It would appear that those in control of the NDC, for the time being, were bent on excluding other bona fide members of the Party who may wish to lay democratic claims to who becomes the next flag bearer of the Party by excluding them even before the mortal remains of the demised President were interred. It is also symptomatic of how political party elites in Ghana and Africa worm their way into the confidences of persons perceived as likely to ascend to power positions for purposes of eventual personal economic gain at the expense of the generality of the mass of Party members and the Nation which every President swears to serve under the Constitution

You begin to ask if the President is aware how long our people have lived with and how these birds and animals became source of food. The history is there and should have prompted the president to question the claims of sources of Ebola.
Mr. president, the virus was imported into West Africa and it will be prudent to spend your time to find ways to save our people from this menace.

President Mahama cannot be re-elected and he has one eye on what history will say about him. I have the distinct impression that much like an ostrich he has buried his head in the sand hoping that many of the problems facing his presidency will go away. This is one of the weaknesses of the presidential system that his second term may produce timidity of action which is dangerous for the rest of West Africa.

But first the story. It goes way back to the mid- 70's in the city of New York. We were newly arrived Africans and every week-end get together in my apartment to talk shop. Those were the heady days of " Africa Must Unite" with all it's great kumbayas and our abiding hopes and faith in it's great years to come.We were the young Africans ready to change the world,with Africa as our staging pad!

Once in a while we will invite our "brothers and sisters" to sit in to shoot breeze and brain storm.They believed in us and egged us on- after all if Africa moves forward in that arch of progress it would rub off on them regardless of what sociologists would want you to believe.
Have you seen the Chinese lately in the subways, public places with their swagger? I digress for a minute. I used to work with a Chinese- American at a law firm in Manhttan.One day we were reading the Daily News and saw the picture of Deng Xio Ping- he had consolidaated his power after the death of Mao and on a state visit to the US.He was wearing some goofy cowboy hat and riding in a golf cart in some corn field in Mid America.As soon as we got to the page with that picture my co-worker flipped back that page so hard he tored it up. Asked why of him,his answer " he's ugly. " Don't know where he is now now, but I can bet, ugly or not, Deng's picture is framed and hanged in Chinese homes. It's a long digression!

But back to my story. When we do meet, however, they are confronted with such current African pathologies - seen on TV, newspapers, etc- hunger,coups , famines, you name them.Those were theirs and ours harsh realities.And, they always wanted to address them.

But to us they were nothing- we lived it and survived it what could be the BIG DEAL.

Fast forward forty years later, what do we do, but "3bola y3b3 yiew" as narrated by President John Mahamah. Or, if last week's New York Times news article is true- of the frustration of a Sierra Leonian who can't clear his humanitarian gifts to fight the disease in his country- still stuck in the shipping containers at the harbor, we got long way to go in the reality domain.

We got to engage the world with all seriousness or the continent would continue to be marginalized.

Let's not do what we did then " just laughed at them " because, fately, we believed there can't be any famine in, say Ghana- what, when we could easily get on any farm and pluck away mangoes, oranges,to feed our hunger and quench away our thirts!

God bless Africa and our promise for the years to come.
