I was taught in my Development Economics Class at the University of Ghana Legon that the Feasibility Study for a Hydro-elecrtic dam at the Atewa Gorge was undertaken in the yeat 1906 3 years before Nkrumah was born, There were subsequent followup feasibility studies about 3 or 4 of the before the Messiah returned to Ghana.

HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS

It all began with the identification by Sir Albert Kitson, a geologist, in 1913 of large bauxite deposits in the Kwahu hills in Ghana and a gorge on the Volta River in which a major hydro-electric development could be undertaken. The juxtaposition of bauxite and electric power could form the basis of aluminum production.
Sir Albert‘s first bauxite discovery was at Mt. Ejuanema near Mpraeso on the Kwahu Plateau. Other deposits were subsequently found at Sefwi-Bekwai and larger ones in Aya-Yenahin near Kumasi and at Awaso. The hydro-electric development potential was identified in a narrow gorge on the Volta River in the Ajena /Akosombo area. Other hydro-electric sites were also identified at Bui on the Black Volta and on rivers in the Western Region.

Kitson submitted a proposal in 1924 for constructing a hydro dam at Akosombo and developing bauxite mining, alumina plant and aluminum smelting facilities. The proposal also envisaged building canals for irrigation on the Accra plains, tapping the reservoir resources of the lake to be created by the hydro-dam.

Modernization and economic growth starts with manpower and capital from home grown policies. Start mobilizing the people to produce and stop all these historic family lectures. The studies reported started in 1915.

'The dam was conceived in 1915 by geologist Albert Ernest Kitson, but no plans were drawn until the 1940s'.

That is one of several references I found.

Others may have considered it a viable project and discussed it along the way. It is in this vein that I would think that contributions would be acknowledged. Let us not, however, give credit where one has not earned it. That would be simply disengenous.

If Danquah asked a question about it, it is simply because the rudiments of the project had already been introduced.

Sir Albert Ernest Kitson (1868-1937), geologist, was born on 21 March 1868 at Manchester, England, son of John Kitson, schoolmaster, and his wife Margaret Wishart, née Neil. Albert received his early education in India where his father ran a school. The family migrated to Victoria probably in 1878; both parents took up teaching posts at Enoch's Point State School and transferred to Winton North State School near Benalla next year. After John Kitson's death in 1879 Margaret succeeded him as head-teacher; her own children were among her pupils. Albert in 1886 entered the clerical division of the Victorian Public Service by examination.

Initially a clerk with the Postmaster-General's Department at a yearly salary of £80, in 1889 Kitson transferred to the Department of Lands and Survey where he was responsible for keeping rent-roll registers. A further transfer in 1896 took him to the Department of Mines and Water Supply. He undertook part-time studies in geology, mining, and surveying at the Working Men's College and the University of Melbourne. Kitson's success in these studies together with his scientific competence and enthusiasm attracted the attention of the geological survey branch of his department. While still employed as a clerk at £200 a year he carried out geological field work from 1899 until September 1904 when he was appointed senior field geologist at £300.

A member of both the Royal Society and the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria and of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, Kitson participated in all the meetings of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science between 1898 and 1907. In 1897 he was elected fellow of the Geological Society of London. As well as the many reports he prepared for the Victorian Geological Survey he published scientific papers in various Australian journals on geology and natural history. His work included a survey of Victorian coal deposits and inspection of gold and coal mining. In 1900 he surveyed the Buchan Caves in East Gippsland and recommended the creation of a reserve; one of the caves now bears his name. He was a keen collector of natural history specimens, sending many to Victorian and overseas institutions. He compiled a catalogue of the Tertiary fossils of Australia and had a fossil mollusc, a fossil eucalypt and a living eucalypt named after him.

In 1906-11 Kitson was principal of the Mineral Survey of Southern Nigeria and in 1913 was appointed director of the Gold Coast Geological Survey. Upon retirement to England in 1930 he acted as a geological adviser to the Colonial Office and joined the boards of several mining companies. The author of numerous reports and papers on geology, mining, water power, and geography, Kitson is credited with the discovery of economically important deposits of coal in Southern Nigeria and manganese, diamonds, and bauxite in the Gold Coast. The Geological Society, London, awarded him the Wollaston fund in 1918 and the Lyell medal in 1927. He was president of Section C (Geology) of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1929 and of the Geologists' Association in 1934-36. Appointed C.B.E. in 1918 and C.M.G. in 1922, he was knighted in 1927.

Kitson ('Kittie' to his friends), a 'serious' man, religious and an abstainer, clearly enjoyed the field work involved in geology; he was an energetic worker and a strict disciplinarian. A facility in handling snakes, acquired in the Australian bush, earned him a reputation on the Gold Coast as a fetish doctor.

In 1910 Kitson married Margaret Legge, née Walker, who died in 1920. In 1927 he married Elinore Almond Ramage. He died of respiratory disease at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England, on 8 March 1937, survived by his second wife, their two sons and a stepson of his first

The problem with these idiotic politicians all, is their glorification of useless icons whose failed vision has brought us where we are. The focus should necessarily be on solving current problems, not assigning past blame or glory. The whole business of deifying or vilifying Nkrumah, Danquah, Busia, or any of these "founding fathers" should STOP. There is nothing to be gained from it. Just get on with solving our current problems for us or get out of the way and let the Chinese take it all over and down in the dumps. We are fools, that's what we are.

So, WHAT? When Dr. Nkrumah sent Mr. Komla Agbeli Gbedema, Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister at the time, to the United States to negotiate for a loan for the Akosombo project, the Danquah-Busia faction also sent their representative to urge the Americans to deny Ghana the loan.

The Danquah-Busia faction likewise oppossed and vehemently worked against every project that Nkrumah envisioned and proposed. These included the Accra-Tema motorway, the Takoradi Harbour, the new Tema Township project, to mention only a few. They even opposed Nkrumah's call for independence for the Gold Coast NOW and, therefore, sent a delegation to the British queen Elizabeth II, asking her and her government to reject Nkrumah's CPP's request for Gold Coast's independence.

So, if the Akosombo dam was Danquah's idea but he turned against it only because Nkrumah had adopted it and brought the idea to fruition, what achievement did Danquah make? The Danquah-Busia clique were destroyers and were responsible for Ghana's continued underdevelopment. For as soon as they helped the CIA to overthrow Nkrumah and his regime, they proceeded to destroy all the numerous Nkumah's industrialisation projects. Otherwise Ghana would have become self-sufficient today in many fields.

It might have also been the case on Danquah's part, who never forgave the British when the Privy Council, the final court of appeal, "sentenced to death by hanging by the neck until they died". It must be noted that the culprits were his own relatives, namely, Asare Apietu, Kwame Kagya, Kwaku Amoako Atta, Kwadwo Amoako, Kwasi Pipim, Opoku Ahwenee, A. E. B. Danquah and Owusu Akyem-Tenteng.

F.K. Buah in his definitive A History Of Ghana, noted that " When introducing Nkrumah at a rally held at Agona Swedru, J.B. Danquah was reported to have assured the people, quite prophetically, "If we (the old group) should fail you, this man (Kwame Nkrumah) would not fail you!" (See F.K. Buah, A History Of Ghana, Macmillan Publishers Ltd. , pg. 167.

Surely, Danquah should have supported Nkrumah in building Akosombo dam and the smelter in Tema, while still advocating for the exploitation of the Kyebi bauxite. Nkrumah wanted to exploit the Kyebi bauxite deposits as much as Danquah, but was not prepared to sacrifice the Akosombo dam and the smelter for the sake of the bauxite. Nkrumah correctly realised that the dam was vital to our country's future energy needs, and felt it necessary to build it immediately rather than wait.

Danquah's motives in advocating the Volta Basin development appear to have been driven by the desire to exploit the Kyebi bauxite deposits. The narrowness of his vision is reflected in the selfish stance he took in opposing Nkrumah when it became apparent that the Kyebi bauxite would not be refined as part of the Akosombo dam project.

This episode in our history is a moot lesson for our politicians today. Had Nkrumah not persevered with building the Akosombo dam, it is unlikely it would ever have been built, which would have greatly hindered our economic development. We must put national interests ahead of narrow selfish political interests, as Danquah appears to have done.
