Kufuor's eight years as President saw economic growth of more than 70 per cent - the first prolonged period since independence when Ghana was not getting poorer. But Ghanaians chose to exercise their democratic right to change and earlier this month narrowly elected Atta Mills.

No where in my submission do I assert that presence of many political parties makes a nation democratic. Let me educate you on what democracy is - The generic definition "is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system." In the phrase of Abraham Lincoln, democracy is a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people."

Note that power is vested in the people and the selection of representatives is through a "free electoral system". In China the Chinese Communist Party has abrogated to itself the role of being the sole representative of the people. They vet and select the represent and the people are suppose to rubber stamp it or face charges of "enemy of the people."

No where is there reference to voting for responsible leaders. It is certainly desirable but what is your definition of "responsible" and note that in a democracy you VOTE for representatives not leaders. You the people vote for those whom you believe can represent your views and carryout your policy wishes. Those wishes can only be known through a process of open dialoguing and espousing of multiple viewpoints. Note OPEN is the operative word.

Neither the Chinese system or the Russian system current meets this criteria. Sure there political leadership has done better in providing for the material well-being of the general masses but that does not make them more democratic than Ghana. They are simply better economic managers than the Ghanaian political classes.
