ECOWAS Chairman John Mahama refused to shake hands with the heads of state of the three Ebola stricken nations he visited on Monday September 15, over fear of contracting the deadly Ebola virus, the BBC’s Umaru Fofana has said.

Mr Mahama who is President of Ghana visited the countries- Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea – to enable him hold discussions with his colleague heads of state on available sub-regional and international interventions to support the countries in their effort to contain and manage the Ebola outbreak.

However, the Nigerian based BBC journalist says the fear of the deadly virus compelled the Ghanaian president and his host heads of state to breach the usual protocols that accompanies presidential visits.

“Interesting that Ghanaian President and ECOWAS Chairman and his host President Ernest Bai Koroma did not shake hands during the brief visit to Sierra Leone today. Very interesting how both men wanted to do the handshake and both held back. Ebola you are TERRIBLE!,” Fofana wrote on his Facebook.

Mr Mahama used the opportunity of the visit to donate some Made-in-Ghana products to the afflicted countries.

The haemorrhagic disease has already killed more than 2,000 people in West Africa and affected twice that number.

Apart from the three worst-hit countries visited by Mahama, the other affected areas in the region include Nigeria, D R Congo and Senegal.

Ghana has tested several suspected cases, which have all proved negative.

Common sense should even tell them that, even when your relative is suffering from a communicable disease and you visit, precautions are taken and thus what the two presidents understanding each other are doing. Which by all means do not mean they cannot discuss issues and your how he is concern with their situation. Unless perhaps their god has told them ebola is airborne too.

I truly don't understand why he went to visit an ebola-ridden country? He may not shake hands but does he not know that the virus could be transmitted through saliva (when being spoken to). The risk is too high and he should have donned full protective gear if he definitely wanted to visit these people. I hope none of the heads of state and their personnel haven't contracted the disease. If yes, then Mahama needs to be quarantined on his return and fully tested for Ebola! God help us, ooooh Ghana!
