We should be cautious as we trot. Local Rice is very expensive compared to imported perfumed rice. This is the crux of the matter. If it can be addressed and supply outstrip demand, then why not?

Small scale businesses are engines of every growing economy. The production of local rice must be encouraged as well as its consumption.. The government needs to provide financial and technical to local rice farmers to embark upon large scale production and to compete with foreign producers. This will help to bring the production cost of down and its products on our local markets. Locally produced rice are more nutritious and healthier than imported rice. A high rate of diabetes cases in Ghana are as a result of high consumption of polished rice imported into the country. In addition, the government should not drive away inland rice importers and give advantage to foreigners. It is politically unwise ,socially injustice and financial unfair to drive away the citizens from local businesses in favour of foreigners. Foreign importers of rice must be banned and inland importance of rice must be encouraged.

Ghana has a right to encourage local rice production. Banning rice importation is is toodrastic a measure to take. The local procuers have not assured the consumer that local production will fill any void ctreated by banning of rice importation., nor is there any assurance that the price of locally produced rice will be competitive with that of imported rice. Perhaps there should be a higher importation tax placed on imported rice, but not an outright ban. Ghanaian rice growers should figure out why their costs of production may be a factor weighing against them, and how that can be addressed. Asia rice growers have mastered a better technique of rice growing, allowing them to produce their crops more cheaply than can be done by Ghana rice growers. With technical assistance from agencies and the government, Ghana rice growers will eventually get to the level of producing the crops at a far lower cost, therby enabling them to sell competitvely locally while also exporting the same crops. The expertise exists in Ghana to make rice farming more economical and profitable. Former President Kufuor has a foundation set to address this issue, and the rice growers association of Ghana could benefit from its input.
