I agree with Justice Emile Short that the language used by GBA was inappropriate but at the same time, it is true that Afari Gyan's credibility was dented and the image of the Electoral Commission tarnished by what was revealed at the SC Presidential Petition hearing. If Afari Gyan could not define over-voting then why is he the Electoral Commissioner?

The GBA erred to have suggested the appointment of a new EC in advance when the existing one retires in 2015. That is against the constitution and it's sad that those who should be defending the constitution sought to undermine it. I hope they have learnt a lesson from this misguided and uncalled action.

Whatever embellishment is given Dr. K. Afari Gyan will not sit well with rational persons who listened or watched his performance when it mattered most. The boss of EC, where he is said to have worked for over two decades, had all the information needed and the experience, was a pitiful sight during the 2012 Presidential Election petition hearing. He could not even explain the basic rules of the commission he heads. It became clear during the course of the court sitting that the otherwise mighty and arrogant electoral boss was after all an ordinary fixture. He did not know about a lot of issues of his office, critical to conducting a national election. He was alleged to have done something unsightly, during the heat of his time in the witness box. Whatever anyone says about Dr. Afari Gyan will however, be the expression of the fellows own views. The retiring boss will have a date with his own conscience and it is not going to be pleasant.

This will never happen in any civilized democratic country. Why, is he the only educated person in the country who knows how to conduct elections? The longest years someone could stay on similar Board in the United States is at most two four year terms which is eight years. No wonder Dr. Afari-Gyan thought the Electoral Commission was his personal property and could create constituencies at will. Ghana, a country of 22 million people had a bloating 200 Parliamentarians which was increased to 230 and the number is still climbing by the fiat of Dr. Afari-Gyan. The man had overstayed his welcome and has to go.
