Gas, coal or nothing! all that the country needs is an entity to preside over it and not a ordinary nonentity resident like John Dramani Mahama, who is only interested to steal from the country. Mahama and his brother and most of his party(NDC)members have stolen enough money but done nothing for the country, so gradually but sure, they must leave the country to people who are ready to move it forward. Kwesi Nduom would have done 100% better than the useless and corrupt Mahama.

All that you've listed are true, but only when the right things are not done. Of course, if proper measures are not put in place almost everything becomes a danger to society: Galamsey has polluted Birim River, but Gold digging goes on; Gas is piped from Nigeria. It is good practice that is preventing leakage and pipe bursts; Dams for irrigation to produce more food, when opened cause flooding of farms and villages; etc, etc.

So Ghana, a third world nation should follow blindly. Right?
Have you gone to find out why most of the countries you mentioned still use coal? About 99% of those countries still burning coal because they can get it for a dime from their own backyards. So even though they know that it's not the safest of fuel to burn environmentally, they have no choice but to keep on using it or dump the coal unto any ignorant fool who in this day and age will buy it and that's exactly what China intends to do in the case of Ghana. Ghana doesn't even have the infrastructure in place to handle the coal in terms of transportation. A country will need a seaport dedicated to handle the coal. Have you even thought about that? I don't think so, and you're calling somebody ignorant. Take a look at yourself in the mirror and tell me what you see as a reflection. A very ignorant being who is in a position of authority who has sold his soul to the Chinese, taken his 10% cut of bribe and is trying to force the coal situation down the throats of Ghanaians whether we like it or not.
You don't fool me, Oman. You are a hired thug working on behalf of the 'thieving brigade' proponents of the coal fired power plants in Ghana. In other words, you are the black face of Chinese Imperilism and exploiitation in Ghana, masquerading on here as an expert in coal but you don't know shit. How many years do Ghanaians have to wait to solve this DUMSOR DUMSOR & rationing problems. What the country needs is a radical plan to implement the Atuabo Gas plant. Akosombo was supposed to take 3 years to complete, but was completed within 2 years. Simply stupid!!!!
Do these fools we call leaders know what they are getting Ghana into?
How about the inherent health and environmental issues associated with coal-burning power plants?
We are already overwhelmed by a lot of diseases we don't have a good grip on and now there's the possibility of exposing the next generations to a whole whack of breathing related problems.
The continent is blessed with large volumes of clean-burning gas so why can't this be harnessed and its delivery improved across the continent to power these plants instead of coal?
The world bank will be saving the next generations of Africans from a lot of health problems if they can invest in the exploration and delivery of safer fuel for these power plants.
Ghana definitely needs these plants for industrialization but we shouldn't create more problems for ourselves in our haste to achieve the goal of industrialization.
Ghanaian leaders should realize by now that China doesn't give a shit about the environmental issues they will create in Ghana as long as there's a buck to be made to their benefit. They have single-handedly polluted our rivers and streams, messed up a lot of farm lands with their illegal mining. No non-Chinese national can go to China and start prospecting illegally for minerals in China and survive to see the light of day. That person will be locked up in a dungeon prison and never be heard of or from again. But here in Ghana our corrupt leaders give them the green light to do what they want as long as the leaders are getting their cuts from the illegal activities of the Chinese.
Now they are in effect, signing the 'death warrants' or 'death certificates' of the next generations of Ghanaians by agreeing to the construction of this coal power plants in the country.
Just mind-boggling. Makes you wonder if these leaders really care about Ghanaians.
I wonder if they would ask the Chinese or the country going to build the coal power plant to also build well-equipped and well-manned hospitals in the towns and villages that will border or surround this power plant because just as sure as God made little green apples, the inhabitants of these towns, villages and beyond are going to see a surge in breathing related diseases, not to mention the 'acid rain' that is going turn the surrounding forests into man-made deserts.
Very unfortunate to have leaders with no foresight.

Oman,
I'm not going to argue with you because I don't know you and you don't know me.
One thing though, I can tell you is that I know more about coal than you think. I've worked in the power generation field for 25 plus years so I've dealt with all kinds of fuel: natgas (natural gas), bunker 'C'(heavy oil), all grades of diesel, syngas(synthetic gas)sometimes commonly referred to as 'flare gas', and of course, the controversial coal. I've fired them all in different types of steam boilers.
So as far as ignorance on this subject goes, while I wouldn't call myself an expert, I'm no slouch either. I know my subject.
"Ever heard of COAL BRIKETTES, etc?", you asked.
To answer your question, I will tell you what COAL BRIQUETTING(note the spelling) is:
Coal briquetting is one of the oldest applications of the forming process by agglomeration ...
So yeah, not only have I heard of it, I've worked with briquette coal and you still need scrubbers( do you know what these are?), ESP's(ELECTRO STATIC PRECIPITATORS) to make your flue gases coming out of your boiler stacks somehow environmentally acceptable. It doesn't make your exhaust gas completely NOx(nitogen oxides also called Nitric Oxides by some people)free.
COAL, no matter how it is dressed, is still an environmental polluter. Anybody tells you differently with any new high tech mumbo jambo, tell that person to take a hike.
So my friend, don't venture into a field you know nothing about just for the purpose of tyring to 'school' me.
I've dealt with coal in all its forms and while it's cheap if the source is nearby, you need a lot of equipment to get it into the burnable stage. You need a huge storage yard, connveyor belts, crushers and associated equipment in addition the scrubbers and the FLAKT ESP's I spoke of earlier, not to mention the health and environmental issues. So in the final analysis, you would come to realize that it's not as cheap as initially thought.
"Most often we don't read and learn about inovative global practices, but condemn issues with our abject ignorance!"... that's your quote.
Just revisit your quote above and see if it's not a case of the kettle calling the pot black...lol
At least, I've worked with product so in practical terms, you are the........
The reason I brought the Chinese up in my comments was that the so-called doctor's assertion was tied to the the report of the MoU that the VRA had signed with the Chinese for the construction of a similar plant. So athough, the Chinese wasn't mentioned in his statement, we all know the Chinese are the ones going to build the plant, unless you live under a rock.
The Chinese might be your heroes, Oman but they are definitely not mine. They manufacture the cheapest of things using the most dangerous components. Why do you think Canada and the US banned even the common childrens' toys from China. Lead, which had been banned as components of a lot of items wwas still being used by the Chinese, making a lot kids here sick. You can trust them but I won't.
I won't apologize for my words because any leader who opens his or her mouth in public without doing his or her research on the topic doesn't deserve that courtesy. They have experts at their disposal. So they have to use them to learn about the subject pretty good, especially the very controversial ones and coal-fired power plants fall under that.
Lastly, WE WOULD HAVE BUFFOONS OF LEADERS TO LEAD A BUNCH OF SIMPLETONS LIKE YOU..... BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN ABJECT IGNORANANCE OF/IN SUBJECTS YOU KNOW VERY LITTLE OR NOTHING ABOUT BUT FEEL AND THINK YOU DO.
Now you make me feel so good that I don't live in GHANA to deal with your kind and those kind of leaders on daily basis.
WHEEEEW!!! THANK GOD FOR LITTLE MERCIES!!!!
I will still speak my mind on other subjects from time to time because it's my birth right to speak on the ills that ail my country of birth.
OOPS! come to think of it, I argued my points. Sorry, bud but don't take it personally.
Have a good day!!!!!

After hearing you a couple of times this year about your myopic proposals for tackling Ghana's energy crisis, it doesn't surprise me a bit that you are hurriedly opting to add coal plants to our nation's energy production mix.
Before you go ahead to pull this off, however, it would be incumbent upon you, Dr, Kwabena Donkor, as the Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament to conduct a thorough cost benefit analysis of coal production and usage in Ghana, or better still, a thorough going cost benefit analyses of all the energy production mix of the country.
Dr. Donkor, it would be foolhardy to rush into utilizing "dirty coal", at a time when many of our citizens are suffering from respiratory ailments.

Whatever it is that make Governments have a hard ear must be stronger that their will to honestly serve the people that they have sworn to serve.
I am informed, and I understand that the 2000 MW Ketu Power Project was coming with a 350 mmscf/day (about 3.0Mtonne/year LNG) onshore modular ORV regasification.
This is far more than Ghana needs to solve her energy problem for the next 10 years or more. But the Energy Ministry and its Minister have shoved this investment at bay for 5 years just to pave the way for their contract power barges.
Power barges depending on their source of fuel would generate power at a cost 1.7 to 3.2 times the cost of the same capacity plant on land.
Power barges are ONLY emergency response when planned generation is disrupted by a force majeure or for very remote locations such as the North Sea Oil Platforms and its artificial islands or for military purposes as in Afghanistan or for mining in remote locations as in Chile.
Ghana as a developing country needs the cheapest power to encourage investment.
For your information Ghana has one power barge, the Osagyefo which has not generated a single watt since it was procured.
The 2000 MW Ketu Power Project, we are told is a 2 Billion Euro foreign direct investment with no direct implication for Ghana Debt Portfolio.
So why is the NDC dragging its feet?
Why hasn't this investment taken off?
Why is Hon. Kofi Buah playing hide and seek with this investors?
And why would the Government of the NDC and Mahama as its Leader deny the people of Ketu this wonderful opportunity?

Coal from where???
In my opinion, leaders after Nkrumah are all either visionless, or can not think wisely. It took Nkrumah just 2 years after Independence to solve the nations energy problem, and to an industrialisation of the country. How man ...

Can Dr. Kwabena Donkor confirm if a MOU has been signed already for a coal plant in the country before seeking to gauge public opinion, yes or no?
Is this guy from the Middle Ages or what? What a stupid idea. As if Ghana is not already dirty. How about Solar Energy Mr. Minister?
After hearing you a couple of times this year about your myopic proposals for tackling Ghana's energy crisis, it doesn't surprise me a bit that you are hurriedly opting to add coal plants to our nation's energy production mix ...

Read Joyonline article published August 28 th, 2014 (GhanaWeb). Dr. Kwabena Donkor attacked Solar energy.
I think all those who are talking negative about coal doesn't know what they are talking. Canada with its vast oil uses coal to power electricity please its cheapest and simple than oil.
The government should listen another way of cutting cost
Canada has vast reserves of coal in British Columbia State hence it is a competitive advantage. They are busy investing in shale gas,oil sands which they have in abundance us alternate sources of energy. What Ghana has in abu ...

As a country we have failed, these problems started when i was in secondary school in the 80s under PNDC and still ungoing. Succesive governments have failed the country.
GHANA MUST GO SOLAR
Stupid talk. Coal can only be cheaper if we produce it ourselves.
Do we have any coal mineS?
The nearest place where we can get coal from is Nigeria, but in what quantities and to what extent it is mined there, I don't know. The last time I saw coal in Ghana was in the 1970s at a railway station. In those days we use ...

This guy is stupid, Ghana should end their reliance on nigeria and go and tie it to china or other foreign country for coal. isn't it back to square 1?
Donkor's assumptions are bad and inconsistent with his logics.

Do we have coal deposits in Ghana? Let's think before we talk!
How can this be? Why does Ghana have Power problems? I Know the answer:
Ghanaians are stupid!
I just cannot believe our leaders. Why coal. We will have to import coal from China. Pollute the atmosphere. These people accept things blindly without thinking.
What an idiot. Why coal when solar is cheap and free. What kind of leaders do we have leading this country. How much did the Chinese promise you to promote this project. Very soon after the project is completed you will be lo ...

Ketu project might have been shelved because the company refused to give the clowns in government their 10% cutbacks.
Just think about it
I meant 'kickbacks' and not 'cutbacks'
This is a short sighted idea with limited benefit to Ghanaians, but maximum benefit to China. We can solve our energy problems without importing coal from China. More corruption in our government!
We all know how COAL is dirty , and all the developed countries stopped using it.
DR LET US START WITH solar energy
As for sun energy God will never take bribe before supplying us with the sun.
We do not need to transport the sun,we do not have to mine the sun.
