First baby of 2015 arrives one perfect minute past midnight

A boy named Yaw arrived in Minneapolis at 12:01 a.m. New Year’s Day, and he’s believed to be the Twin Cities’ first baby of 2015.

Yaw was born at the Mother Baby Center and weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds, 9.5 ounces. He was due Dec. 27.

The newborn’s mother, Bertha Asare of St. Paul, declined to be interviewed but said through a hospital spokesman, “The timing was perfect.”

“Having the first baby of the year is the most amazing feeling a mother could ever have,” Asare said.

Yaw’s full name: Okatakyie Yaw Afriyie Asare.

In the custom of her roots in Ghana, the Akan tribe, Asare named her baby after the day he was born. “Yaw” is the name for a boy born on Thursday, Asare said. “Okatakyie” is a title of an important person in society.

“Afriyie” means he came well and at the perfect time, she said.

Yaw is Asare’s second child. Yaw’s older brother also was born on a Thursday and also is named Yaw.

Asare said she has lived in the United States for eight years, the past four in Minnesota.

The Mother Baby Center opened in February 2013 and is a joint venture of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. It’s attached to Children’s on Chicago Avenue S. and E. 26th Street in Minneapolis. A new Mother Baby Center is scheduled to open in July at Allina’s Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. ?

These kids speak their local languages, eat their foods etc. I also know tons of uneducated ghanaians parents who refuse to teach their kids native language, eat native foods etc. I don't know if this is ignorance or plain stupidity. Your identity is not.your citizenry. Your identity is who you are, your culture etc. Where you're born does not.define or make who you are. My friend and his wife are 100% Ghanaians but their children never speak with Ghanaian accent even though the parents speak Ghanaian language 100% of the time at home. What you are talking about i s an exception, not the rule when it comes to kids born abroad. He is not a Ghanaian by food or citenship. Period! According to the present stupid laws in Ghana, a child born to even two Ghanaian parents abroad is not a Ghanaian. Even Ghanaians who acquired foreign citizenship for various reasons are no more Ghanaians.

If you have on Ghanaian born parent and one Ghanaian born grandparent, you are in fact entitled to dual citizenship. Ghanaians simply do not bother to file for this benefit for their children. It is important to do so if your child ever needs to open a bank account or start a business in Ghana.
