This is a very sad situation and not happening for the first time. Indeed it's an indictment on us as a country not caring much about issues relating to mental health and persons with mental disorders as a whole.
After years of advocacy which culminated in the enactment of a modern day mental health legislation in March 2012, situations like these should have completely ceased or minimised significantly.
The mental health law requires that 8% of Ghana's annual total health budget must be allotted for mental health care and services. This is in addition to funds from other sources such as donor partners, corporate organizations etc. Why is it that after Parliament has approved budget estimates for the Ministry of Health since last year, the 8% due the Mental Health Authority has still not been released?
This clearly exemplifies how mental health issues are consigned ton the fringes by policy makers and administrators let alone segments of our society.
I hereby call on the Ministry of Health and gov't for that matter to release immediately the mandatory funds to the Mental Heatlh Authority to perform its functions smoothly and effectively.
Let's remember that all of us are vulnerable and likely to be affected with one mental health condition in our lifetime or another.
Mental illness is no respecter of persons and so dare to care!!!!

The first time this obvious lunatic caught my attention was when he strangely signed a letter claiming my brother,a colleague medical practitioner was suffering from what he termed 'possible delusional disorder' without evidence.My brother was then subsequently sacked in a letter signed by the Director General Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira.The reason ascribed to my brother's dismissal was that he had refused to have compulsory assessment and treatment for a 'possible delusional disorder' never to be reinstated until he complies.This was the machination of the so-called chief psychiatrist of Ghana.This was also the action of a man who was all over the place to push the mental health bill into an act to create another office for himself called the Mental Health Authority which he now heads.I prayed hard to know who this character was being a health professional myself until one day somebody pointed him out at the corridors of the Ministry of Health as the man who criminally connived to dubiously implicate my brother with a mental illness in show of solidarity with fellow Akans.I could not help but laugh on the quiet when i saw him.In short a loud voice unkempt midget in over size suit and shoes was a sight to behold.But what immediately came to mind was his competence,character and capabilities in being the don of mental health in Ghana judging by his ludicrous and ridiculous action that caused my brother his job.There is no denying the fact that my brother was pursued with venom by the management of Effia Nkwanta Regional hospital who subjected him to some horrific and inhuman atrocities.The Medical Director,one Dr Ntodi they called him sacked my brother at the level of the regional hospital but was compelled to reinstate him when my brother won his case at CHRAJ Western Region.When the Medical Director subsequently vowed at a management meeting to get my brother expelled from the Ghana Health Service,he had an equally stupid idiot at top position to use in the person of the Chief Psychiatrist,Dr Akwasi Osei.Akwasi osei deliberately embarked on a journey to Effia Nkwanta hospital under the pretext of investigating two specialist who had fought in the hospital.In a conspiracy with the hospital management my brother was lured by his best friend and boss( now dating his ex-fiancee) Richard Anthony to be victimized by Akwasi Osei.Akwasi in typical show of tribal solidarity and nepotism defied all the evidence of gruesome inhuman atrocities against my brother in the hospital to criminally forge a mental illness against him used as bases to dismiss him from work.I honestly do not think Akwasi Osei action is an issue of intellectual dishonesty informed by tribal prejudice against a northerner he doesn't like.I think for a chief psychiatrist professing advocacy against abuse of the mentally ill and privileges and rights to be enjoyed by same to act the manner he acted particularly against a colleague doctor,there must be something fundamentally wrong in his own mental faculties.I am talking about an unusually bizarre and outrageous indiscretion of recommending the sacking of a colleague that he claims is suffering from a 'possible delusional disorder without any evidence.I am talking about the impulsive weird posture of the chief psychiatrist who mercilessly orchestrated the sacking of my brother against all odds with evidence of glaring atrocities in the office of GHS headquarters.I am talking about the ludicrous and ridiculous ideas of the chief psychiatrist who believe that the panacea to my brother's so-called 'possible delusional disorder' he diagnosed can best be managed by sacking him from work and terminating his salary.Even an elementary school boy know mental illnesses are triggered by subjecting people to stressful and painful experience.My brother's promotions and salary arrears were withheld for years by the Medical Director in conspiracy with elements at GHS headquarters.Akawsi Osei then compounded the stress by orchestrating his sacking ironically claiming he is suffering from 'possible delusional disorder'.This is the working style of the political chief psychiatrist of Ghana.I predicted some time ago when he was out making loud noise about clearing the streets of Accra of the mentally ill ,that Accra psychiatry hospital will rather collapse under his guidance and i am right.I am more than convinced this man is sick in the brain.Government should begin reforms in mental health by sacking him first.That is the only way mental health will improve.Any amount given to him will go down into the drain because you cannot have a lunatic managing fellow lunatics.That is recipe for disaster.
