It defeats the purpose of sending miscreants and minor offenders to prison. This should not simply go away but must be thoroughly investigated and reforms recommended and instituted to prevent any future re-occurence.

Someone has to speak for the ever-ignored prisoners, and he did, so whether he himself was a victim or not is irrelevant. You don't have to suffer yourself in order to speak for sufferers.

The important thing is that he brought into focus a grossly-neglected sector in governance.

We must build more prisons and segregate hardened criminals like state-coffer raiders, repeat drunk-drivers, wife beaters, murderers and armed robbers from innocuous offenders like wee smokers and cassava thieves.

Ghana needs holding facilities that have rooms for a total of at least 1 million prisoners because the crime industry is growing really fast, as successive Governments do not seem to be interested in the wholistic strategies that can help stem the canker.

Rev. Benjilo should know that he now professes to be a man of God. He served in both Nsawam and Ho prisons but none of these happened. Our prisons are overcrowded, I agree but we have not yet reached the point where corpses and living persons are placed in the same place. Our prisons also have a very low mortality rate of prisoners. so where is he getting his facts from? Yes, ocassionally drugs enter the prison but officers make all efforts to keep them out. Where an officer connives with a prisoner to brinbg in drugs the officer is handed over to police and prosecuted. I know this because I know at least two ex-prison officers who were jailed 10 years each for drugs in prison. But come to think of it, what gadgets do officers have at prison gates to check prisoners and visitos entering? Virtually nothing but their bare hands to do limited body searches with respect for decency as demanded by prison rules and regulations. And if you have drug-smuggling experts like Rev. Benjilo in prison, surely they can always outwit the unsuspecting, poorly trained and poorly equipped prison officer, especially that they even outwit advanced security systems in even well established airports. Finally, is that the way Rev. Benjilo will pay us prisons officers back after all the care we afforded him in prison where he pretended to be going blind in order for government to grant him amnesty? Since he left the prison, he has suddenly regained his full sight without any treatment. Was he being sincere then when he pretended to be going blind in prison?
