I won't be surprised if this is merely electrical problems due to the cheap wiring used in Ghana and the frequent dumsor dumsor. The question though is why was so much stored in one place and did the store house have sprinklers, alarms etc. Our Fire Service is so ill equipped that they hardly save any serious fire. I am sure the water hydrants that the Fire Service is supposed to hook to did not even have water. Assuming that this was arson, I think having a better facility, decentralizing the store, and a better equipped Fire department would have minimized the loss. Sure the top echelon of Ministry should be fired for poor planning and management -- yep, let the heads roll quickly.

Sadly this is a preventable situation and the fact that we do not have adequate security at such key places n itself is an indictment of our system. Poor resources for fighting fires is also a serious chronic problem.

These fundamentals have got to be right and all Ghanaians should be concerned about these issues. It is a pity when some 'jubilate' when these things happen. Really sad and pathetic.

Ghana Says Nations Want Regional Force to Fight Boko Haram (Bloomberg)

Ghana and four other West African nations are ready to provide soldiers to a regional military force to fight Boko Haram, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said.

The force could be created immediately once the African Union or United Nations establish a mandate, Mahama said in a phone interview on Friday from the capital, Accra.

The presidents of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are prepared to contribute troops, though “they want it structured properly and to have their appropriate mandate before any such commitment,” he said.

Boko Haram has killed at least 13,000 people in Nigeria since 2009 in a campaign to impose Islamic law in Africa’s largest economy. Violence has increased ahead of presidential elections in February, and is spreading into neighboring countries.

“We need to find a multinational dimension to deal with the issue of Boko Haram because it’s obvious that Nigeria, marooned on its own, finds it difficult to deal with it,” Mahama said.

‘Shocking Evidence’

Chad began sending soldiers to neighboring Cameroon on Friday to prevent Boko Haram from gaining more territory. The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, this month threatened Cameroonian President Paul Biya in a video posted on YouTube. Niger hosts more than 100,000 people who have fled attacks in northern Nigeria, including 25,000 children.

Amnesty International says Boko Haram destroyed more than 3,700 buildings in an attack last week on two towns in Nigeria’s northeast last week. Satellite images of the area showed “indisputable and shocking evidence” the towns had been razed, the London-based group said.

Mahama said in a speech earlier today that he’s requesting a special meeting at an African Union summit scheduled this month to discuss a joint strategy against Islamist violence. In East Africa, for example, Kenya should get more support in battling al-Shabaab, he said in the interview.

Boko Haram “will be best dealt with in a more coordinated manner,” Mahama said. “If it’s not dealt with, it’s a cancer that continues to grow. The whole region is threatened.”

What was in the report that the experts brought in from the U.S. say about the fire incidents then and what measures were taken by the NDC govt in addressing the issues raised in that report?
