Perhaps Wontumi's campaign can better be directed at the transport owners who refuse to reduce their fares to reflect the modest reduction in petroleum prices.

I also find it quite interesting that as a young oil producing country, we are completely oblivious to the impact of lower world prices on crude oil on our oil revenues, yet as a net oil importing country, we are keen for reductions in fuel prices when world market prices drop such as we are witnessing right now.

As with all things, I predict that within the next 12 months, world crude oil prices will climb up, perhaps to mid 2014 price levels. When (not if) the world crude prices creep up, are we in Ghana (and those planning these demonstrations) going to encourage the government to RAISE prices of petroleum products?

I have always been of the view that government should 'absorb' extra price rises in world crude imports, so as to 'cushion' ordinary folks, and stabilise prices in general. I am not an economist but I'm not also completely naive, but I believe that in the overall scheme of things, government savings from absorbing the extra pressure will benefit us economically by keeping prices of goods and services more stable over longer periods, giving no excuses to those who raise their prices needlessly, and also reduce pressure from trade unions for increases in salaries.

I have not done the sums, but my hypothesis is that if you put the sum total of all the snowballing effects of fuel price rises together for a net importer of crude like Ghana, the costs to the economy will far outweigh the benefits of transferring global price increases to consumers (I honestly believe this to be the case and would challenge economists to do the sums).

We are grateful that world crude prices have fallen somehow to levels where in my opinion they should have been 3 years ago. However at the same time that we all wish to see lowering of prices, we need to be careful not to over do it, otherwise we are giving the government an open door to justify any future increases when world crude prices go up. That I'm afraid will have serious negative impact on individuals, families and our economy.

These demonstrations are therefore uncalled for, wholly unhelpful and if done for political reasons, are unlikely to win a lot of votes the way I see it.

Getting to the end of the year the government increased fuel price s by 3% and turn around to tell the masses that it has reduced fuel by 10%(making it 10%-3%=7%) you think ghanaians are fools, no way.Fuel price in ghana should go down by 30-40%. Chairman Wontumi I fully support you and I know majority of ghanaians including members of the NDC support this move for demonstration. The first tariff increase by the NPP government was in March 2001 where there was an increase of 104%. The T.U.C, G.M.A. and the so called civil society groups in Ghana all saw that as NORMAL. Then again, in 2004, the NPP increased petrol price by another 100% and the GPRTU never called any press conference, while the TUC and GMA all remained silent.Where were you then Mr. Wontumi

If we want good hospitals, schools, roads etc we must pay for them and the only way to do this is through taxation and other means. This demonstration should see Ghanaians feeling the brunt of this recklessness and impunity and a complete and total bastardization of institutions and their statutory mandate as has been observed with the Nhis, Getfund, Dacf, Capitation grant, etc, etc, and now the Automatic Price Adjustment formula under the NPA, moving and congregating from the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions congregating in Accra, to ensure that the principles underlying the setting up of the NPA to regulate the upward and downward movement of fuel prices using the automatic price adjustment formula is adhered to the letter.
No more of the recklessness and the impunity, enough is enough.
The yenti3 obiaaa philosophy undergirded by thievery of the Mahama -led NDC gov't which is being visited on hapless Ghanaians who did not partake in this gargantuan and unprecedented looting, incompetence and mismanagement which has caused the collapse of the economy and the catastrophic descent of the local currency the cedi and exchange rate losses, would not be borne by the masses, no, no, no, not when the prices of oil on the world market has fallen and petrol prices all over the globe have been reduced commensurately, with the percentage drop in oil prices.
This is a righteous, principled and way overdue demonstration.
