  Thanks Kwesi, for taking time to compile your article. For reminding readers of the need to conserve energy, you are making a bold step in the direction proposed by the Minister of Power (not "Energy", as you write). The next step is to search for innovative, sustainable solutions. All the knowledge is there, what's needed is the will, both on the part of government and citizens. Happy New Year!

  Surreptitiously, year 2015 has crept on us.
  When some world leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit called for the adoption in September 2000 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with the specific target of integrating all the 8 principles into country policies and programmes, that was the time, as a nation, we should have buckled down to meet the 2015 deadline.
  
  It is my candid opinion that if all of us, irregardless of our political affiliations, had zeroed in on complying with meeting the targets, we surely would have made a difference with our energy challenges.

  Practically, a draft of a conceptual development roadmap for the serious persons in "government", if you will, energy being a key element. Just as the "unserious" politicians have chased our experts, they have failed to rally the academy, and the academy, particularly the technologists, in turn are failing the people.
  
  Case in point!
  
  In a country where more than 50% of the population do not have easy access to portable water, it baffles the mind to understand why "water-closet toilets" are the preferred toilets (in site plans) , even in the country-side and remote areas. The academy, technologists, business/Bankers, and the government/DCEs, etc., have utterly failed to develop and promote alternatives (e.g., waterless toilet systems).
  
  Also, with the rather low residential demand for electricity (compared to say the US and other countries), given the weather and minimal appliances in homes, why are solar power systems not of the highest priority?

  OUR COMMENT: We are thinking the problems with hydro electric power (HEP) might be related to poor management, deferred maintenance, lack of proper planning (i.e. PEOPLE, that is).
  
  While climate change is an emerging constraint, it would really be a factor if it is the case rains have been decreasing, particularly along the HEP watershed system(s). The information (1900-2012) we have does not support decreasing rains in Ghana up to this point. Ghana is receiving more rain. In fact, the corollary of climate change is flooding, (i.e. too much water to manage safely/effectively).

  Plainly "nsuo to, na nsuo ayra" - (When it rains, rain vanishes), again due to poor management, lack of funds, lack of planning, (and lack of proper leadership)!
