KNUST was set up as a Technical University. Instead of converting all Polytechnics to Universities the Government must rather resource the KNUST to enable it perform its function.

Not everybody can stand the rigors of University education and that is why we have the Technicians and Sub-professionals who handle the practical aspects of the various Disciplines like Engineering and Surveying

I do appreciate the concerns of those who went through poly. I feel sorry for Ghana these days because we have all these graduates who cannot find decent jobs to do. Let's think about quality and not quantity

Clearly Dr E.K. Hayford know next to nothing about polytechnic education; There is no need to make universities out of polytechnics; what have plagued polytechnics from inception have been the law that established them, quality instructors and supporting staff with the requisite experience and exposure, inadequate infrastructure and equipment. Instead of paying a consultant huge sums of money to a consultant who knows next to nothing about polytechnic education, the ministry could have made the National Accreditation Board take a critical and a second look at polytechnic education; polytechnics could be capacitated to offer courses to the highest degree in any chosen profession and still be polytechnics; if there is a problem with polytechnic education fix it; we all know and are aware of the kind of graduates our treasured universities are turning out. Ghanaians are also aware of a university in Ghana that boast of a faculty of engineering, yet the professors in the faculty take their vehicles to non-graduate and uneducated mechanics because the professors and anyone else in the faculty have no practical experience in repairing cars; how many graduates in Ghana want to be employed to do practical hands-on work? Is this the kind of technical personnel the country wish to continue producing? What a shame... I thought polytechnic education was supposed to fix this problem. The notion that polytechnic are there to produce middle-level man power must be flashed; does Dr E.K. Hayford have any idea how valuable it will be for Ghana’s future if highly on-the-job educated and experience managers with practical technical and scientific knowhow are trained today? Government did not even consider technical schools as part of the 200 Senior High Schools is promised to build and is building; yet we all know students from the few technical schools in the country come out equipped to enter the artisanal job market; provide better polytechnics for them to further their education and the country will have the needed manpower to move forward.

Your point is well-taken that hands-on experience should be part and parcel of any form of education, particularly technical education.

But in today's engineering world, not all things are visible and tangible.

Yes, an experienced brick layer can help put up a mansion. But it takes a structural engineer, with specialized software, computational abilities, and a thorough undertanding of the laws of physics as well as the nature of structural materials, to determine if the building can stand the forces of nature.

It is easy to use the automobile to illustrate the importance of "practical experience", but what this world is coming to, are cars that are not only fitted with nuts and bolts, but also with microprocessors and embedded software.

When a car's dashboard is a tablet computer which displays an error message when you start the engine, what "fitter" would you rely on?

A university engineering student need not know only how to unscrew an alternator from car, but must also be exposed to the fundamental knowledge of Physics, so that he understands how a coil turning withing a magnetic field produces electricity.

It would not be enough to train Engineering students how to remove a lead-acid battery from a vehicle, but also to expose them to the physical chemistry behind such batteries. That would make them understand how to properly charge such batteries and even how to avoid corrosion of metal partsn knowing the kind of acid those batteries contain.

There should be a big difference between an Engineering Faculty professor and an auto mechanic. Needless to say, universities deal with in depth knowledge, concepts, and principles. That is what drives discovery and innovation, which requires far more than the ability to use a set of pliers.

The polytechnic lack basic facilities like internet, library, PhD holders, Senior lecturers, offices for Lecturers and adequate furnished lecture halls. Dr. again because you don't this, currently there is an on-going dubious mass promotion of senior lecturers on various campuses awaiting this so called conversion just to qualify these polytechnics to run the degree programs. Please why such haste?
