Do you know that nations blessed with natural resources have less wealth than those less? This is to be blamed on bad governance and weak institutions.
This is what needs to happened in ghana for things to change.
Consult Martin Skankar of Norway, a fund manager.
A percentage of all revenues from oil, gold, cocoa etc MUST be deposited into a ghana sovereign fund and invested all over the world by the best investment brains. This money will not be touched by any government, ever! Infact, the revenues accrued from this investment will be used to fund pension, healthcare, education, infrastructural projects, roads etc in Ghana.
DON'T Invest in: What companies produce and how they are produced e.g don't invest in nuclear/chemical weapons, tobacco, companies like walmart(humanitarian clauses)
Norway has pretty much built their economy from the oil they have. Their sovereign fund is the largest national 401k in the world!

The so-called professor that tried to embellish Nkrumah's economic record needs to go back to school again. These types of socialists' arguments could deceive Ghanaians in the 50s and 60s but they cannot do so now. Nkrumah was the first leader to introduce unsustainable debt into this nation by borrowing massively and unnecessarily to finance his whims and caprices. It was a misfortune that we had such a person as president immediately after the independence. He didn't lay a realistic economic foundation for sustainable development in this country considering the amount of money that was at his disposal in those days.

Ghana had about 1bln dollars in reserve when Nkrumah took over the reins of government in this country. Can you imagine the value of one billion dollars in the early fifties? Again, after 2years of Nkrumah's rule, cocoa prices at the world market rocketed and increased fourfold. But contrary to any sound economic planning, he did not reserve any fraction of the windfall for a rainy day, as the Whiteman had done with only one fourth of the revenue he got from cocoa. Apart from the revenues of gold and the other natural resources, what did Nkrumah do with the money accrued from the astronomical cocoa prices and the big reserve he inherited that took many years to build for our future financial stability and sustainable development?

He just went on a spending spree both in Ghana and around the world, throwing his weight about and talking big. So when the cocoa prices fell close to the end of his rule, he was quick to point accusing fingers at the West, blaming them for manipulating cocoa prices to sabotage the economy of Ghana and overthrow his government. Finally, after misusing all the money mainly on useless prestigious projects, failed communist agricultural projects, and whimsical mad-rush industrialization projects that did not withstand the test of time, he also burdened the young nation with another billion dollars' debt before he was forced out of this country.

The truth is that, Kwame Nkrumah met a rich and confident country with a stable economy, and left it nearly bankrupt in few years as a result of gross mismanagement. NDC is recklessly following suit to land our nation again in HIPC.

If Ghanaian officials would wake up one morning and see the damn light and "GET RID OF THE FOLLOWINBG", the nation will have enough funds to take care of her budgetary challenges:

1) The free bungalows, utilities, vehicles, etc., for MPs and several other government officials. Let them pay for their own accommodation and vehicles—as done in the “civilized world." Who pays for the teachers, nurses, market women and the farmers?

2) Cut down on the foolish and huge "sitting allowances" paid to many DO-NOTHING officials in the country, as well as the humongous cost of rent for those shameful nation-wreckers;

3) Put STRICT monitoring mechanisms at the ministries, departments, agencies, boards, etc., to check on corrupt and frivolous spending and punish those who flout the scheme; and

4) Task the auditor general to come up with "money saving" methods for all the MDAs.

WHY USE AS MUCH AS 70—75% OF GHANA'S ANNUAL BUDGET ON SALARIES & BENEFITS for these do-nothing bureaucrats in that Mickey Flick? Which nation does that?

In short: There is too much WASTE and CORRUPTION in the country and if we don't fix them, the constant running to donor nations, the IMF & World Bank will never STOP. Negro, just manage your resources well and the rest will take care of itself.

So the questions Ghanaians need to be asking is, what is Ghana's debt obligations to the Chinese, and what have those monies been used for? It would be very interesting what comes up.
For example in 2010, the Mahama NDC gov't agreed to a $500million($464,838,149.26million dollars)dollar loan to renovate parts, emphasis on parts of Korle Bu Teaching hospital. Entities involved included Modern Gold Refinery, Chya Group of Investment and China-Africa development fund. Did the Mahama NDC gov't renovate PARTS of Korle Bu Teaching hospital for a whooping amount of $500million dollars?
It is very clear that Ghana should not be going to the IMF for a funded bailout program under any circumstances, but for the Mahama NDC gov't's strong penchant for looting the country dry.
Going forward, it is a national critical bounden duty on the part of every Ghanaian to massively, massively vote the Mahama/Amissah Arthur NDC gov't out, at the ballot box in 2016.

The mention of the CPP sends a cold shiver in the spines of most Ghanaians(the dictatorship and political persecutions).It is the unprecedented socialism started by the CPP which sowed the seed for the corruption that we are witnessing today.The state-owned institutions are the culprits.If we can minimize or uproot the corruption canker,we need to reduce the size of government,privatize and strengthen law enforcement.
The CPP has outlived its usefulness.The erroneous ideals are no more cherished in an era where the champions of socialism have taken a headlong plunge,and are admiring the achievements of the capitalist countries in disguise.Those whose brainchild socialism was have abandoned it.So why stick to it?It does not guarantee prosperity.Only the ideals of capitalism will bring about the expected socioeconomic development in Ghana.In this regard,the only political party worthy of mention is the capitalist-oriented NPP.
The socioeconomic development of Ghana should not have any bearing on either political or tribal affiliations.

If you really are who you claim to be, you will not be endorsing neoliberalism. Opening our market to neoliberals is a one way traffic, that is a Race to the Bottom. If you really are cognizant with International Economic Law, there is nothing there in Dr Nkrumah' s suggestions that does not caution the ruthless economic paradigms you are attempting to embrace. Kwasi Botchwey took us on a similar trajectory resulting in and unsurprisinglying, the loss of state assets and untold hardships. It is completely ludicrous to evince your hope in Obama as he is equally neoliberal and for that matter an advocate of the self regulating market devoid of interventionist policies to buffer the negative externalities inherent in market mechanism you are attempting to embrace. There is nothing there that Dr Nkrumah has suggested that is not of immense value. It will therefore be prudent to adopt them for the sake of sustainable development.

When you combine these bad elements coupled with naked corruption and looting of state coffers by people in power that is what you get. The economic chaos in Ghana is squarely laid in the bossom of NDC, all because they are simply incompetent and don't know how to run a nation without the corruptible "create, loot and share". If you keep stealing from the state as exist under this NDC govt.there comes a point where there is nothing left to steal. By the way Onsy, could you tell me the size of loan America owes the International Financial institutions in the world including the various individual countries? What I would no doubt agree with you would be if you had stressed that the borrowed money should be wisely and properly used to generate good e.g financial, social or environment benefits or returns. You sound like the narrowed minded opponents who just tried to stop our Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah from soliciting funds to realise projects like the Akosombo Dam, Tema Harbour, Accra-Tema Motorway, KNUST(Tech), Cape Coast and upgrading of Legon expansion of Secondary Schools in our districts and communities., feeder roads to the farming areas to boost agriculture, housing estates, the health sectors, Atomic Research, Inst. of Research, rubber, sugar, textile, garment corned beef, timber factories etc.

Some period ago many white academics would go to Africa on their sabbaticals. They would stay in their lavish hotels and never mixed with the people and the communities. They sat comfortably at the most strategic open areas of their hotels looking at the beautiful scenery through their windows to write a book about the sociology, culture, values and beliefs of the people without any good social networking, exchange or the views of the people. Unfortunately, their books were used as authorities or references in schools including universities and higher institutions as text books.
