Govt should get it inside its ignorant head that no aspect of national security is higher than the health of the people! Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone stand as living proof of this simple truth. A national facility of this kind serving as a crucial part of our health care system should enforce stringent security measures. The warehouse should be protected around the clock - 24 x 7 - by the police and / or military. The Central Medical Store warehouse is even more important than Burma Camp or any other military base in the country, and we should protect it from theft, arson, and any other form of sabotage with all the seriousness and weaponry we have got!

Security WILL walk you out off the premises the very day the theft is discovered and depending on the amounts involved get you arrested and prosecuted. This is why the heads of ministry including the minister should roll. The fire may have been prevented if these rogues had been apprehended quickly.

What sense does it make to have such a large national facility without any security measures? We build expensive mansions, buy expensive luxury cars, boast about being the first to have a private jet and ignore health facilities and health workers.

We allow foreign workers to enter Ghana and illegally engage in toxic mining practices that poison our drinking water sources and agricultural lands. And we leave the one big, national facility for importing and storing medicine for the whole country at the mercy of internal thieves and saboteurs?

I have said it time and time again that anyone who has not worked in the civil service cannot rule Ghana because he does not know the dealings of civil service employers.
This is not new. It has been going on since the 1980s. That time I was employed as apharmacist at cape coast hospital in the central region. When you go for supplies, the one in charge of the regional MC will tell you thaton paper CR is issued with let us say 5 million ampicillin capsules but in reality the CMS at gave him 4.5 million. He accepts it because he has been requested help in balancing their books. The colleague at the RMS is then short of 500,000 capsules so he also will plead you to accept less quantity but in reality the waybill he issue and sign by both of us donot tally with the sopplies issued.
When the pharmacist get to hospital he also will have to his leger with gost names just to make the numbers. When auditors to the pharmacy everything will seem normal.
There are checks and balances put in places but people will always find a way around. Drugs meant for Gov,t hospital are sold on the open market without any fear. Some of my colleagues at that time argued that if Docters us Gov,t faccilites to do their private business then that justifies what they (Pharmacist)are doing.

The government operates buses, the government sells electricity, the government sells water, the government sells medications, the government sells cement, the government sells iron rods and other metals, etc. All these business can effectively be taken over by private enterpreneuers.

Hypocritically, they shout ' Ghana is bad, no money for X'mas, we can't take it anymore because the economy is very poor, with high level of unemployment. They point their fingers at others about corruption whilst they regard themselves as sacrosanct!! These are the people in all our departments, establishments, offices and institutions. Being them government or private. Interestingly, they are our fathers, mothers, sisters brothers, uncles, friends and relatives, politicians, religious leaders, traditional leaders, educators, lawyers, doctors, nurses etc who have being placed in positions of trust but have failed us miserably. Getting rid of the rot must start from ourselves. Attitude and mentality towards our Nation including the people and the future must change for a positive Ghana.
