  We need career guidance for what jobs? There are no jobs, period. So how much can guidance do? Do we have jobs in Ghana that are not filled? We need doctors but not many of us can become doctors. Also, we don't have schools to train that large number of doctors anyway. We should thank other countries for absorbing our surplus workforce. The government needs to create conditions for businesses to succeed and for them to hire people. When that happens the universities and employers will adapt to each other. It is disheartening to hear leaders make statements like this without analyzing the situation on the ground.

  We must begin to direct the students into business. It is time we create an environment where self-employment would be seen as a viable career option. Start to teach them how to start your own business from primary schools to Universities. But I am afraid that it would not happen because the present army of Professors, doctors etc. have no idea how to even set up and manage a chop bar.

  Do you think the government has any plans for self-employment? Nope. Self-employment works when there are things like infrastructure, knowledge, market and access to capital. Just imagine the atrocious energy situation. Also, the youth needs business role models but we don't have that many of them because the government is killing businesses. The game in town is politics and stealing so that is what the youth aspire to be. The other option is to leave the country. Cocoa farming has been self-employment opportunity for generations but who wants to be a cocoa farmer now when you can work for the government, steal and become rich overnight. Our whole thinking about the role of government and its actual operation needs an overhaul. Then the people can realize the opportunities in everything around them. Self-employment therefore becomes a viable choice.
