Not long ago, Rawlings's wife Konadu, herself from Akuse and not Asante as she wants the world to know, claimed that 'Kente' cloth was invented by the Ewes.
All that we know is that the Kente cloth was invented by Chief Adinkra of present day Ahafo district of Ghana to the Ivorian border. Adinkra's nephew and successor Abirimoro was conquered by King Opoku Ware 1 (Okatakyie)who was known to be industrial minded. Okatakyie is known to have asked the Dutch to plant the distilling of Schnapps industry in Asante.
And to bring the Kente industry to Asante, King Opoku Ware 1 moved all the inhabitants of the 37 towns, villages and hamlets of Abirimoro and planted them at what is now Bonwyire, Bamang, etc of Kwabere in Asante.
