Frequent marijuana use can have a significant negative effect on the brains of teenagers and young adults, including cognitive decline, poor attention and memory, and decreased IQ, according to psychologists discussing public health implications of marijuana legalization at the American Psychological Association's 122nd Annual Convention.

"It needs to be emphasized that regular cannabis use, which we consider once a week, is not safe and may result in addiction and neurocognitive damage, especially in youth," said Krista Lisdahl, PhD, director of the brain imaging and neuropsychology lab at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Marijuana use is increasing, according to Lisdahl, who pointed to a 2012 study showing that 6.5 percent of high school seniors reported smoking marijuana daily, up from 2.4 percent in 1993. Additionally, 31 percent of young adults (ages 18 to 25) reported using marijuana in the last month. People who have become addicted to marijuana can lose an average of six IQ points by adulthood, according to Lisdahl, referring to a 2012 longitudinal study of 1,037 participants who were followed from birth to age 38.
Brain imaging studies of regular marijuana users have shown significant changes in their brain structure, particularly among adolescents, Lisdahl said. Abnormalities in the brain's gray matter, which is associated with intelligence, have been found in 16- to 19-year-olds who increased their marijuana use in the past year, she said. These findings remained even after researchers controlled for major medical conditions, prenatal drug exposure, developmental delays and learning disabilities, she added.
"When considering legalization, policymakers need to address ways to prevent easy access to marijuana and provide additional treatment funding for adolescent and young adult users," she said. She also recommended that legislators consider regulating levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the major psychoactive chemical in marijuana, in order to reduce potential neurocognitive effects.
Some legalized forms of marijuana have higher levels of THC than other strains, said Alan Budney, PhD, of Dartmouth College. THC is responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects. Some research has shown that frequent use of high potency THC can increase risk of acute and future problems with depression, anxiety and psychosis. "Recent studies suggest that this relationship between marijuana and mental illness may be moderated by how often marijuana is used and potency of the substance," Budney said. "Unfortunately, much of what we know from earlier research is based on smoking marijuana with much lower doses of THC than are commonly used today." Current treatments for marijuana addiction among adolescents, such as brief school interventions and outpatient counseling, can be helpful but more research is needed to develop more effective strategies and interventions, he added.
Additionally, people's acceptance of legalized medical marijuana use appears to have an effect on adolescents' perception of the drug's risks, according to Bettina Friese, PhD, of the Institute for Research and Evaluation in California. She presented results from a 2013 study of 17,482 teenagers in Montana, which found marijuana use among teenagers was higher in counties where larger numbers of people voted to legalize medical marijuana in 2004. In addition, teens in counties with more votes for the legalization of medical marijuana perceived marijuana use to be less risky. The research findings suggest that a more accepting attitude toward medical marijuana may have a greater effect on marijuana use among teens than the actual number of medical marijuana licenses available, Friese said.

The health care is broken and hardly any social care to advice and support those who may be affected detrimentally by the legalisation of cannabis. Initially I didn't want to get involved in this debate but I have realized some of you are misleading the people,hence my response.

I live in one of the states that has legalized marihuana and I personally voted for the measure after reading the arguments in the blue book.

In the first place pot is used for medical treatment and at the moment 21 states have some sort of legalization to help people in medical needs so your argument that we don't have health facilities does not hold water.

Even if you have police or soldiers in every corner of the country to check the use of marihuana the people who use it will always use it but if you legalize it you have taken money away from the illegal dealers and in addition to the money that will come to the society in form of a tax you will also create jobs for people.
Just yesterday,in addition to Black Friday they had what is called Green Friday bringing the price down for more people to buy with an ounce of pot which usually is $300.00 was selling at $50.00.

At the moment the state has close to 200 million dollars in excess which they are discussing if they should give it back to tax payers while some are saying they keep it for other programs in the state.

Finally,and for your information most of the states that have fully legalized marihuana are less crime areas than the states that have not yet done it.

Casual marijuana use linked to brain abnormalities in students: Dramatic effects of small time use; more 'joints' equal more damage

Young adults who used marijuana only recreationally showed significant abnormalities in two key brain regions that are important in emotion and motivation, scientists report. The study was a collaboration between Northwestern Medicine® and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
This is the first study to show casual use of marijuana is related to major brain changes. It showed the degree of brain abnormalities in these regions is directly related to the number of joints a person smoked per week. The more joints a person smoked, the more abnormal the shape, volume and density of the brain regions.
"This study raises a strong challenge to the idea that casual marijuana use isn't associated with bad consequences," said corresponding and co-senior study author Hans Breiter, M.D. He is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a psychiatrist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
"Some of these people only used marijuana to get high once or twice a week," Breiter said. "People think a little recreational use shouldn't cause a problem, if someone is doing OK with work or school. Our data directly says this is not the case."
The study will be published April 16 in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Scientists examined the nucleus accumbens and the amygdala -- key regions for emotion and motivation, and associated with addiction -- in the brains of casual marijuana users and non-users. Researchers analyzed three measures: volume, shape and density of grey matter (i.e., where most cells are located in brain tissue) to obtain a comprehensive view of how each region was affected.
Both these regions in recreational pot users were abnormally altered for at least two of these structural measures. The degree of those alterations was directly related to how much marijuana the subjects used.
Of particular note, the nucleus acccumbens was abnormally large, and its alteration in size, shape and density was directly related to how many joints an individual smoked.
"One unique strength of this study is that we looked at the nucleus accumbens in three different ways to get a detailed and consistent picture of the problem," said lead author Jodi Gilman, a researcher in the Massachusetts General Center for Addiction Medicine and an instructor in psychology at Harvard Medical School. "It allows a more nuanced picture of the results."
Examining the three different measures also was important because no single measure is the gold standard. Some abnormalities may be more detectable using one type of neuroimaging analysis method than another. Breiter said the three measures provide a multidimensional view when integrated together for evaluating the effects of marijuana on the brain.
"These are core, fundamental structures of the brain," said co-senior study author Anne Blood, director of the Mood and Motor Control Laboratory at Massachusetts General and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "They form the basis for how you assess positive and negative features about things in the environment and make decisions about them."
Through different methods of neuroimaging, scientists examined the brains of young adults, ages 18 to 25, from Boston-area colleges; 20 who smoked marijuana and 20 who didn't. Each group had nine males and 11 females. The users underwent a psychiatric interview to confirm they were not dependent on marijuana. They did not meet criteria for abuse of any other illegal drugs during their lifetime.
The changes in brain structures indicate the marijuana users' brains are adapting to low-level exposure to marijuana, the scientists said.
The study results fit with animal studies that show when rats are given tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) their brains rewire and form many new connections. THC is the mind-altering ingredient found in marijuana.
"It may be that we're seeing a type of drug learning in the brain," Gilman said. "We think when people are in the process of becoming addicted, their brains form these new connections."
In animals, these new connections indicate the brain is adapting to the unnatural level of reward and stimulation from marijuana. These connections make other natural rewards less satisfying.
"Drugs of abuse can cause more dopamine release than natural rewards like food, sex and social interaction," Gilman said. "In those you also get a burst of dopamine but not as much as in many drugs of abuse. That is why drugs take on so much salience, and everything else loses its importance."
The brain changes suggest that structural changes to the brain are an important early result of casual drug use, Breiter said. "Further work, including longitudinal studies, is needed to determine if these findings can be linked to animal studies showing marijuana can be a gateway drug for stronger substances," he noted.
Because the study was retrospective, researchers did not know the THC content of the marijuana, which can range from 5 to 9 percent or even higher in the currently available drug. The THC content is much higher today than the marijuana during the 1960s and 1970s, which was often about 1 to 3 percent, Gilman said.
Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the U.S. with an estimated 15.2 million users, the study reports, based on the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2008. The drug's use is increasing among adolescents and young adults, partially due to society's changing beliefs about cannabis use and its legal status.
A recent Northwestern study showed chronic use of marijuana was linked to brain abnormalities. "With the findings of these two papers," Breiter said, "I've developed a severe worry about whether we should be allowing anybody under age 30 to use pot unless they have a terminal illness and need it for pain."

Frequent and/or long-term marijuana use may significantly increase a man’s risk of developing the most aggressive type of testicular cancer, according to a study led by the Public Health Sciences Division’s Drs. Janet Daling and Stephen Schwartz. Their findings appeared online Feb. 9 in the journal Cancer.

The researchers found that being a marijuana smoker at the time of diagnosis was associated with a 70 percent increased risk of testicular cancer. The risk was particularly elevated (about twice that of those who never smoked marijuana) for those who used marijuana at least weekly and/or who had long-term exposure to the substance beginning in adolescence.

The results also suggested that the association with marijuana use might be limited to nonseminoma, a fast-growing testicular malignancy that tends to strike early, between ages 20 and 35, and accounts for about 40 percent of all testicular-cancer cases.

Since the 1950s, the incidence of the two main cellular subtypes of testicular cancer, nonseminoma and seminoma—the more common, slower growing kind that strikes men in their 30s and 40s—has increased by 3 percent to 6 percent per year in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. During the same time period, marijuana use in North America, Europe and Australia has risen accordingly, which is one of several factors that led the researchers to hypothesize a potential association.

“Our study is not the first to suggest that some aspect of a man’s lifestyle or environment is a risk factor for testicular cancer, but it is the first that has looked at marijuana use,” said Schwartz, study co-author and epidemiologist.

Established risk factors for testicular cancer include a family history of the disease, undescended testes and abnormal testicular development. The disease is thought to begin in the womb, when some fetal germ cells (those that eventually make sperm in adulthood) fail to develop properly and become vulnerable to malignancy. Later, during adolescence and adulthood, it is thought that exposure to male sex hormones coaxes these cells to become cancerous.

“Just as the changing hormonal environment of adolescence and adulthood can trigger undifferentiated fetal germ cells to become cancerous, it has been suggested that puberty is a ‘window of opportunity’ during which lifestyle or environmental factors also can increase the risk of testicular cancer,” said Daling, senior author and epidemiologist. “This is consistent with the study’s findings that the elevated risk of nonseminoma-type testicular cancer in particular was associated with marijuana use prior to age 18.”

Chronic marijuana exposure has multiple adverse effects on the endocrine and reproductive systems, primarily decreased sperm quality. Other possible effects include decreased testosterone and male impotency. Because male infertility and poor semen quality also have been linked to an increased risk of testicular cancer, this further reinforced the researchers’ hypothesis that marijuana use may be a risk factor for the disease.

Daling first got the idea to explore a possible association between marijuana use and testicular cancer about eight years ago, when she attended a talk by a physician at the University of Washington who presented findings that only two organs, the brain and the testes, had receptors for tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive component of marijuana. Since then, a number of other sites have been found to contain THC receptors, including the heart, uterus, spleen and immune-system cells.

The male reproductive system also naturally produces a cannabinoid-like chemical that is thought to have a protective effect against cancer. The authors speculate that marijuana use may disrupt this anti-tumor effect, which could be another explanation for the possible link between marijuana and increased risk of testicular cancer.

The researchers emphasize that their results are not definitive, but rather open a door to more research questions.

The National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and funds from the Hutchinson Center supported this research, which also involved researchers from the University of Washington, Vanderbilt University and Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation.

As a psychotherapist with a specialization in teenager drug addiction, and practicing in Arlington, VA, l can professional state that legalizing marijuana would cost more hardship on Ghanaians than what we are experiencing now. In countries where "Mary-Jane" (Marijuana) is legalized, the government have better social services for the people. Do we have the same services for our people in Ghana? Why do we always cite the advance countries to support our myopic arguments? Why don't we use countries like Somalia, and Gambia? It may be true that marijuana has some medicinal content just like most of the plants we use in our daily lives, however, it must be stated clear that the medicinal content of "WEED" is always extracted by the pharmaceutical companies to manufacture lab-tested safe medication for our consumption. Legalizing "WEED" would mean that any junkie can overdose themselves to death. Those calling for the legalization of Weed should first consider the health cost of the smoking of Cigarette. I can tell you that most of my clients here in VA sincerely regret ever tasting weed and wish there is a magic wand to reverse the damage it is causing them despite the government medical assistance they receive.

Marijuana use may result in heart-related complications in young and middle-aged adults. Nearly 2 percent of the health complications from marijuana use reported were cardiovascular related. A quarter of these complications resulted in death, according to a study. Surveillance of marijuana-related reports of cardiovascular disorders should continue and more research needs to look at how marijuana use might trigger cardiovascular events, researchers say.

Marijuana use may result in cardiovascular-related complications -- even death -- among young and middle-aged adults, according to a French study reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

"In prior research, we identified several remarkable cases of cardiovascular complications as the reasons for hospital admission of young marijuana users," said Émilie Jouanjus, Pharm.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study and a medical faculty member at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse in Toulouse, France. "This unexpected finding deserved to be further analyzed, especially given that the medicinal use of marijuana has become more prevalent and some governments are legalizing its use."
Researchers analyzed serious cardiovascular-related complications following marijuana use that was reported to the French Addictovigilance Network in 2006-10. They identified 35 cases of cardiovascular and vascular conditions related to the heart, brain and limbs.
Among their findings:
Most of the patients were male, average age 34.3 years.
Nearly 2 percent (35 of the 1,979) marijuana-related complications were cardiovascular complications.
Of the 35 cases, 22 were heart-related, including 20 heart attacks; 10 were peripheral with diseases related to arteries in the limbs; and three were related to the brain's arteries.
The percentage of reported cardiovascular complications more than tripled from 2006 to 2010.
Nine patients, or 25.6 percent, died.
Researchers note that marijuana use and any resulting health complications are likely underreported. There are 1.2 million regular users in France, and thus potentially a large amount of complications that are not detected by the French Addictovigilance System.
"The general public thinks marijuana is harmless, but information revealing the potential health dangers of marijuana use needs to be disseminated to the public, policymakers and healthcare providers," Jouanjus said.
People with pre-existing cardiovascular weaknesses appear to be more prone to the harmful effects of marijuana.
"There is now compelling evidence on the growing risk of marijuana-associated adverse cardiovascular effects, especially in young people," Jouanjus said. "It is therefore important that doctors, including cardiologists, be aware of this, and consider marijuana use as one of the potential causes in patients with cardiovascular disorders."
Surveillance of marijuana-related reports of cardiovascular disorders should continue and more research needs to look at how marijuana use might trigger cardiovascular events, she said.

Recreational marijuana use has been linked to an increased risk of testicular cancer, particularly the more dangerous non-seminoma and mixed germ cell tumor types, according to a new study.
Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California found that young men who used marijuana in the past were at a doubled risk of having one of these two types of testicular cancer. These types of testicular cancer are known to have worse prognoses than some other kinds.
"We do not know what marijuana triggers in the testis that may lead to carcinogenesis, although we speculate that it may be acting through the endocannabinoid system -- the cellular network that responds to the active ingredient in marijuana -- since this system has been shown to be important in the formation of sperm," study researcher Victoria Cortessis, MSPH, Ph.D., an assistant professor of preventive medicine at USC, said in a statement.
The CANCER study was conducted in 163 young men who were diagnosed with the testicular germ cell tumor type of testicular cancer between December 1986 and April 1991. The researchers compared their drug use with 292 similar men, who were healthy.

Please could you give a brief introduction to testicular cancer?

This is a set of malignancies that arise in germ cells of the testicles, the specialized cells that produce sperm. Taken together, testicular cancers are the most common form of malignancy that occurs in young men (approximately 15 to 35 years of age).
Fortunately, most men who are diagnosed with this cancer respond very well to therapy and are eventually cured. However, they are so young that they must live for decades with any so-called late effects such as increased risks of an additional testicular cancer, other cancers, heart disease, infertility, and sexual problems.
Researchers are therefore very interested in finding environmental causes that may provide routes to preventing testicular cancer. This was the objective of Dr. Leslie Bernstein, who designed and ran our study, when she decided to investigate recreational drugs as possible causes of testicular cancer.

What factors were previously known to increase the risk of testicular cancer?
--------------------------------------

It has long been know that a personal history of congenitally undescended testicles (cryptorchidism) is associated with approximating four-fold increased risk, while family history of testicular cancer can be associated with even higher risk if the affected relative is a brother.
More recently, several genetic variants have been identified that are also related to risk, and the biological mechanism whereby these work is now being investigated.
Some environmental risk factors, such as exposure to organochloride pesticides, have also been suggested by recent research, and this is an area of active study.

Your research showed that recreational marijuana use increased the risk of developing testicular cancer. Please could you explain how you define “recreational marijuana use”?

We are referring to use of marijuana for reasons other than medical care.

Did your research show that recreational marijuana use increased the risk of all types of testicular cancer, or only some?
--------------------------------------

Detailed analysis of the data indicated that almost all of the elevated risk pertained to non-seminoma, a form of testicular cancer that tends to occur at earlier ages and to require more aggressive treatment.

How did you demonstrate this relationship?
--------------------------------------

The study used the well-described case-control approach to investigating risk factors among human participants. Men diagnosed with testicular cancer in Los Angeles County were invited to participate, and for those who accepted, unaffected men of similar age and racial/ethnic heritage were asked to participate as unaffected controls. These control men provide reference information allowing us to learn whether the men who developed testicular cancer had been exposed more often (or less often) to each of the various factors that the study investigated. Information about history of exposure was provided by each man during an in-person interview.
We analyzed reported histories of using various recreational drugs in relation to testis cancer risk, accounting for known risk factors such as age, history of cryptorchidism and family history. There was no obvious difference in the frequency with which men with testicular cancer and the unaffected controls reported using most drugs. However, those with testis cancer more frequently reported having used marijuana.

Did your research show that the relationship was a causative one, i.e. can marijuana use be said to cause testicular cancer, or could this be a coincidental association?
--------------------------------------

I would hesitate to call the association causal at this point. What we can say with confidence is that all three studies that have addressed this question have found the same very specific result: a reported history of using marijuana is associated with elevated risk of non-seminoma testicular cancer.
These findings are unlikely to be due to chance, given the statistical properties of the estimates from each study, and the consistency of the results between studies. However, the possibility remains that men who use marijuana are strongly inclined to have some risk factor that has not yet been discovered, and that was not measured in any of these studies. However, if this were the case, the effect of this hypothetical risk factor would have to be even stronger than the effect of marijuana, and no such factor has been postulated.

By what mechanism do you think recreational marijuana use could cause testicular cancer?
--------------------------------------

Two scenarios seem plausible based on what is known about physiologic effects of marijuana and testicular biology.
First, marijuana smoke may interfere with hormonal signaling that is required for proper development and function of the testicle. In animals studied in controlled experiments, both marijuana smoke and the marijuana constituent ?9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (called “THC”) have been shown to suppress androgen levels in male mice. Similarly in humans, men who smoke marijuana have been found to have lower levels of androgens circulating in their blood. So perhaps elevated risk of seminoma occurs as a result of marijuana’s suppression of androgens below levels required by the testicles for optimal health.

A second possibility is that THC from marijuana specifically interferes with other biological processes, which are carried out by the so-called endocannabinoid system. This is a network of signaling molecules produced by the body that bind the same cellular receptors as THC. These receptors are present in testicular tissue, and it has been suggested that THC from marijuana may bind these receptors, keeping them from carrying out their usual function and thereby damaging testicles in a way that predisposes to non-seminoma. It was this possibility that motivated Dr. Janet Daling, a member of the research team that first reported the marijuana-nonseminoma association, to investigate marijuana use as a possible contributor to testicular cancer risk.

Did your research show a relationship between any other drugs and an increased risk of testicular cancer?
--------------------------------------

No. However, we did see an association between reported use of cocaine and reduced risk of all testicular cancer (not just non-seminoma). Cocaine appears to destroy testicular germ cells in both humans and laboratory animals, so we suspect that any protective effect of cocaine results from loss of germ cells, which would be expected to damage or destroy a man’s fertilty.

What impact do you think your research will have?
--------------------------------------

Since this is the third study to reveal the same specific association between marijuana use and nonsemionoma risk, I hope that the scientific community will now investigate possible mechanisms so that we can draw more definitive causal inferences. In the meanwhile, I feel that young men deserve to be aware of these findings so that they can make informed decisions about using marijuana.

How do you think the future of research into testicular cancer will develop?
--------------------------------------

I anticipate that some scientist will focus their attention on biological mechanisms whereby both marijuana and recently identified genetic variants operate to influence risk.

Do you have any plans for further research into this area?
--------------------------------------

I am interested in studying marijuana use in more detail, to learn whether there are particular ages at which a man’s use of marijuana is particularly harmful, and to understand the biological processes through which risk is influenced. This information should allow us to begin formulating more specific interventions.

Victoria Cortessis, PhD, is a faculty member in the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and departments of Preventive Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
She directs a program of research using methods of epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology to understand causes of congenital and malignant conditions of the urological system.
Recent results from her research group include identification of genetic determinants of cryptorchidism, testicular cancer and bladder cancer risk, as well as learning that women who complete at least one pregnancy or use estrogen plus progestin in the perimenopausal period experience reduced bladder cancer risk.

The picture doesn't look good for us to legalize "WEE" in Ghana.Not now and ofcourse not in 100 years to come. Here they are abusing the substance when it is illegal..how much more when it is legalize? Coming from the hood, I know first-hand how this substance has turn fine smart brains into dull, weak brains. I have friends here in the west who smoke weed but, you would hardly notice . They smoke for good reasons. The findings by the psychiatrist is more than 100% accurate Bear in mind that, the findings doe’s not even include the number of unreported cases.
