Being in power for six years with high commodity prices including the newly found oil, and after recklessly borrowing more than 60% of the GDP or $27bn in six years for dubious contracts and useless "oil curse" expenses, forcing the Cedi to depreciate to about 40% of its value and the administration rushing to IMF for a bail out, the NDC government is now propagating deceitfully that it is seeking to reduce Ghana's import bill on rice, sugar, tomatoes, among other items, by encouraging the production of those commodities locally.

The question Ghanaians are asking is whether the NDC government thinks the people of this country believe they are realistic and serious about food production, when they have only two years to leave office. Agriculture, and food production in particular, is a priority that should have been started and developed since 2009. But unfortunately, they said they were still looking for ways to start it next year or so. We know they can cook figures to deceive Ghanaians, but they cannot cook figures to deceive the IMF. Can they?

"Everybody knows the leakages from customs, the leakages from the bonded warehousing facilities, the leakages from transit goods, the leakages from under declaration of imports, the leakages in auctioning of confiscated imported goods and all those sort of things, Government can easily get that GHc1 billion if they looked at that,” he said.

In 1999 Customs was faced with similar Challenges. Then President Rawlings brought in this Nii Adjei Okai guy from the USA. Within less than Six Months ALL the ROT and LEAKAGES at the Customs Entry Points had been largely addressed.

Within 15 Months Customs doubled State Revenue. If you doubt me ask Dr. Duffuor. He was Governor of BOG at the time.

In order to accomplish this, Nii Adjei Okai simply refused the 'USUAL POLITICAL FAVORS' inherent in our system.

But he paid very DEARLY for this.

It is for this and ONLY this reason that he has been excluded from subsequent NDC Governments.

Ask the Prof. and Dr. Duffuor.

This is Ghana for you.

Go to the Scandinavian countries, especially Sweden. Their citizens pay higher taxes and every year they are voted the best places to live.

The government monies are now with the individuals. Ghanaians have stolen all the money in to enriching themselves, all the spending institutions in GH are all corrupted. Building glass house, buying luxurious cars, sending there children abroad etc. God will PUNISH ALL THOSE STEALING GOVERNMENT MONIES, ASSETS OF ANY KIND. With NDC it does not matter how much Ghana makes for the number of NDC folks who feed on the STATE is nummerous ranging from Asiedu, Ablakwa, Mensah Nunoo, to the Oga himself Mahama.

So for decades as Ghana struggled to balance its national budgets it was not because of due diligence but because the political and educated elite class made if fashionable and a cultural norm for abuse and misuse of government funds by party loyalists while institutions enabled some to shed their tax responsibilities to the nation
The current president inherited the evils of J.J. Rawlings and J. A. Kufour while all you hypocritical cowards looked on. When did you get over the yellow belly cowardice to now ask the current government to do something about abuses that is as common as red red in Ghana?

There are only 2 ways possible for govt. to collect taxes.The first one comes from the "formal sector" that comprises of public and private workers.The second one comes from "informal sector" where owners of such commercial activities are not well organised administratively.I can say for sure govt loses billions of cedis every year in this informal sector.Fishermen,farmers,by day workers etc are making lot of money but govt does not tax them a pesewa.In my opinion,govt must find a way to shift from targeting tax revenue from only the ports and on petroleum products.It's not only unfair but very unprofessional and unproductive.Thank you.

Even the US has less than 15 ministers and no deputy ministers. Ghana has about 86 ministers including two or three deputy ministers in one portfolio. Each minister is paid 1000s of GHC, drives 2 or more V8 cars with paid drivers and bodyguards. They draw free petrol and are paid per diem when they travel around the country with their girlfriends. These alone drain half of the nation's revenue. And then, they turn around to create dubious judgement debts which are paid without any defense from our Attorney General. I'm therefore not surprised Ghana keeps borrowing but has nothing to show.....God bless Ghana!

And then, the EC keeps creating more constituencies and districts which drain our revenue. Again, in the US no new constituencies are created though population distributions do alter boundaries of constituencies. Why can't Ghana do the same?
