my worried is that it would be difficult for any government of Ghana to successfully achieve Korean type of democracy because our leaders both npp ndc can get away with any crime. how many of our past leaders have being arrested and prosecute for crime against the state like South Korea always did? before this can happen we the ghanaians also need to change the way we thinks. some of us blindly support this our criminal leaders because they came from our area. Because GHANA is going through transformation now which would help sanitize our public lnstitutions in terms of the corruptions that be devil Ghanaian public sector in resent years. Are you trying to tell us that you will transform Ghana without all these things. I beg Ghanaian's we should wake up and realize that politicians are taking us for a ride. Bacuase don't see how Nana Addo would transform Ghana the level of South Korea without us passing through some level of difficulty as we are going through now. Did he consider the difficulty they went, before attaining this level of development. We may not be able to emulate the Asian Economic miracle without resorting to stringent Political will and tough moral or legal adherence.

The four pillars of Singaporean anti-corruption program, dating way back to the Nation's birth, is one particular aspect of that miracle.

One thing that is common among all the Countries often cited for the Asian Economic miracle is the high-handed or even dictatorial Governance under which those Economies developed. Even though Dictatorship has strongly been ruled out as the principal factor by many who simply want to credit the Economic feat in these Countries to Capitalism, the fact still remains that without the dictatorial high-handedness of the Governments in those countries their Economic Policies would not have succeeded that fast. Opposition in all those Countries was smothered. Even Trade Unions were weakened to prevent Demonstrations like those we see in Ghana today. And NGOs had to abide by certain restrictive Laws to operate in those Countries so that they would not interfere with the unfolding of the Development programs the Governments were pursuing.

Lee Kuan Yew, himself, admitted to the necessity of such curtailing of the People's rights in Singapore. Luckily, however, the redeeming fact about Lee's and his colleagues' dictatorship is that it succeeded in pulling their Nations out of Third World Poverty.

There are other important factors beside the dictatorships in those Asian Nations that helped them to succeed. We should not kid ourselves that just being a dictatorship automatically brews success.

The diverse ethnicity in those Countries, similar to ours, and its associated violent Political opposition to one another necessitated such dictatorship in some of the Countries. In Singapore, it was partly so, and partly because the Nation could see no other choice but succeed in the face of Malaya's (Malaysia) pressure to see the predominant Chinese Island City Singapore break off, and the subsequent desertion by the British.

When the Leaders of Singapore realized that they had to be on their own to survive, they adopted a policy that would entice Western, especially, American Investment, to the Country to establish Businesses that would employ Singaporeans to produce and sell back to their home Countries. Then, Singapore seriously undertook universal, high quality Education to train her Citizens to adequately meet the expertise the MNCs coming in would need.

Lee's Administration did not want to leave any chance for failure. Corruption expurgation was top on its list of priorities and they followed its program to the letter. No wonder Singapore still is among the World's leading Capital Punishment practitioners. Relatively heftier punishment was set for all offenses, as compared to the Western Democratic Nations where Capitalism are the primary identifying characteristic.

Singapore was ruled in a manner that reflected the Nation's History, Political and Cultural realism. And it was not simply borrowing Western Systems that made her succeed.

Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea all shared in the need for some authoritarianism to establish their foundation before they later modified their systems to ease up to meet UN Human Rights expectations.

Even so, the People in those Countries have come to accept most of the stringent rules that they must live by daily to sustain their Development.

Can Akufo-Addo deliver in Ghana a tightly managed anti-corruption Regime? Very doubtful. He could get all other things done right. But if nepotism, bigotry and cronyism still exist in Ghana anywhere near the levels we have almost always had, he would fail miserably.

It is funny how many Ghanaians do not consider nepotism and cronyism as Corruption. I bet my bottom dollar that in spite of all the credit that Kufuor's Administration members demand for being responsible for getting our Oil drilled, he and the EO Group would not have continue to enjoy the clear blue skies for all this long, after their deal with Kosmos, had they been in Singapore. Most of our current NDC Officials in SADA, GYEEDA, TOR, GNPC and other Institutions would also be in jail for long sentences, or even face death sentence, had they be from Singapore.

South Korea is still fraught with Corruption but the System recognizes the challenge and does much better to deal with it than we do now. She has a reputation of sending even Heads of State to jail for Corruption. Ghanaians do not seem to have that boldness and judicial aptitude to do that.

Taiwan has also shown no easy days for Corrupt Officials, or Citizenry, either. She does not allow herself to remain vulnerable to attitudes that would easily lead her into the waiting arms of China. All Citizens acknowledge that they have to be honest and firm with fellow Citizens to maintain their separation from the bigger sister next door. In order to fend off China, Taiwan had to reach out to the USA for both physical and Economic security and progress. Those would not have come any cheaply. Her Military Dictatorship had to ensure that all in Taiwan complied with its ruling at all times.

Malaysia, and South Korea did have their Military subjugation, too. The Military recognized that the only way they could catch up with Singapore, whose continued soaring was shaming Malaysia, was to impose its Political will for all programs to be fully rolled out. Time and Space here confines me to this much. But to conclude here and now, we must all acknowledge that our Economists who have been beating up on us with comparisons of Ghana with Singapore and Malaysia hardly ever seriously considered the real factors for their success and our failure.

Yet when capital investments met visionary leadership, the rest as they say is history...

I used to be very pessimistic about Ghana and Africa... But one day I sat down carefully to consider our story...

look at the Airport City Project which has taken about 15 years to bring to fruition... I daresay that the value of property at the Airport City Project is about 1 billion dollars... Fifteen years ago, it was bare land invested with feaces... If anybody had said, they could put a billion dollars there, he would be the biggest joke in town.

Today, the N1 has dramatically changed the traffic situation in Accra... The Accra Mall, the West Hills Mall... things are happening on our blind side that we need to critically look at...

Indeed, I pass by Trasaaco estates everyday on my way to work.... and these are about 400 town houses which could be located anywhere in a first class world and would still look incredibly competitive..

How are these things happening...? Capital with entrepreneurship! Period .. in governance, the comparable trait of an entrepreneur is a strong visionary leader who understands that the resources of their country can be used for transformation purposes...

I am not sure our worldview is what holds us back.. I think we lack belief and the can-do attitude...

No great feat was ever achieved by people who did not believe... no matter your strength or weakness...
Remember David in the Bible? he was small...only a shepherd boy... but he believed he could slay Goliath...
There were better built men who were all cowed into submission... But belief spurred David on...

The worldview that transforms a country is the one that believes in possibilities in spite of whatever...

Ghana will never be exactly like South Korea... After All South Korea is not exactly America... but emulating them will inspire progress

Indeed, I have been saying for almost five years that Ghana's way out of poverty is always the South Korean model or Vietnam and not the Chinese way... Because we do not have the sheer numbers that China, India, Indonesia or Brazil have..

South Korea is just about 75million people with a land space of Kumasi to the North.

Yet, they produce the number one smart phone in the world (samsung), the biggest car maker in China (Hyundai), the fifth largest petrochemical industry in the world despite not having a drop of oil. They also have the third largest industrial corporation in the World Samsung Industries which is only behind Siemens and GE...

How did they do it? You allude to dictatorships... You need strong governments and leaders not necessarily dictators to transform economies. The two should not be confused. Indeed, many dictatorships even in the Asian regions failed woefully over the years... However strong vision oriented leaders prevailed. This is a symptom of all progressive countries be it Asian, Western or Eastern... Strong vision oriented leaders not dictators...George Washington, Margaret Tatcher, Festus Mongae, were not dictators but strong leaders

Secondly, we live in a very different era of world history where knowledge transfer is far easier and more adaptable... So what South Korea used 50 years to do, we can adapt in say 10 years...

in fact, the concept of the Chaebol which accelerated South Korea's development is something that we have tried in Ghana with Zoom Lion and RLG but have suffered challenges. What you do is not abandon it but fine tune it... Indeed, as you mention, some leaders and company execs are jailed for corrupt crimes... We need a bold leader who can attempt to take these decisions... my gut feeling is that if Nana Addo is able to start but not finish yet the structure is set, another leader who inherits the vision can crack the whip easily... Remember... the boss of Samsung went to jail 20 years after he had ascended the executiveship of the company... it was not under the same leader, but the structure was set...

We need to start and fine tune as we go along...

Now.. where is your belief ? When Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand all started their drive towards the economic miracle, people said they could not be done... The human spirit which believes is unstoppable... History is laden with people who looked at the status quo and prescribed the impossible to several situations... but today, we have seen many things become so possible, they have even gone out of extinction...

You see, men have different capabilities...

Genghis Khan, the Emperor and conqueror of of Asia once said...

Can Ghana start believing in possibilities at least?

We have dropped too low on the self belief ladder...

Long before now, it has always been Singapore that many of our Economic experts, especially those on the Danquah/Busia/Dombo side of the Aisle, compared our developmental trajectory with.

So, what happened to change their view, given that they are the ones who have been feeding Akufo-Addo his Economic ideas? What do they find with South Korea that makes it the better fitting model for Ghana than Singapore or Malasia?

It is worthwhile to state here, with the strongest emphasis, that our Economists who used to berate us with the success of Singapore either conveniently or ignorantly never pinpointed the relevant factors that facilitated Singapore's success. All these Economists did was to show the disparities between Ghana and Singapore. The Economists largely compared the variance in the Symptoms, rather than the causal factors, making their diagnosis for our failure inadequate and only superficial.

I suspect that Akufo-Addo might have found that using Singapore's model would expose that misinformation or inadequate research used to blame our failure to reach Singapore's heights on Dr. Nkrumah, the lifelong arch-enemy of the Danquah/Busia/Dombo ideologues.

So the question you asked is apt why the change.
South Korea? I am a researcher know every corner of Seoul, speak a bit of Korean, eat Kimchi, lived on Jogno gu St Kings Garden over looking the Palace and will tell you,I mean all Ghanaians again that it won't work sorry.
It is not like dancing Psy's Kangam Style please. And I mean it. You've got to have your own vision for your country. Besides, the latitudes and longitudes call it the grid are different.
A reminder though to Africa as a whole and to the would be politicians I am not have to know that no country has developed "piggybacking" on another like Nana Addo sought to do.

You are right, Marcus. Our deep-seated Corruption, of which nepotism and cronyism are integral parts, would have to be effectively controlled before we can ensure any significant sustainable growth. And I seriously doubt that Akufo-Addo is the type of leader who can deliver on that.

We all saw how he coyly termed the bribing of the NPP Primary voters to justify the vice. No vibrant Opposition would sit by and let any Government get away with that. Hence, the NPP's own belligerence on Mahama's NDC, now.

We need a Leader who would be bold to confront our problems from all angles, culturally, socially, politically, and economically. No anti-corruption program would succeed without a strong Political Will that would bear upon our Law Enforcement and Judiciary and the Parliament to see effective Laws passed and executed without bias.

There are those who will accuse him of being a dictator then and now who shamelessly, however, patronize the system in China, Kuwait, Russia and other totalitarian and autocratic nation just as long as they sit here in Ghana or in the Diaspora to enjoy life from the misery of others. And what did the NPP under Kufour do in the 8years where Nana Akufo-Addo served as the Attorney General and later as the Foreign Minister?

In those 8 years and at the AG's office how many civil service corrupt did AG Akufo-Addo pursue? How many government level mismanagement prosecutions take place? But what we know for a fact is that Nana Akufo-Addo’s time at the Foreign Ministry gave us many international drug trafficking cases and travelers carrying diplomatic passports that did embarrass Ghana. So from where I sit politicians can promise to make Ghana top the USA, and every nation in the civilized world and yes there are plenty of fools ready and willing to buy. History matters because it gives us a footprint of where we've been and where we are going. And where Nana Akufo-Addo has been and done shows he is a lair just like all of them in the NPP and the NDC.

This astronomical jump was made possible by brilliant,honest,committed and foresighted leadership coupled with deep-rooted understanding of capitalism,cheap labor and trade with Japan and the United States.Unfortunately,import substitution production units did not work for them,according to a source.
Ghana's costly experiment with socialism under Dr.Nkrumah is the result of the corruption and waste in the public sector which have caused the chicken to come home to roost.
We need lopsided privatization, patched with countable number of social interventions to lift up the fallouts of the strictly competitive capitalist economic system and the vulnerable in society.A substantial public sector dominated by state-owned production units is not the panacea.

For economic transformation to occur in Ghana we need to be ready to descend or stoop low, be humble first clean our gutters and stop all insults from every quarter of society including the the useless talk radio nonesense which is not done in South Korea.
Secondly, Ghana has to find itself as a people and country be nationalistic. Which we were until after independence and also from the 80 to 2000. But all that has been lost because of useless greed, ego, and above all useless politics.
In 2000 Nana Akuffo Addo said Ghana will emulate Singapore before the NPP won elections and what did they do "Property owning democracy" in which wealth eluded 90% of Ghanaians.
This was heralded by Nana Akufo Addo at the ISSER report on the 1999 state of the nation which I attended. I debunked the idea that it could not be done and gave my reasons to sum up descipline and education it was not achieved under the NPP in 8 years till they left at best it was indiscipline of some NPP Parliamentarians that was achieved, the Amoateng drugs bust in NY, USA.
Rural electrification mostly achieved by Rawlings became load shedding and today its called DUMSOR by the same NPP that started it.
Ghana does not have Chaebols these are conglomerates in South Korea, national assets owned by private business and South Korean identity. It is not like, "hey I lost elections so I will make Ghanaians suffer, they will pay for my lost" a court case looks the best and for e
8 months the country is stampeded to a halt and devastates the economy of devaluation even further left by Akuffo Addo'sparty and government.
There is a ton of facts and attitudes that need to change before we can even begin.In the 60s Korea would have been emulating Ghana but who caused the coup.
I lived in Seoul, and did research on the won, South Korean currency affiliated to the best University in South Korea and results published for South Korea which made nonesense of the REDENOMINATION IN GHANAin 2007. This alone will tell you that Ghana cannot emulate South Korea.

I wish to conclude that it is time that Ghana faces reality of being itself by building a superstructure of a foundation first, no politics but GHANA meaning what is good for Ghanaians as a whole and not just my tribe "Y3N AKANFUO" attitude but all Ghanaians together in the same boat.
