When there is an EXIGENCY, a situation that requires an emergency attention, then A Media House will decide to Publish without Verification so as to reduce or avert the Potential for Damage.

But there are SERIOUS ISSUES of CREDIBILITY at play when the reasons for not verifying the story are as follows:

"The DCE could not be reached for his side of the story because his phone was off.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that he was addressing an oil and gas forum when the paper wanted to reach him.

Attempts to reach the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah, were also not successful."

For all you know, there may be some TRUTH to the Story. But this is not an Emergency. I don't think all of what the DCE is accused of Happened Overnight and waiting a few Hours or even Days to hear from the DCE or the Minister will not Change the Story if it were TRUE.

I think the DAILY GUIDE took the Story and Ran with it not because it seriously believed it to be the WHOLE Truth and Nothing But the Truth but because the story has the PROPENSITY to EMBARRASS Govt.

If the Editors at the Daily Guide were SMART, they would realize that the OPPORTUNITY to embarrass Govt., if that is their MOTIVATION, would NOT BE LOST simply by a day's delay in order to hear from the accused because that ADDS to the CREDIBILITY of the Story.

For a PAPER, whose Publisher is a Leading Politician, to behave this way does not ADD to our POLITICAL DISCOURSE. If anything, it ONLY raises the Political Temperature in a manner that undermines the Political INTERESTS the Paper seeks to serve.

The side from the DCE will still not change the allegation. The DCE has every right to tell his side of the story anytime. The paper is reporting what it has at the moment. You should also know that newspaper publishing is a business and very competitive, if you don't carry the story someone else will. You just have to report what is said or what the petition contains, that's all. There is nothing wrong with this. Those who complain don't know the difference between investigative journalism and news reporting.
