Ghana is not a socialist country yet majority of citizens expect the government to educate, employ, feed, provide healthcare free and at the same time build roads and other infrastructures. Citizens want subsidized petrol, electricity and water. Where does the money come from? In capitalist world governments subsidize utilities for the vulnerable members but others pay. In Ghana 70% of electricity use is residential and only 30% industrial use. Ther is no prudent use of electricity. Removal of subsidies and privatization of the utilities will bring competition, improvement of services, respect of money spent on utilities. Also the private companies will pay tax to the government to use for infrastructure improvement. If there is no incentive in generation and distribution of power and other utilities who will invest in them? It is better to have power available for those who can afford and use it wisely than trying to give it out for almost nothing.

Amexco, if Ghana is not a socialist country, then what you want to say is that it is a capitalist country.
The basic things that I know about capitalist countries or societies is that, they at least have welfare programs for the most vulnerable and deprived section of their societies. This is so because a capitalist society is a dog eat dog society.
In Ghana, there are no such welfare programs and even if there was, no govt in any under-developed country in Africa or elsewhere, for that matter, will be able to support it because the poverty levels are so massively overwhelming.
A regular capitalist is a person who exploits society to make a lot of money - in fact, as much as he/she can make. This is on the presumption that the economy of that capitalist society is sufficiently buoyant and viable to make worthwhile profits that can sustain the services and the production of a capitalist company and the limitless greed of the capitalist owner.
I do not particularly have anything against the private sector but what annoys me is that, if any individual or company wishes to do business in lets say, the telecommunications sector, why dont they just go straight on ahead and build their own infrastructure and quietly do their business? The same for housing, water, education, health, energy, sports and so on and so forth. Nobody will raise a finger of protest against them as is evident in many instances in the education, health, housing and trading sectors. However we will protest when and if they get into all sorts of corrupt arrangements with our corrupt leaders to cheaply sell-off state property for a dime and share the booty behind our backs.
In Ghana the economy is not viable nor buoyant. This leaves the door open for the other option of foreign investors to come in and buy us out of our resources, opportunities and the limited profits that a weak economy can create. Now this takes us back exactly to where we do not want to be. That is, to offer our economy, lock stock and barrel, in the hands of foreigners and ultimately, to be controlled by them.
Capitalists have no obligation to consider the welfare or well-being of other members of a given society and as a matter of fact, they dont.
Now mark my words, any under-developed economy/country that opts for a capitalist style of development will never grow substantially. The essentially corrupt and unfriendly forces innate in capitalism inhibit intrinsic social growth and development. You may have a few pockets of wealth here and there that is protected and stimulated by govt, by private military security
personnel and ten-foot walls secured with electrified barbed-wire against the poverty-induced wrath of the local people and thats about it.
The massive oil revenues of countries like Nigeria with a population of around 180 million and a total GDP hovering around $1 trillion; Equatorial Guinea with a population of about half a million and a total GDP hovering around $20 billion and Angola with a population of about 24 million and an estimated total GDP of about $180 billion, are classic examples of why no developing country should ever dare attempt to copy the debilitating capitalist model of development.
The unspeakable levels of terminal and unrestrained poverty and criminally infernal conditions of
under-development that have been induced by the capitalist option in under-developed former colonies of truly capitalist countries, could make the many horrifying tales of hell, as we are told, seem a welcome relief.
As for Amexo's misleading statistics about waste and all that, the less said about it the better. But his pro-capitalist arguments make him actually sound like a little boy who has been given the opportunity to take a swig at his fathers best wine and who subsequently describes the experience of inebriation as the closest thing to heaven.
Listen to Amexo. "In Ghana 70% of electricity use is residential and only 30% industrial use. There is no prudent use of electricity." Now can such a person be described as normal? Even if it is the case that only 30% of electricity is used by the industrial sector, doesnt it simply expose the fact that there is no demand from that sector? And if there is no further demand of electricity from the industrial sector, doesnt that again mean that, that sector is small and therefore Ghanaians are not prone to, encouraged or inclined towards private enterprise for whatever reasons? And if that is the case, why should such a diabolical anti-African system be imposed on the people?
Now Amexo, let me skip some of the finer arguments and go straight to the point to cut a long story short. The only successful capitalist countries in the world that have been able to reach that point of 'success', are not surprisingly, countries that engaged in the heinous and abhorrent economic activities of the slave trade, colonialism and the massive looting of the resources of the countries and people they tyrannized for several hundred years. Period.
So Amexo, go and enslave millions of other people and use them like animals to do your dirty work for you without any liberties or human rights, colonize them and loot as much of their resources as you can carry away and I guarantee you, you will have a nice and cozy little capitalist state to live in.

It seems to me that you yourself are the joke.
State enterprises dont work in Ghana because it is the capitalist oriented politicians who do not make them work by starving them of proper expertise and funds so that they can cheaply sell them off to their cronies and partners in crime. Isnt this what privatization and capitalism is about?
Now get it straight, with the kind of corrupt capitalist oriented govts that we have, no private enterprise or company is safe from their shenanigans.
A company is a company, whether it is state owned or privately owned. In any of these instances, if the management is incompetent, the company will be run aground. So you guys will have to stop these silly privatization noises that have been pumped into your empty heads by those foreigners who stand to gain most from the privatization of state owned companies and enterprises.
If you think the ECG is not performing well, go and set up your own electricity generating and distribution company and compete with them. Isnt this what all sensible and serious capitalists do?

Problem with generation is not same as distribution. Distribution is basically to toughest part as you will need to deal with so many illegal connections as well as payments. Luckily the prepaid meters are here to stay yet even that, people, indisciplined as the country is still pass by prepaid meters. As a student way back in UK, 1975, we were slotting for prepaid electricity and even that, we could sometimes play tricks with the slotting machines. At the time electricity was privatized. We had the SouthWestern Electricity, we had South Eastern and even LONDON city had its own electricity generation and distribution way different from South or Northern England. Let us be practical and like a lot of the comments it is about time we realize that Government on its own cannot do it all. It is impossible in the capitalist democractive world we have chosen to on our pilgrimage. Let us help MAHAMA achieve what is best cause our future lies in our hands not in Mahama's. We must help him succeed be it NDC or CPP or PPP or NPP. The world for us has changed so very much from what it used to be. There are no more freebies. Otherwise our future as a nation is doomed. Remember as far back as 1975 we were slotting for Electricity in UK. 34 years on we in Africa, most having schooled and lived in the Western world still want freebies. OMG

Those who do not want change are always doomed forever. There are those who are always backward thinkers and never prepared for anything new they rather stay with the old methods and continue to get the old results. You never expect govt to be supplier of every every service electric govt, water govt, health govt, transport govt, airlines govt, toilets govt wow just sit back and think about it these are the exact route we have taken for donkey years and ask yourself has it helped us?We are only good at criticizing regime to regime but that has not yielded any positive results because all those come and go govts never muster the courage to tell the masses the truth but instead will continue with their hollow promises just to get cheap votes just to come into power to chop chop.Any govt promises will continue to be hollow or just quick fixes to last the short term but never long lasting for future generations to enjoy.Kudos in this instance to JJ he was was the President who mustered the courage to privatize Ghana's Telephony initially there was the usual outcry from most masses but he went ahead and did it anyway because he had the conviction that it benefit every tom dick and today lo and behold we have competition all over the place with several mobile companies joining in the race every now and then so now who is benefiting?the answer is not only JJ but every body and what happens with competition improvement in services or you are out of business. Now lets go to radio and tv stations for centuries there was the monopoly GBC so any soldier could just into GBC because it was govt owned and just announce a take over of govt now look at the situation and be the judge. What is sad about our water and electric situation or the dumsor saga is not something new to any Ghanaian it has been with us from regime to regime but just to quiet the masses they just bandage the problem and tell them the problem is solved or they just continue tell them down town stories with various dates when the dumsor will end forever but they know it is a lie they know it is not feasible for govt to be the supplier of everything. They have travelled extensively and know the right thing but when they get home although they intend to do right thing they later join the usual bandwagon to lie or it becomes lying galore because the canker on our hands is either you join that galore or you are out. Please it is about time we tell our folks the truth which everybody knows it hurts but that our only panacea for long term fixes and that is privatization.THe govt only sits back to regulate by making the rules and also to see that they rules are followed just as is with telephony and radio stations or you are sanctioned, fined or jailed.I do not know how many times I have changed my water and electricity suppliers because there are several I have the luxury to shop around for better customer service, pricing and better quality service and because of competition there improving everyday just as the quality is improving can you believe it the price is even getting cheaper everyday because they continue to be innovative with science to produce quality things but even cheaper.Just to go to the US,UK,Canada etc mobile phone service is getting high tech each day but getting cheaper each day.So the time is now don't let chop chop people scare you about privatization if we really want long lasting solutions to our problems because we are tired of the promises of waiting gas from Nigeria, the this is broken, the that is coming soon etc.they are all hollow. What I even thank Ghanaians for is their patience and tolerance for dealing with these none sense all this long because those at the top really do not care because they have their bore holes to sell the water back to you and they have their generators that kicks in when then dumsor comes up so please wake up my people do not be fooled any more enough is enough.Thansk.

Water and what are basic? Ghana has the largest artificial lake in the world. A lot of water but it takes money to purify the water, store and distribute. Who should pay for making the water clean and the distribute? Without privatization there will not be the opportunity for us to use current forum for sharing ideas. With privatization of Ghana Telcom, other Telcom companies came in to make money. When you allow others to make money, that money can be taxed and the rest used to provide better services. One can use smartphone in most villages in Ghana, chat or text with Whatsapp, call all over the world with viber and tango and the rest. Government cannot give such services. Government is very inefficient everywhere in the world that has big government. Let your fellow Ghanaians make some money. How many people have been crying that merchant bank was sold to a Ghanaian? If you don't let your fellow Ghanaians buy the government assets, foreigners will buy them and repatriate the profits. Dangote got help from Nigerian government but he has created a lot of job opportunities for Nigerians and other Africans. He is competing with the foreign companies. China helps private companies to get businesses outside, US helps private companies to get businesses overseas.what is wrong with government helping private companies in Ghana?
