  A grumpy old man walks into a local First Baptist Church and says to the secretary, "I wanna join this damn church."
  
  The astonished woman replies, "I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you. What did you say?"
  
  "Listen up, dammit. I said I want to join this damn church!"
  
  "I'm very sorry sir, but that kind of language is not tolerated in this church." The secretary leaves her desk and goes into the pastor's study to inform him of her situation. The pastor agrees that the secretary does not have to listen to that foul language. They both return to her office and the pastor asks, "Sir, what seems to be the problem here?"
  
  "There IS no damn problem!," the man says. "Looky here, I just won $200 million bucks in the damn lottery and I want to join this damn church to get rid of some of this damn money."
  
  "I see," said the pastor. "And is this bitch giving you a hard time?"

  Dr Opuni Frimpong is absolutely spot on when he asserts that Newmont engages in responsible mining. The facts speaks for itself.
  The signatories to this article against the Rev. are fast becoming the hooligan bunch. We see them at conferences making all manner or spurious claims. Yet they can't tell us of any jobs they have created for anyone. Empty barrels

  Whilst the ngos did not supply evidence to back up their case, their argument were compelling enough for it not to be dismissed outright. You mentioned risk and mitigation which sometimes can be a form ticking event which does not reflect what's on the ground. The people of kenyase who are said to be taking newmont to court for diverting sewage into their source of drinking water will not be assured by any report which claim newmont is an ethical miner, they will prefer to believe what they see before their eyes.
  Clearly you are someone close to the mining industry and that may be the source of of your biased opinion on this matter

I read the Ghanaweb a lot and anytime there is a negative story about mining , these somebody insults those criticising the mining companies and I believe it is clear that it is the same person writing under Tango & Cash. A friend who worked in the mining company told me that the mining companies go through newspapers and Ghanaweb to attack the people who say anything negative against the mining companies and from what the so-called Tango & Cash are doing I am convinced it is true

  It is true that most, if not all, big Companies do so, especially in the USA. In addition to their formal Public Relations Department, they could also hire another external 'Spin' Agency or Lobbyists to fully take up a challenging negative situation affecting them to spin it around to the Public to buy them a positive image.
  
  It is most likely Tango and Cash is a paid hand of the Mining Company. Even the pseudonym is a possible give-away, and reminiscent of the crazy, terribly poor, plotless, violent, cookie-cutter, 1989 Stallone and Kurt Russell Movie.
  
  Anyway, it takes a massive Youth insurrection to make the necessary impact in getting the Authorities to push the Mining Company in the right direction.
  
  All around the World, natives are the biggest losers in Mining areas. No wonder many Workers' Strikes involve Mining employees battling against dangerous working environment, and Locals of these Mining areas are among most folks who constantly fight the general environmental decay brought on by the Mining.
  
  The case of the Appalachia Coal boom and the recent revelations of flagrant breach of Safety Laws by a West Virginia Coal Mining Company that resulted in the deaths of 10s of Miners are typical examples.
  
  The Mining Companies could 'bribe' the Personnel of the Law Enforcement Agencies and Policy makers, like the EPA and Congress-folks, respectively, to look away while the Mines keep perpetrating their insensitive, life-destroying acts on the poor folks. The Appalachia has long been one of the areas with the highest concentration of poverty in the USA.
  
  I personally visited there and shockingly saw the kind of poverty only seen in our part of the World, in spite of the immense riches of the Land from which Coal has long been exploited.
  
  Some of the towns did not even have their tap-water flowing anymore, when the Mines near them were closed down. One might argue, "maybe if the Mines were still opened there, the Water would flow". Well, what did the area get in return for all the Coal that was extracted from their Soil for decades with its consequent environmental degradation?
  
  We cannot always rush to welcome certain foreign investments that have the potential to lower our life-span at any time, even if they temporarily raise our standards of living.

  What is your problem. Is it the environmental problem these patriotic people are talking about which worries you or the fact that the mining companies are cheating poor people. I am aware the companies have lawyers and the resources . If indeed these people are not telling the truth about the mining companies do you think they would just fold their arms and watch them? The companies would have dragged them to court long time. I travelled out of the country for sometime and returned to find my beautiful Kenyase town and surrounding communities completely devastated. I am a living witness that what the NGOs are saying is true. I was also surprised when I read the story of the statement by Rev. Opuni in Chronicle and I knew that Newmont had tricked them. Anybody who says that these problems mentioned by the NGOs are not true is either part of the destruction or are benefiting from the destruction . I respect Rev. Opuni a lot and I know he did not mean any harm so he should be forgiven. As the statement suggested, they should have an independent investigation on the effects of the mining on poor communities. Tango & Cash, you are wrong.

  where were they when the DCE of Asutifi North have decided to used the compensation money of the accidental discharge of the cyniade money paid by Newmont to the communities to construct a lorry park and market instead of the upgrade of the health post into a hostipal status the people in the community are calling for.
  we did not know that we have NGOs in Ahafo who are so concern about the people of the area. Dear concern NGOs, please leave Newmont alone and fight for the building of the hospital with our compensation money instead of fighting Christian Council and Newmont. let me tell you this, Newmont is a responsible mining company.

  it's very strange that these NGOs could not even see just one RIGHT done by Newmont.
  
  To them all mining companies must be closed down so we can continue to use the land to grow cassava and plantain.

  if you claim to be the voice for the voiceless then please fight our DCE for us. he has vowed to used our over GHC3,200,000(THIRTY TWO BILLION old cedis) belonging to the communities to construct a lorry park and a markrt stalls but the communities are calling for the upgrade of the health post into a morden hospital. please, we need your help. you have to defened the communities at all fronts. Kenyasi both 1 & 2 and Ntotroso needs a hospital not market and lorry park.

  The following quote from the Article sums it all for my perception of the Christian Council involvement in this issue:
  
  "It is unfortunate that the delegation from the Christian Council became unfortunate victims of the Public Relations strategy and propaganda of Newmont Ahafo Mine."
  
  The Council should not have gotten involved on the invitation by the Mining Company. It should rather have volunteered to stand with the People and fully consulted with their true representatives to have all the facts needed to make fair judgment on how the Company is dealing with their concerns.
  
  The Council's decision to go in there upon the Company's invitation does not bode well for Public perception as to whose side the Council is on.
  
  Already, the Clergy in Ghana is under the wide suspicion of 'shedding tears' for the Corporate entities and not for the longterm, lasting deliverance of the poor from poverty.
  
  The Masses generally believe the Clergy start whining about poor Economic situation only when it begins to hit their Offertory. But when the various Business entities are making shady deals with our Officials to sell off our Natural Assets cheaply, and to the detriment of the people and the Nation, the 'all-knowing' Clergy remains indifferent and silent.
  
  How much does the Christian Council know about the detailed Contract Agreement that allowed Newmont or any other operating extracting Business exploit our Resources?
  
  Where was the Christian Council when Newmont spilled Cyanide to contaminate the Waters of the poor Natives? What did the Council do to ensure the People affected by the spill had adequate compensation for that environmental disaster, even if it were not a crime?
  
  Our Clergy, to many of us, is fast becoming yet another white-Color Institution only caring about the upper-class interests. When such a perception gets stuck on the Council, it would be very difficult to shake it off and would dangerously affect the trust its member Congregations have in it and the Clergy.
