Such a person is a chairperson of a party? Fire all the 12 union workers? Where does this man reason from? Instead of government trying to negotiate with them on who manages the accounts of the workers which is not for the government, you are talking of firing them? This man needs to reason like an adult. Let the government fire them and we shall see how many people will die at the hospitals, how many students in boarding schools will become pregnant, what food will students eat at school. Is it hard for government to agree on who manages the accounts of these workers but monitors and audits it periodically? What about moneys deducted but not deposited into any account? Modern workers are no fools and the situation of yesteryears are different from today. Let Ghana water, Electricity corps, Zoomlion and others join the strike and let us see what the government can do. Dr. Lartey, talk some sense like an experienced adult.

The money is for the workers so the government cannot arbitrarily decide on who manages it, which bank handles it and to which account such money is paid into as well as the interests it raises without the knowledge of workers. Workers must have a greater say on who manages their pension funds. Bank of Ghana workers have been given the right to decide on where their pension funds are paid and who manages it. Is what is good for the goose not good for the gander?
It was the Mahama admn which allowed such simple demands degenerate into a 12 union strike. The workers simply don't trust the government with their money.
Max, I very much know the ramifications of strike. When workers were on strike, a close relative of mine was just coming out of comma and it was tough on the family. As a former teacher in Ghana, I never appreciated when teachers went on strike and students became unsurpervised. It resulted in teenage pregnancies, drugs and alcohol abuse, students roaming in town and indulging in all sorts of vices. However, workers can also not compromise their pension money. They must think about their future. The government appointees are making matters worse by being rude to striking workers. This is like stoking the embers. People are talking about government should not pay striking workers. Some have not been paid for 22 months and were still going to work so what shall be new to them if they are not paid during the striking period? It is the country that suffers most. Did you see it on al Jazeera how Rail drivers' strike has brought Germany to a standstill? The government must rather be more responsible to regain the trust of workers, especially in the face that some deductions from workers accounts totaling over 2.5 Million Dollars have not been deposited into any account. How will you feel if you were a Ghanaian worker?

You live in America,tell the world which company you know in the world that employees decide where their pension fund is deposited or managed,come back here and let us know.
Even the 401K the employers choose the fund managers,the employers only choose the investors under the umbrella of that company and the terms of the fund varies from company to company for instance some you can borrow without the knowledge of your employer but some companies don't allow you to borrow from the fund unless you can prove you are using the money for the list of items they have listed and some you will have to pay off what you borrow before taking another loan while some you can borrow again so long as you have enough in the percentage you are quality to borrow and let me tell you that few companies that have pension funds employees cannot borrow from Texas fund.
So,again tell us which company you know that allows employees to choose a fund manager while the employer only audits as you want us to know,come again.
And for your information if you don't how strikes work, in America or the civilized world if you go on strike it is the responsibility of the Union to pay you and if the Union does not have the funds to pay you don't get paid until you get back to work,nobody pays workers on strike so tell us why you think if rich countries like America don't pay people on strike a poor country like Ghana should do so.
The reason why we have frequent strikes in Ghana is because they get paid while on strike but if they don't get paid for even a day the workers will turn against their leaders and ask them to negotiate but the government is not smart to know that.
Nobody will like to stay home not being paid just because their leaders want them to do so and even the leaders know what will happen to them if their members lose their salaries as a result of a strike.

We need to stop misleading people and stop supporting wrong doing in the name of politics.

The leadership of these workers who are always calling for strikes without votes from their members are enemies of progress and destroyers.

Secondly in many developed countries like USA public workers are banned from going on strike by law.If they dare go on strike the leaders are jailed and the whole workers fired. President Regan fired all the air traffic controllers when they went on strike

This will force labour unions to call for fewer strikes and the workers to hold their Union leaders accountable to finding better agreements in the shortest possible time. Going on strike is optional the worker agrees to lay down his tools at one's own risk, Or it should be the workers Union itself that must settle the wages for the days that they remain on strike. This is what happens in most democratic nations.

The employer should be excused from paying striking workers. Whether the strikes are legitimate or otherwise the union which has called its members to strike should be responsible for the strikers' pay. As it is today the employer loses production and still pays for no work done. Double agony. The unions have the right to call their members to strike but they must be prepared to pay the price.
