Convalescent serum treatment - also known as passive immunity - goes all the way back to the 1880's. It has successfully been used to treat diptheria, tetanus, measles and hepatitis. Ebola convalescent serum treatment was first used by Congolese doctors (in the former Zaire) in 1995. Of 8 patients treated through this method at Kikwit following an outbreak of ebola, 7 survived and one died from head injuries sustained as a result of fall from an epileptic fit. The Congolese doctors went against the advice of US scientist and doctors sent to help them.

Ghana has a top-notch research centre in the shape of the Noguchi Memorial Institute at Legon. If this institute staffed by highly-educated and qualified scientists would collaborate with the scientists of other African countries such as the Institut Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal and the South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) and others in North and East Africa, we would witnessing rapid results for any emergencies on our continent.

As of now we wait to be told what to do even though the solution was long discovered on our own continent!

They enter cell in order to use the cell's resources to make copies of themselves. Because they don't have much; they are made up of just genetic material and a protein coat (or a fatty coat in case of EV).

The Ebola virus in particular attacks the cells that line the blood vessels, called "endothelial cells".

HIV attacks the immune cells (particlularly the T-cells).

All they want is the ability to make copies of themselves. In so doing, they kill the cell (when the cell get too many copies of the virus, the cell ruptures and dies).

But often, the death of the patient is not caused by the virus DIRECTLY. In the case of AIDS, the virus weakens the immune system -- then other infectious diseases like TB take over and kill the patient.

In the case of EVD, invading the endothelial cells make the blood vessels leak blood, causing uncontrolled internal bleeding, hemorrhagic shock, and death.

Countries train their doctors differently and award different degrees. It is time we started conferring Doctor of Medicine degrees to MBChB students who have performed the necessary research projects as some countries do.

The current practice where newly inducted doctors called house officers with no experience whatsoever are left to experiment with (attend to) serious medical cases while residents, specialists and consultants are away must be put to a stop immediately. There must be at least one specialist present 24 hours in three shift rotations to supervise them. Our health system as it is presently is not the best. The situation in the countryside and rural communities is even worse.

Do not doubt the wisdom in these words.
