  @Yaw Boakye I like interesting contributors like you. You made a very good point but you failed to conclude that we have to place practical s at the doorstep of these institutions. Just turning a poly into a uni is not going to turn things around. What we need is, a polytechnic that works. In some countries like South Korea and Australia, polytechnics are equivalent to university education bcos of the ingredients involve. Machines for students to dismantle and rebuild in all aspects. Emphasis must be placed on chemistry, physics and mathematics and even offer free education in these areas of study. We need engineers in mechanical, structural, civil, rail, tunnel, sewerage, water, aerospace, aeronautical, computer science and electronic. This is what will turn Ghana round and not necessarily technical university.

Somebody better advise him to invest his stolen or corrupt money in Ghana instead of creating jobs in other countries with his investments there. He is rather boosting the brain drain by his myopic ideas.

  If we have students who study carpentry, auto mechanics, electrical installation, fish farming, food technology, glass technology, plastic technology, etc, at the degree level from any of the proposed technical universities, they will be able to create their own jobs after school without waiting for anybody to employ them. On the contrary, persons with degrees in geography, history, classics, political science,etc, from our traditional universities will always wait on others for employment.

  The forum on the theme: “Repositioning Technical Education as a Driver of Economic Transformation and National Development,” brought together a number of distinguished personalities in the education sector for deliberations.
  
  Its aim was to create the context for understanding and collaboration amongst all stakeholders and it was also a platform for a national discourse in a bid to fine tune on-going implementation processes towards the conversion.
  
  President Mahama said the decision to convert Polytechnics into Technical Universities was carefully thought through.

  Ghanaians are tired of being victims to wrong decisions of these ignorant,naive politicians since time immemorial,and it's about time these politicians knew difference and make decisions that can cash in.
  What would put these youth into gainful employment as early as possible,when they graduate from such institutions?
  I feel it badly when I see a young girl/boy's time being wasted just because there is no job for him/her, after all the time wasted and effort put in studying so hard at school.
  THEY CAN'T AFFORD TIME-WASTING ANY LONGER,FOR TME IS THE ONLY GIFT GIVEN BY GOD,TO MANKIND EQUALLY.

  What is the logic in Mahama's statement? Is the lack of employment due to absence of Technical Universities. Is the prevalence of poverty the result of lack of proper skills for the many unemployed graduates. Weren't NVTI, Technical Schools, Training Colleges, Post-Secs, PolyTechnicals supposed to do the same things i.e. absorb the many graduates that drop out of the mainstream Secondary Schools system until the illiterate group of revolutionaries calling themselves PNDC collapsed it. Then they replaced it it with a useless JSS that produces a mass of unemployable good-for-nothing young kids. Then we are now trying to figure out what to do with these kids. These are some of the destructions illiterate Jerry Rawlings inflicted on Ghana

  Let me teach him some basic rudiments of education: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Imperial College (UK), University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Tsin Gua University,Technical Universities in Berlin, Munich and Aachen, are examples of TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES.

  When the teacher training colleges were given tertiary status, there was no complain. When two new univerities were created in the Eastern and Brong Ahafo Regions it was hailed as a noble idea. When Nurses training colleges were made diploma awarding institution that one was Hallelujah. Now that polytechnics are going to be upgraded to technical university level, hey, Hell is breaking loose. People want to use others as intellectual and career slaves at all cost, why. This pre-colonial slavery mentality that made some of our chiefs to sell their sons and daughters in exchange for dressing mirrors and bottles of alcohol is still in the minds of Ghanaians. We all know that when you go to the GES there is a very high shortage for science teachers and technical and vocational instructors. Why have our traditional university system not been able to fill that gap. Technical and vocation is an option and deserve to be offered even up to the PhD level.

  Our educational system does not have any technical/vocational education traditions/culture. You remember during the colonial days when our elders had to travel abroad for tertiary education majority, if not all, went in for the arts and humanities like Law, Economics, Commerce, Political Science, History, Theology, etc. Only few of them went in for medicine and other allied sciences and so practical education has not been a priority area in Ghana history. Subsequently, those who say they are in charge of technical/ vocational education are only pretending. The question is, of all Ghana government scholarships offered to Ghanaians how many has been offered to technicians and technologist. The answer is none. They will rather give it to those going to study gender studies, classics, political science, oriental studies,etc. So you see, we need to start from somewhere.

"For someone who is certain about his chosen profession, a specialized[technical or vocational] education can be the right choice. An obvious example is a musician who chooses to study at a school like Juilliard. Vocationally oriented specialized education curricula can give the student a definite advantage in the job market. Besides the very focused course of study, specialized education programs often offer their students co-op or other work-related experience. Specialized education programs can often be completed in a shorter time than general education programs, which can save a significant amount of money. Many working adults pursue specialized education programs to begin or resume their careers in the least possible amount of time.In a difficult economy, many less affluent students believe that a general education, especially in the humanities, is a luxury they cannot afford. It is generally easier to make the transition from a general to a specialized education than vice versa, although moving in the opposite direction is not impossible. The life circumstances of the student are likely to be the biggest influence on the choice between general and specialized education." We must therefore not think that technical education is for the intellectually weak students. We need technical universities now.

Mr. Kwartey,please think through. There are so many findings out there for your attention.At both Accra and Kumasi, polytechnic, the would be teachers are due for pension. Even if you decide to extend their tenure, they will need upgrade. I spoke with Mr.Asamoa Dodoo and then deputy minister for education way back on these.I think is a good idea but no now.We are not ready, Mr Mahama.

  Lecturers in tertiary institutions must recognize the fact that students in these institution are adults. Some may be married and some may be business executives.
  
  It has been said that many lecturers lack teaching methodologies. What should be the minimum requirement when recruiting lecturers into a tertiary institution? Is it a masters degree or a PhD with a course in education??
  
  Professors in tertiary institutions must read GES directives. There are many important and useful GES directives which would help them.
  
  GES banned all forms of corporal punishment in Educational institutions but there are reports that some tertiary institutions are still carrying out this practice. Asking students to kneel down and so on.

Buy a brand new car and give it to the engineering department of the KNUST to play with for a start and then come talking tough. You cant create technical universities while the existing ones have basically nothing. A level one institution here in the uk is more equipped and practical than all universities in Ghana put together. Some of these level one iinstitutions have private jets to play with, dismantling and building. Why have we failed so badly? Why? Joke joke joke

  Germany has Universitats and Fachhochschules. Universitats are the universities and the Fachhochschules are the technical universities which awards technical degrees. I will advice the government of Ghana to consult the Germans about this conversion since it has really helped Germany to develop the technical skills of its students and has contributed immensely to the German economy.

  It is a very good thing to convert these polytechnics unto technical universities,but we have to make sure,pertinent jobs have already been created to absorb them,after their graduation.
  I have a nephew who has graduated from KNUTS,as a land economist,but still at home,unemployed.
  That is my point.
  I think it's good but the timing is wrong.
  What we need now,in my opinion,is to find a way to turn our economy into productive one but not still wallowing in raw material exporting trade.
  If the required jobs are there,these young guys will rush in such universities to be trained.
  If this could be about petrochemical courses,then I could have jumped on board,because we lack those skills,as a nation,and foreigners have gotten the best out of that.
