the right thing is done at the WAEC .Anyway.

We have to rethink education in Ghana. Let's consider the Nagrat president's suggestion - there is too much subjects heaped on the children at the basic level. We used to have Math, English, History, Geography (home science for girls) for MSLC -Middle School Leaving Certificate). At the lower level there were about only three more subjects added to the final examinable subjects. They were science, religious studies and a Ghanaian language. We may want to revisit that.
Also, we need to add the teaching of reading to the teacher preparation curriculum. That would help a whole lot. In the USA every teacher has taken a course in reading. Also, teachers need some orientation in "differentiated instruction" so they can reach every child with different learning style or any other form of diversity.These are some of the few additions we need and we will be better off.

Delving into this exam issue, one could easily infer that the materials/syllabuses were either not fully completed or selectively treated. This rationale, is not far-fetched, because after reducing the Senior High School duration from 4 years to 3 years for political reasons, was there anything done to compensate for the loss of time, standard-bridge, and other issues related to maintaining the quality of Ghana's education at that Senior High level? What would ultimately happen is that, the teachers/tutors would rush through the syllabuses or gamble by selectively treating topics. Do you have to blame GES/Ministry of education solely for that? No, the government has to be primarily blamed for the change of the duration, without planning on how to deliver the materials, while maintaining and even improving the standard of education.
If anyone wants to know why these kids performed so poorly, they should ask the students themselves what happened? that is how we should try to address the problem. Secondly, now that this has raised concerns, WAEC should publish the appraisal report of the subject area moderators/chief examiners concerning how questions were answered, and whether it reflected the depth of knowledge expected from students, of the topics treated by teachers. This is how we can assess the educational system, to see whether it is failing us or not.
Being a Financial Analyst does not mean everything done by the private sector is without flaws. The near collapse of the global financial and economic system, was caused by the private sector. Have you forgotten about that, Mr.Hayford? The private sector is about accountability and obvious profit motive. But sometimes, profit is achieved by sacrificing quality.
Another question too, is that, did the examination moderators take into account the 1-year reduction in Senior High duration in setting their questions? We don't know? Much as we lament over these results, we must equally critique WAEC over the nature and scope of questions set. What is the primary purpose of examining students? Is it to fail them, or to help identify natural aptitudes of students, identify skill development, and help evaluate a school's overall performance? It appears, that in Ghana, the purpose of examining students, is to fail them. Otherwise, no where in the world, would this result fly.
Hayford, I want you to understand something, and that is, no where in the world, would education be left in the hands of the private sector. If the private sector, like yourself, did it, what level of success would the country achieve? Education for the 1-5% economically-advantaged Ghanaians at the expense of the 95%? What kind of society therefore are envisaging? What benchmark metrics are you also using to quantify your evaluation? These are questions I would like Casely- Hayford to answer, as a self acclaimed economist and Financial Analyst?
Now, to Ghana education Service and the Ministry of Education, including the Minister. Is the Inspectorate Division of the GES functional at all? Who are the inspectors responsible for institutional administration? I do not even want to hear anything about the so-called DS(District Supervisors) who have been attached to schools. That concept totally defeats the idea of inspection and supervision. The moment you keep/station an inspector in a school, he becomes part of the system, is corrupted, and no one recognizes his or her use and importance. Again, what level of supervision can one person do? How can he even appreciate a Mathematics or Science methodology of teaching, if he or she is not a science major or minor person? This is where GES is not on point.
Now, the worst thing Ghana's education faces, is when Professors are sent to the Ministry. Trace the performance of the ministry under Prof. Dadson (Maths-UCC), Prof. Ama Atta-Aidoo, Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi, and the current minister; and one would appreciate what I am saying. They come there with a know-it-all attitude and mentality. I respect Professors, because they have made us who were are, however, what they need to know, is that, everyone's knowledge is limited.
I think, when novices are sent to the Ministry of Education, they do better, because they do not interfere but allow the technocrats to function, while ensuring that accountability is maintained.
This is the reason for Dr. Joyce Aryee's fame, as the best Education Minister Ghana ever had since Rawling's regime. She went to Education, learnt very fast from the experts, collaborated with them, challenged them, and allowed them to improvise and change. Where did her success come from? Her management style, that engaging approach to dealing with people and
non-confrontational attitude.

Equal opportunity to me means a great education. But unfortunately, too many of us don't get the opportunity to receive great education. As a nation, for several decades, we have failed woefully in making sure that every Ghanaian child got a great education. We seriously fall far short of that.

It is not a question of private versus public education. Rather, it is a question of making sure that each child is given the choice of receiving the best education money can buy.

Whether the child goes to public school or a private school, we should make doubly sure that the child has pretty talented teachers teaching him or her.

Ultimately, the customers of education - the parents, and the community members and the educational stakeholders should get more involved in their child's education, whether the child is educated in public school, private school, or charter school.

The customers if education must insist that their children, whether in public, private, parochial or chartered schools, receive five-star education, nothing short of that is tantamount to gross neglect of responsibility, that ultimately affects the child, the parents, the community, and the nation at large.

The budget of the government is limited to run all schools.Irrespectgive of being a mission school, we had all denominations at school including Muslims.There was not a lot of query about the system
