I am at a loss. The factors quoted by Govt Communicators to have accounted for the depreciation of the cedi are still there .For instance they said Ghanaians import too much. They said the Kufuor redenomination of the cedi was the cause. These bfactors still exist so why ius the cedi gaining strenght now? The only reason is that Govt did not know what they were talking about --including DR. Wampah the BOG governor. Argentina would come to Ghana sometime in the future. This latest bond is issued at what coupon and were bought by what group of people? There are always hedge fund 'VULTURES' who eat carcasses of rotten bonds risking funds just to earn greedy returns.

IMF is surety for these vultures to say to their investors that they took the right decision for their funds during the purchase time because the coupon was way above the prevailing risks.

After the ndc have finished stealing this one too the scarcity of foreign currency will again start driving down the value of the cedi.
The underlying causes of the cedi depreciation has not been addressed yet so the reversal of our fortunes is only a temporary one

Yaw, you are right that the cedi appreciation could be cut short if the dumsor (energy crisis)continues for long. I believe Economists are giving too much credit to the IMF intervention because the bail out is yet to start.

What they have forgotten is that in the last few months, energy supply stabilized and that has contributed to businesses (economic activities) and operating consistently and perhaps increasing production (relatively). That might have also reduced demand for foreign imports and increased exports marginally (all relative to the previous dumsor days). With stable energy for the period under consideration and the Euro bond, the demand for major foreign currencies has gone down and with it the cedi appreciating.

Sadly, the stable energy is short lived as load shedding is back in full swing. It will affect economic activities negatively, demand for foreign exports will go up again whilst exports will go down. As a result, demand for foreign currencies will go and soon the cedi may go back into free fall. In other words, until Ghana resolves the energy crisis and ensures regular supply of energy for businesses and economic activity, the cedi would always be at risk of the financial markets.

Up tilll now Government haven`t shown anything that can assure Ghanaians it can manage the Economy.The NDC Government since 2009 has taken more loans than any Government in the history of this Nation,yet they are struggling.
We are waiting to see how they will manage this loan this time round.We are not yet out of the woods,so the rented press of the NDC shouldn`t jubilate so fast.
But we hope things will get better for the sake of the good people of Ghana.

To the international creditors, the country has foreign currency to pay them their interests on the previous loans without default. Is it an achievement?

To those praising Tekper: The Bonds are speculative just as the collapsing economy was also speculative. How do you borrow money from someone to stabilize your economy for long. This speculations will depend on how the bonds money are utilized. If they are used to pay salaries, fill gaps for useless ventures or as usual stolen or misappropriated, the repercussions will be worse than we have seen. When you borrow money, you invest it in income generating ventures that will enable you to recoup the capital and the interest on the loan as well as generate small income for yourself. If it is used for social flimsy propaganda things like village school buildings, village health centres, akomfem project, World Cup etc, in two three years, we cannot even pay the interest and let alone the loan. Just recollect what happened to Argentina and Greece recently, countries that had bigger economies than Ghana, will tell you the implications. Unfortunately, NDC has no track record to utilize the funds effectively. I think Ghanaians think suffering has become normal because of this silly NDC government. There are other countries accelerating development to the extent that Ghana is lagging behind. Countries like Rwanda, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia even Nigeria are doing better. Suffering is usually self imposed. I beg to differ, I have not seen any reasonable human being in the world that will jubilate because he has received a high interest loan. Only in Ghana and NDC.
