I agree with Justice Emile Short that the language used by GBA was inappropriate but at the same time, it is true that Afari Gyan's credibility was dented and the image of the Electoral Commission tarnished by what was revealed at the SC Presidential Petition hearing. If Afari Gyan could not define over-voting then why is he the Electoral Commissioner?

The GBA erred to have suggested the appointment of a new EC in advance when the existing one retires in 2015. That is against the constitution and it's sad that those who should be defending the constitution sought to undermine it. I hope they have learnt a lesson from this misguided and uncalled action.

What has his looks, which is good any way, got to do with what he said? Was it really premature for the president of GBA to ask for the man to resign when the constitution tells when he has to go?
I disagree with Ablakwa for wishing an extension for Mr Afari Gyan; nobody is indispensable and so he must go when the retiring age is due. A principled man as he is would not accept extension of tenure when his retiring age comes. It amounts to corruption. What needs to be is to review the constitution so that an EC does not stay too long in office as Gyan has.

It's clear that the NDC is nervous on hearing public cry for the removal of Kwadjo Afari-Gyan from office as EC's boss. The NDC don't give a damn about the horrible economic problem they've caused. But whatever they'll try to do, their pant have dropped exposing their bottom. Facts are facts; they're nothing they can do to hide things, just as Dr. Bawumia had earlier warned them about.

The problems that Ghanaians are going through right now stems from the fact that the EC boss helped the NDC steal the ballot that enabled clueless John "Aplanke Prez" Mahama to become president. Asiedu Nketia and Okudzeto Ablakwa also feel insecure as many of the corrupt NDC gurus when they hear GBA and the public demand a better and more trustful man to head the Electoral Commission. With all the economic mess the NDC have created, they still claim that Ghana is better than before. And it's not also surprising to not that they would ask the Bank of Ghana to cook up figures about our nation's financial/economic statement and present to the IMF. This is a gov't who wants financial bailout from the Monetary Fund. It's funny!

Even at a time, when people are crying for economic relief the NDC would select a few uninformed villagers and tell them: "look, John Mahama has done great things for Ghana" hoping that people would vote for them in 2016. It's not very surprising though, because the NDC will always tell lies and propaganda to suit their wicked plans esp. in any elections. They claim that elections are won at the polls not in court.

Ghanaians are not fools; they know all the dirty skirmishes adopted by John Mahama before, during and after the 2012 elections. These lawless bunch of people, are in the news again after vilifying and insulting our noble clergymen like Dr. Mensah Otabil and Rt-Rev. Dr. Frimpong Manso when the men of God cautioned the NDC about their "buga-buga" tactics. Now they're clenching thier fists at Lawyers Bar Association. Hmmm...we'll soon see what happens in 2016.

The call by the GBA on the President to take proactive steps in seeking a replacement for the Chair of the EC, in view of the fact that, he goes on retirement next year is right and proper. Dr. Afari Gyan has stated, and it is a matter of public record that, he's not going to preside over the next elections, and so the call by the GBA, was just to re-echo the facts as put out there by Dr. Afari Gyan, and also in keeping with the requirement of retiring at the age of 70 from Public service and most importantly, sentiments which a great majority of the Ghanaian populace, have been brooding over. Those are the facts.
Now as to whether the appointment would be from within the EC set up or from outside, is the crux of the matter. It is this paradox which the GBA sought to bring to the fore and trigger the kind of debate and discourse, that would lead to the consolidation and further entrenchment and improvement on the achievements of our Electoral Commission in entrenching the fundamental principles underlying our democracy, which is fairness, transparency, equity, credibility, honesty, integrity and respect for the august Institution, and for the rule of law.
These are matters which Ghana cannot afford to take lightly in the light of increasing discontent about the conduct of the EC in recent past elections, which fundamentally has brought Ghana to the brink and a tipping point, but for the magnanimity and forbearance and tolerance of the Ghanaian electorate. Ghana keeps pushing the envelope and it's important that, these matters are addressed in the best interest of the country, to instill the badly needed credibility in the conduct of the EC. It should be a meticulous and scrupulous process.
According to article 70 of our constitution, the President has the sole unalloyed prerogative of appointing the Chariman, Deputy Chairmen, and other members of the Electoral Commission on the advice of the Council of State.
This cannot be wavered under any circumstances, however, there's an increasing inclination towards greater transparency and ownership of this process by the various stakeholders, to ensure equity in the democratic process through greater consultation, and such calls from the IEA for example, and impliedly, from the GBA, has merit on the grounds of greater stakeholder participation in our democratic governance. Ghana needs it and our democracy requires it. It's absolutely critical moving forward, and needs to be explored to the fullest to address the seeming lack of credibility in the EC.
